Why did Joseph cry over Benjaman

Genesis 43:29-31 says

As he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, he said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?†And he said, “May God be gracious to you, my son.†Joseph hurried out for he was deeply stirred over his brother, and he sought a place to weep; and he entered his chamber and wept there. Then he washed his face and came out; and he controlled himself and said, “Serve the meal.â€

Why did Joseph cry secretly over Benjamin? I heard one explanation that as God disciplines us, although He doesn't go away and weep, God is the same tenderhearted in that His heart aches for us as He works on us.

Any other ideas why Joseph secretly went in his chambers to cry?

I don't think there is anything hidden in the message here. Benjamin was the youngest brother. He was his full brother by blood. He's never meet him before.

This is not the first account of Joseph crying in regard to seeing his brothers. Keep in mind that Joseph had yet to reveal himself at this point in the story. He did not weep in front of them at this time.

I agree thethinkingrebel and Danus.

SeekingHim,

If you are truly seeking Him, you will find Him in the small still voice. God is calling us back to who we were created to be. We love others, and we cry over those we have missed. Such is the case with Joseph.

The Bible is living and active and breathing because it's a story about people and the situations some of them had to endure. We have to read those stories in the raw emotions that they portray at times or we miss the core message. Joseph loved his brother, and that's why he cried. There is no hidden meaning behind this... and if you have ever lost somebody close to you and were ever reunited, then this will resonate deep with you. If you've never lost somebody you loved and later found them, then put yourself in the shoes of Joseph and experience the emotion he felt when he saw his brother whom he loved. Share the experience with Joseph, and when you find somebody close to you that is going through something similar, you'll know how to share their experience with them from your heart instead of standing there like a bump on a log in a stupor trying to figure out which way's up.

When Abraham had to offer Isaac, it was more than an act. There were deep emotions surrounding that event... and just as Jesus died on the cross for us, it was because he loved us so much, and he showed us that great love.

Grace and peace.

lets not forgot that in that genesis account the faith of isaac to trust his father that he wouldnt die.its not like he offered resistance. if our dads were to do this i doubt we would just lay there and let him tie us up.

so there had to be something said and trust given.

In the volume of the book it is written of Me..

Another absolutely marvelous aspect to this is that it tells the end of a very important story..

Joseph is clearly a type of Christ.. he was loved by his father (Jacob) and yet hated by his own brethren.. they sold him to the Gentiles for 20 pieces of silver.. and deceived their father Jacob (Israel) into believing that he was dead by dipping his coat of many colors in blood..

Joseph then went from the pit to the prison to the throne.. second only to Pharaoh... in a far away land.. was given a Gentile bride.. foretold the coming years of abundance and then famine.. and then many years later during that famine.. his own brethren went to him unknowingly to find sustenance..

His brethren were led to repentance and then Joseph revealed himself to them.. and Jacob (Israel) learned late in his life that the son of his old age was not only alive.. but ruler over all..

In the end Israel shall be delivered.. not destroyed as so many sadly preach and teach today..

Thematically the ancient scriptures have told us the story again and again in countless, living and powerful ways.. for in the volume of the book it is written of Me.. saith the LORD..

for the record i lean toward a preterist view, but i am not going to say that god is done with the isrealites.

why would i think that.i embrace what i am by blood when i came to christ. god told me that i was one. its different to have it told to you by parents then have GOD say read the ot first as this is where your roots are. you need to know where you came from.

i just disagree with how modern dispy say that isreal must suffer again . the aod implies a drawing back to the lord then a falling away of sorts.

Joseph moved with very specific designs in the dealings with his brothers and his timing and disclosure of who he was, which was not yet finalized at the time you point to above.

His actions are interesting to study.
