Question: "Why does God test us?"

Answer:
When we ask why God tests us, or allows us to be tested, we are admitting that testing does indeed come from Him, as clearly taught in Scripture. Although we are forbidden to test Him (Deuteronomy 6:16; Matthew 4:7), when God tests His children, He does a valuable thing. David sought God’s testing, asking Him to examine his heart and mind and see that they were true to Him (Psalm 26:2; 139:23). In both the Old and New Testaments, the words translated “test” mean to prove by trial. Therefore, when God tests His children, the purpose is to prove that our faith is real. Not that God needs to prove it to Himself since He knows all things; rather, He is proving to us that our faith is real, that we are truly His children, and that no trial or test will overcome that faith.

In His Parable of the Sower, Jesus identifies the ones who fall away as those who receive the seed of God’s Word with joy, but as soon as a time of testing comes along, they fall away. James clearly explains that the testing of our faith develops perseverance, which leads to maturity in our walk with God. Perseverance in times of trial and testing will result in our spiritual maturity, our completeness (James 1:3-4). James goes on to say that testing is a blessing, because when the testing is over and we have “stood the test,” we will “receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12). Testing and trying come from our heavenly Father who works all things together for good for those who love Him and who are called to be the children of God (Romans 8:28).

The testing or trials we undergo come in various ways. Becoming a Christian will often require us to move out of our comfort zones and into areas we have never encountered before. We’ve perhaps heard the saying ‘No pain – no gain’ when exercising our physical bodies. The same applies to exercising our faith in God. This is why James wrote ‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds’ (James 1:2). Testing our faith can be in small things like daily irritations; they may also be severe afflictions (Isaiah 48:10). Whatever the source of the testing from God, it is to our benefit to undergo the trials.

The account of Job is a perfect example of God allowing one of His saints to be tested by the devil. Job bore all his trials patiently and “did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing” (Job 1:22). However, the account of Job’s testing is proof that Satan’s ability to tempt us is limited by God’s sovereign control. No demon can test or afflict us with beyond what God has ordained for His perfect purpose and our benefit.

There are many examples that can be used to illustrate the positive results from our being tested. The Psalmist likens our testing to that of being refined like silver (Psalm 66:10). Elsewhere in Scripture we can read of our trials as that of gold being refined in order to remove all its impurities (1 Peter 1:7). By the testing of our faith, God causes us to grow and mature into strong disciples who truly live by faith in Him, not by what we see (2 Corinthians 5:7).

When testing and trials come our way, we should receive them with joy, because we know that it is God who allows them to strengthen our faith. When we are knocked about in the storms of life, like the tree that digs its roots ever deeper for a greater grip, we must dig our roots deeper into God’s Word so we can withstand whatever comes against us.

Most comforting of all, we know that God will never allow us to be tested beyond what we are able to handle and in all things will provide a way out of the test (1 Corinthians 10:13). This does not mean He will remove the trial from us. Why would He when He says trials are for our benefit? Rather, the “way out” is the way through. the trial, with Him ever faithful by our side, until we come out on the other side of it by His grace and power, stronger and more mature Christians.

I don't mind if they want to debate. But if they want to get too confrontational that is a different story.

OK good. So what is your position on the article that you have posted in your OP?

I have felt God testing me many times in my life.I have heard many say that "No,God does not test us".But I feel that He does. That is why I do not believe everything that someone tells me.Trials do come our way.I guess it is how we deal with those trials and tribulations.

So I decide to try to move through your OP article without jumping around too much, I'll get lost.
In the first paragraph I do not agree that David is asking God to "test" him. This is what they say,
David sought God’s testing, asking Him to examine his heart and mind and see that they were true to Him (Psalm 26:2; 139:23). In Psalm 139 I'm looking at the context that verse is in, here it is.

