Bible Study Whole Armor of God

K

King James

A famous quote. The whole armor of God. Where does this come from? A similar reference in Isaiah? Hmm...not exactly. The whole armor is from a devil's book, The Wisdom of Solomon. How could this be? When I was looking up information about the Apocrypha, this is the common response:http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/why-arent-the-books-of-the-apocrypha-in-all-bibles/

Quote from website link about reasons apocrypha is no good:

2. Neither Jesus Christ, nor any of the New Testament writers, ever quoted from the Apocrypha. (Jude mentioned Enoch, but Enoch was not the author of the books that bear his name.

More information on the topic via link below followed by the three books in question: http://scriptural-truth.com/PDF_Apocrypha/Whole armor of God.pdf

Paul's description of the armor of God in Ephesians 6 is likely influenced by
Isaiah 59:17 which is very similar. Additionally, Paul may have been including
content from the apocryphal book, Wisdom of Solomon: "The Lord will take
his zeal as his WHOLE ARMOR, and will arm all creation to repel his enemies;
he will put on righteousness as a breastplate, and wear a helmet of righteous
justice; he will take holiness as an invincible shield, and sharpen stern wrath
for a sword" (Wisdom of Solomon 5.17-20)
Bobby Valentine notes: "One of the most interesting parallels between Paul
and Wisdom is with the word "panoplia" (whole armor). This word ONLY
occurs twice in all biblical Greek. Guess where? You got it: in Ephesians 6 and
Wisdom 5.17. (I say biblical Greek because Wisdom is part of the LXX which is
in fact "biblical" Greek). ... Both Wisdom and Ephesians are clearly reflecting
back Isaiah 59. But interestingly Paul includes two things that Isaiah 59 did
not: 1) the shield and 2) the sword. Significantly enough Wisdom includes
both of these."

Ephesians 6:11

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

11 Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Wisdom of Solomon 5:17–20

17 The Lordd will take his zeal as his whole armor,
and will arm all creation to repele his enemies;
18 he will put on righteousness as a breastplate,
and wear impartial justice as a helmet;
19 he will take holiness as an invincible shield,
20 and sharpen stern wrath for a sword,
and creation will join with him to fight against his frenzied foes.

Isaiah 59:17

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate,
and a helmet of salvation on his head;
he put on garments of vengeance for clothing,
and wrapped himself in fury as in a mantle.

The armour of God in Ephesians..:)

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

Not a lot interest is being shown in this thread I see. I believe this is because it is because people do not know a lot about the armor of God and what this entails, to "put on' the whole armor of God. I got the same kind of response on a different board about the armor of God that you did here. This is a shame because I believe it is very important to us as Christians.

Most people, if you ask, will tell you that there is 6 pieces to the armor of God, but that is not so, there is 7. The 7th is prayer. In prayer, we have direct access to the throne room of God.

When you put on the whole armor God, you do not dress yourself, you are clothed; and there are not six pieces to the armor of God, there is only one piece, and that is Christ. We all toil and try dress ourselves. We study and seek to understand so we may gird our loins with truth, but in the end it is only our truth. We seek to please the Lord as best we might so we are armed with our righteousness, but in the end it is only our righteousness, and not his. We shod our feet with the gospel of peace, but find out in the end we wore boots of destruction. And oh how we do hold on firmly to our shield of faith, it is hour hope. But in the end we find that our faith was founded in our own beliefs, for we do oft trust our own understanding. We find that every garment that we have clothed ourselves in is moth eaten and soiled. But when Christ is come, He will cast off your filthy rags, and He will cloth you with a new garment. Not a garment of many pieces, but a garment of one piece, and that piece is Christ.

I don't understand the point of the post. Are you saying that the whole armor of God is devilish? It clearly is not because it is stated in Ephesians 6. What are you trying to accomplish with your post?

King James,
I think Paul quotes truth wherever he finds it...
Titus 1:12 is another such example and there are many from Paul.

Sift and sort. Keep the truth and toss the rest.

Mr. Bolts is the only one that understands what the thread is talking about.

Yes and Scripture is our cannon aka measurement for truth. We claim truth wherever we find it but only through the guidance and lenses of the bible. In other words, we don't change the meaning of scripture based on non canonical material.

I agree with that. The Word has more power than most realize and supercedes all writings of any other book on the planet. Is no one going to speak on the whole armor of God? It is a good subject to be studied and important I believe. Not too confusing either, seems to be pretty plain.
