Bible Study Why is God going to give us a white stone with a new name?

Revelation 2:17He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.”’

A very interesting passage, Ms Kathi. The manna reference is significant: the Lord feeding His pilgrim people in the wilderness. Hebrews 9 says the Lord Who 'by the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God' shall 'purge your conscience from dead works'. He works through individuals' consciences as He sustains us through our pligrim, wilderness journeys.

(Two cents.)

Thanks I will post my research on it after some people reply.I think it is interesting.Heaven will be beyond our wildest dreams. :)

Dear sister, I can give you an excerpt of a study given by Gene Hawkins I transcribed from CD’s that will hopefully throw a little light on your question. I will add that all of the church do not receive the same rewards. For instance we see only two of the seven church assemblies; Philadelphia and Smyrna given crowns.

Revelation 2:17. "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it." When we get into the parables we're going to find out that Jesus basically said exactly the same thing. The reason He spoke in parables is to find out really who hath an ear to hear the mystery. Well this seventeenth verse is the key to any overcoming, and this is the key to any growth. These of Pergamos receive a certain reward, and why? Notice; "Will I give to eat of the hidden manna." Manna was the baby food that Israel ate in the wilderness, and these saints here at Pergamos are still in the babyhood state. They have never grown out of it and never will so they're not going to have the old corn of the land that God intends.

Then we read where Jesus says I "Will give him a white stone." The white speaks of purity of the holiness "And in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it." The name is actually "New Creation" and the only person that can know it is the one that becomes a new creation. You can't know what the new birth is until you have experienced it, and so the one that has been given this stone is the one is the one that knows that he has it. We read there in Romans 8:16 that "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God." We and God are the only ones that really know that. Some people may think they know whether someone is saved or not, and I've heard people say oh Lord; there's no way he's saved. Well, I don't think you can say that because we can't look on their hearts; it's the secret of this one knowing with the new name written which no man knoweth saving he that received it. He's the only one that knows that he has had this new creation experience with the Lord.

'The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him; He will show them His covenant' Psalm 25.4

Blessings.

The white stone was an ancient custom given to the person acquitted of guilt.
A black stone represented condemnation.
The new name written on it is the name of adoption.
We are adopted into the family of God.
The hidden manna is communion with Christ, which is hidden from the rest of the world.

Their have been several interpretations of the meaning of this.Their have already been a couple of them given as above. My two favorites are:
1.One meaning of the white stone probably has to so with the ancient Roman custom of awarding a white stone to the victors of athletic games. The winner of a contest was awarded a white stone with his name on it.This served as his "ticket" to a special awards banquet.According to this view,Jesus promises the over comers entrance to the eternal victory celebration in heaven. The "new name" most likely refers to the Holy Spirits work of conforming believers to the holiness of Christ Romans 8:29;Colosians 3:10.
2.Another widely held explanation suggests that the white stone may be a translucent precious stone such as a diamond. The word translated "white" in Revelation 2:17 is leukos and can also mean "brilliant, bright".This interpretation holds that on the stone is written the name of Christ, not the name of the believer.Revelation mentions that the name of Christ is written on the foreheads of the Saints Revelation 3:12;Revelation 14:1 and Revelation 14:20.

Ms Kathi:

So a bit like Paul's analogy with althletes, and running the race, then?

Interesting observations...

Blessings.

Yes,their seems to be several interpretations of this passage. The last one I gave is my favorite :)

Ms Kathi:

I think a point can be made that the language of Scripture is so rich that multiple references can be found, in terms of referring back to Old Testament and Jewish concepts; this is not to say that they are contradictory if multiple.

Blessings.

Yes,you can have 10 people in a room and give them one passage of scripture.I am sure you could get 10 different interpretations.

Ms Kathi: The validity of the 10 interpretations would of course vary according to how Biblically based they were... :)

Blessings.

hidden manna = Gods Spiritual word as Gods word is literal and also Spiritual as His Holy Spirit reveals truth to us

white stone = Spirits witness................... represents the Holy Spirit dwelling in us as this is how God recognizes His own by what spirit is living in them

new name = Gods purity within us by the renewing of His Spirit