Psa 139:21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
Psa 139:22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
Psa 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
Psa 139:24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

So David is telling God that he hates the ones who hate God. And he's asking God to examine his heart and see if that is true. The word "try" in verse 23, in the Hebrew means.....from Strong's
H974 = bachan
to examine, try, prove
to examine, scrutinize
to test, prove, try (of gold, persons, the heart, man of God)

God does not have to give us a trial to know what's in your hearts. If He did give us a trial/test if would be for us to learn about ourselves. He already knows.

The article is saying that God tests us, I do not think this scripture defends that position.

Nice Deborah !

I'd like to look at the next passage.

In the parable of the sower the testing which comes is from the world because of the presentation of the Word. God allows this but doesn't cause it imo.

Mat 13:20-21 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; (21) Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

It's correct that testing of faith develops perseverance and maturity as written in James but also note that God doesn't test us with evil.

Jas 1:13-14 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: (14) But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

I think sometimes we confuse God's discipline with the temptations from the world and the flesh.

I agree with your premise. Nice post. :)

I'm done for the night. Maybe Kathi will add her thoughts to what we have posted.

Ok I'll look at the remaining passages.

Again I see a confusion with God's discipline and testing. Israel was refined in captivity and exile as discipline for their lack of faith and obedience imo.

This I agree with. It was satan doing the testing with God's permission.

Psalm 66:10 does indicate God tested Israel with adversity. 1 Peter has great lessons which encourage believers to stand strong in the face of persecution and trials in the same manner Jesus did. These trials came from the world, the flesh, and satan though.

Yes amen !

Yes I agree.

Overall I think the article indicates that God brings many evil things upon us as tests and I disagree. The scriptures used mostly suggest the tests and trials come from the world, our flesh, or satan but God did deliver the Israelite into captivity for refinement. I see that more as discipline though.

Job was tested because of fear. The scriptures teaches us not to fear - worry about your life - be anxious for nothing - do not doubt the word of God.

God knew Job had fear in his heart and Job confessed his fear to lower the hedge of protection around him. The scripture says, " For the thing which I greatly feared has come upon me, and that which I was afraid of has come unto me." - Job 3:25 NKJV

There are three great statements in book of Job; Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand how I have erred. - Job 6:24 NKJV;

Teach me what I have failed to see; and if I have done wrong, I will do it no more’? Job 34:32 CJB; Amplified version - Teach me what I do not see [in regard to how I have sinned]; if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more?

'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' "Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know." Job 42:3 NASB

All faith will be tested! For my wife and I, God called our only child back to heaven on 2/26/2012. It is doing these trials and tribulations we mature and seek God. He wants to show great and mighty things we know not. God always end all is well. If all is not well it simply means it is not the end.

Why?

New International Version
These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:7

New Living Translation
These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold--though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. 1 Peter 1:7

Romans 5
Living Bible (TLB)

3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. 4 And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady. 5 Then, when that happens, we are able to hold our heads high no matter what happens and know that all is well, for we know how dearly God loves us, and we feel this warm love everywhere within us because God has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

Romans 5
New King James Version (NKJV)

3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

1 Peter 4:12-19
New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Share the Sufferings of Christ
12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; 13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. 14 If you are reviled [a]for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a [b]troublesome meddler; 16 but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin [c]with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, [d]what will become of the godless man and the sinner? 19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

Mark 10:29-31
The Message (MSG)

29-31 Jesus said, “Mark my words, no one who sacrifices house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, land—whatever—because of me and the Message will lose out. They’ll get it all back, but multiplied many times in homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land—but also in troubles. And then the bonus of eternal life! This is once again the Great Reversal: Many who are first will end up last, and the last first.”

I am so sorry you do not have your child with you today. I praise God for your continued faith in the Lord and that your child was saved, you will see them again. We know this because of what David said about his baby son.

'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' "Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know." Job 42:3 NASB

What was it that Job did not know? I don't see anywhere that God condemns Job for being fearful but He does condemn him for something else, which caused Job's fear.

I believe God test us in order to try our hearts just as Jesus was tempted of Satan in Matthew chapter 4. Gods testing shows whether we are true overcomers through the trials and tribulations we face daily.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Jeremiah 17:10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Job 7:17 What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him?
Job 7:18 And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him every moment?

