Who is GOD?

I have struggled with this question for a long time now. In fact, I can't find a suitable definition for GOD. There isn't!!! The entire bible is GOD. Is that enough? The universe isn't enough to describe HIM. I can only say HE's GOD: GOD IS GOD.

GOD vs Moses' interraction. God said to Moses: Tell Pharoah I AM this and that. HE didnt' go into details. Going into details is similar to trying to teach a baby calculus.

"Creator of the Universe" as allenwylle said or "Architect of the cosmos that is the universe". We are unable to comprehend him, but we may know him.

My Bible starts with "In the beginning God..." If I can get past those four simple words, the rest is all down hill.

I am a pretty simple guy, and not all together very smart, if I could wrap my mind around God, He wouldn't be much.

I am thankful that I am never told I have to understand Him, just believe Him.

BTW: Paul kind of gave it a stab on Mars Hill, see Acts17:22-34 :cool

hey classik, this is my illustration of who god is, forgive me if i confuse you. god is spirit, the spirit of god is holy, that's why the holy spirit is from god and of god. when god draws you to salvation, he sends his spirit as a helper and comforter. now picture a house with windows, the house is god's house, what dwells inside god's house, his spirit that is holy, his spirit illuminates everything in the house and the windows light up with god's holiness. now picture jesus walking out of the house. who do you see? god of flesh! when you stare at a picture of jesus, you're starring at god. he manifested himself into flesh so he could teach us the word and die for our sins and sufffer because he loves us that much. read up on the scriptures of his resurrection and have faith.

the house i'm referring too is the kingdom of god in heaven, jesus walking out of his kingdom is himself god/spirit manifesting himself into god/flesh thus being born into mary's womb.

in the gospel of john film, do you remember what jesus said to the woman at the well?

Yeah. Thanks a lot. :):nod

god the father is god of spirit. this is the first thing to understand. god of spirit is the beginning of everything, he was/is the first to exist. god is a spirit, the spirit of god is holy. that's why the holy spirit is from god and of god. now picture a house with windows. the house is god's house. what dwells inside god's house, his spirit that is holy. his spirit illuminates everything in the house and the windows light up with god's holiness. now picture jesus walking out of the house. who do you see.

Sometimes do you ever wonder why God called you to do something for Him? There are many reasons why God shouldn't have called you, or me, or anyone else for that matter, but God doesn't wait until we are perfect to call us. Think of all those God used. You're in good company if you think you aren't ready for God to use.
  • Abraham lied. Sarah laughed at God's promises.
  • Moses stuttered. David's armor didn't fit.
  • John Mark was rejected by Paul.
  • Timothy had ulcers.
  • Hosea's wife was a prostitute.
  • Amos' only training was in the school of fig-tree pruning.
  • Jacob was a liar.
  • David had an affair.
  • Solomon was too rich.
  • Jesus was too poor.
  • Abraham was to old.
  • David was too young.
  • Peter was afraid of death.
  • Lazarus was dead.
  • John was self-righteous.

  • Paul was a murderer.
  • So was Moses.

  • Miriam was a gossip.
  • Gideon and Thomas both doubted.
  • Jeremiah was depressed and suicidal.
  • Elijah was burned out.
  • John the Baptist was a loudmouth.
  • Martha was a worry-wort.
  • Mary may have been lazy.
  • Samson had long hair.
  • Noah got drunk.
  • Did I mention Moses had a short fuse?
  • So did Peter, Paul and lots of folks.
But God doesn't hire and fire like most bosses because He's more like our Dad than a boss. He doesn't look at financial gain or loss. He's not prejudiced or partial, nor sassy and brassy, nor deaf to our cry. He's not blind to our faults. His gifts to us are free. We could do wonderful things for others and still not be wonderful ourselves. Satan says, "You're not worthy!" Jesus says, "So what? I AM." Satan looks back and sees our mistakes. God looks back and sees the Cross.

Then wouldn't it be more accurate to say "I" wouldn't be much? The way it is written it seems to imply the opposite. :shocked!

:confused I have written that same statement several times over the years, it was even in my signature on a Christian guitar forum at one time. You are the only one to ever misunderstand it...

Don't worry, your meaning was perfectly clear right from the start. Edward simply misread it.

Excellent question my friend Classik, I used to stay awake in pondering on who God is, until it occurred to me that 'we' (man) were created in Gods 'image', so shouldn't we start there to answer our question as to 'who God IS'?

Here is my humble explanation of God, ...

As you said, the Bible does start out with God as a Creator who creates the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

... 26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

This is obviously OUR beginning, and NOT His, ... right? Besides the Bible makes it perfectly clear that God has no beginning nor end.

So God is the Creator of all things created, so God is NOT the part of creation, and someone who is NOT the part of creation, then as Tillich explained, God is the 'source of being' (see Wikipedia on Tillich). So God IS, or as He explained to Moses:

Exodus 3:14
And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Then we jump to John 1:1-14 and read;

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
... 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
... 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Above lies the answer to who we are (man),
who the Son is (the Word)
and who God is (I Am Who I Am).

Now that was simple wasn't it?

God IS "I Am Who I Am"
The Son was created, actually 'begotten' of God, He is the first of ALL Gods creations and because of Gods will is the perfect 'image' and character of God His Father.

Colossians 1:15
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

John 1:2-3 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

This is why we shouldn't make the Son of God Jesus and say he is God.

Romans 1:23
and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

Then one day (Gods day, ... or when He calls it a day), God said to His Son; "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, ..."

So they created Adam who represents God
Then Eve who was taken out of Adam, represents the Son who was begotten of God.

So 'who is God', ... how could we describe God Himself? Again we turn to His 'image' man. Now imagine if we were the only existence as God IS, and there would not be anything or anyone besides us! EVERYTHING that exists would be contained within us, and if anything we make, it would have to remain IN us. We would not have arms as we do in this created human form, ... so how can we imagine God in this physical image, man?

The answer resides in our MIND. It is the only part of man that is pure God, it is that tiny 'Spirit', ... that was breathed into us by God, and remains Gods property. When we die, or this physical body ceases to exist, the 'Spirit' that God breathed into us returns to Him from whence it came.

Now ask yourself; "What is the limits to our mind'? How big of a rock could we imagine in our mind? Can you imagine a rock big as the earth, or even as big as the entire universe? What would 'limit' our mind from making this rock get bigger and bigger? Nothing. I could imagine a rock a thousand times the size of this universe, and it would still remain IN my mind.

This IS God, only He can create the rock, but us 'created' can only imagine (create) what God already created, in this case the 'rock'. We can alter that rock, take things like gold, silver or iron out of it, but we are always dependent on our Creator God. We can create from the things He already created, .... and the possibilities are endless.

No one has, nor can ever see God, just as we cannot 'see' our mind. The brains activity that we see with MRI's or other sensors is NOT our mind, our spirit, but is the synapsis that react in the brain that causes it to visualize images, and activates our body muscles to take the rock apart and make things out of it.

So in a way it is just as you said; 'God is God', only we are to get to know Him a little more than that, for we are 'children of the Most High God' and if we have the desire to live and create things with Him and His beloved Son Jesus, the joy set before us is infinite, to be enjoyed throughout eternity. Whatever we can imagine, God can make possible. If we don't have the material for it (atoms or whatever we can come up with besides atoms) God is happy to oblige in creating it.

I can't wait... only for now this aching body limits me, hinders even my faith. But when I drop this body and get into that eternal spiritual body, ... wow, joy in creating, eating and drinking Gods wisdom without an end awaits me and everyone who yearns for such a thing!!!

In Jesus name

Odon the worm.