1Th 2:4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.

Rev 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

Psa 66:10 For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.

In this verse the word tried is not talking about being tested. It's not saying the silver is tested but that silver is refined.
What happens in the refining process? The silver is separated from the other elements that are not silver.
So I see that the example that David uses in this Psalm is of God when He parted the water and made dry land for them to escape the Egyptians, they walked across the land in obedience and by doing that they were separated from their adversary, they were rescued by God. Surely this built up their faith in obeying God and that would keep His promises.

So if I were to transliterate this scripture I would say,
For thou, O God, hast examined us: thou hast refined us, as silver is refined. (sanctification)

I believe God test us in order to try our hearts just as Jesus was tempted of Satan in Matthew chapter 4. Gods testing shows whether we are true overcomers through the trials and tribulations we face daily.

I do not believe God tests us like Satan tempted Jesus to prove anything.

I believe that the trials and tribulation we face is to refine us as silver and gold are refined, to take out the impurities. (sanctification process)

Jas 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
Jas 1:3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
Jas 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Once again, my interpretation of these verses is that our faith is being refined, not tested, the impurities removed (sancification) in order that we be made holy as He is holy.

Maybe my definition of a test is different than some others is but in reading your statement I don't think so.
A test is to find out what you already know and to see if it is ready for some purpose.
I do agree that God examines (proves) our hearts but then refines what He sees. Sometimes thru trials and tribulations.

Maybe it's a matter of semantics but when I look at the definitions of those words in the English language I see a big difference.

Thank you Deborah for you warm heart felt words. Our Father in heaven, I ask in the name of Jesus that you bless Deborah for life with exceedingly abundantly above favor with all that she ask or think. Bless her with sweet sleep and anoint her with a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. In Jesus name Amen!

1.What was it that Job did not know?

a. The scripture says, " My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts," says the LORD. "And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine." - Isaiah 55:8 NLT

b. God questioned Job in the following chapters - Job 38, Job 39, Job 40, Job 41, and Job 42. After God questioned Job, Job realized things are too wonderful for his understanding.

c. Proverbs 3:5 says, " Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding."

2. I don't see anywhere that God condemns Job for being fearful but He does condemn him for something else, which caused Job's fear.

a. This is revelation knowledge I posted from the Holy spirit. However God, Jesus and Paul has warned us not to fear, doubt, or worry throughout the bible. Fear - Doubt - Worrying = unbelief, a hardened heart, little faith, wavering faith, and no faith.

b. God was angry with Job friends for thinking that God had condemn Job.

c. Notice when Job prayed for his friends who had accused him of sin...Job received double for his trouble! Pray for your enemies!

I agree with everything you have said in this post.
I think Job's lack of understanding was that he was leaning on his own understanding which was that he was saving himself by all the deeds he did. Such as sacrifices for his children, etc. So that would cause him to fear, what if I'm not doing enough, type thinking. God told him that his own right hand could not save him. Then he understood that only God could save him. Someone else said in another discussion that he didn't have a personal relationship with God until then. I agree with that.
We lean not on our own understanding and just lean on our Lord and we have no need to fear.
God uses the trials and tribulations of this world to refine us as pure gold.

Thank you so much for that most lovely prayer. You are a blessing, a gift to us here on this forum.
God Bless you and keep you.

I believe Job did have a personal relationship with God. Job 1:1 says, " There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Job 1:8

Fear of God means obedience.

Psalm 37:23
New Living Translation (NLT)
The Lord directs the steps of the godly.
He delights in every detail of their lives.

Proverbs 20:24
Living Bible (TLB)
Since the Lord is directing our steps, why try to understand everything that happens along the way?

Proverbs 24:16
New Living Translation (NLT)
The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.
But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.

Yes, he did all the things he was suppose to do. He was upright and feared God.

H974 = bachan
to examine, try, prove

God does not have to give us a trial to know what's in your hearts. If He did give us a trial/test if would be for us to learn about ourselves. He already knows.

The article is saying that God tests us, I do not think this scripture defends that position.
