1) I would like a discussion a to WHY Jesus was baptized in water.

2) What was the significance of the dove?

It seems like many times threads become discussions about baptism in water. What it does, etc. So I'm sure this thread will go the way of looking at us again. But first I like to consider why Jesus was baptized.

To fulfill all righteousness.

And to receive the baptism of the Spirit to then begin his ministry. The same reason (that is, for ministry) that we receive a baptism of the Spirit (if we do). The gifts operate in power when a person is immersed in and controlled by a supernatural outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

2) What was the significance of the dove?
A dove seems to represent all the qualities of the Spirit...calmness, peace, contentment, etc.

The record does not say Jesus was baptized with the Holy Spirit. We are told, however, that Jesus is the administrater of Holy Spirit baptism, Matt.1:11.

Thank you for your response to the discussion. I agree with you for the most part.
However, I think the answer is found in the OT. "To fulfill all righteousness." He was a Jew and He kept the laws of the Jews.

Because He said "thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness". Ps.119:172 teaches: "all thy commandmentrs are righteousness." John had by inspiration preached baptism, Mk.1:4.

Union. Romans 6 describes union with Christ Jesus as the point of our baptism; it's likely the point of Jesus' baptism as well. That's because baptism signs-off on a covenant.

Jesus signed too. His sign is baptism. Our sign is baptism as well, because we're in union with Him in this covenant.

Most of the largely Hebrew writers thought on a covenant model, as did Jesus Himself. But this is probably the toughest thing to reach back through the ages, to understand. We have to tear back our utilitarianism, our scientism, our heritage, our background, and even to an extent our Gentile-oriented approach to Jesus and Paul. I don't propose anyone would immediately adopt such a view. But it does fit the history of Christianity, and it''s heavily developed by historical theologians as conservative as OP Robertson and among even more progressive theologians as Dunn and Wright.

The Jordan is the lowest place on the earth, it a place of humility. dying to self and living for others is a large part of baptism. I cant remember off the top but the Word "jordan" means "low place" or to that effect?

Correction: My post should read Matt.3:11, not 1:11. I'm not known for my typing skills.

LOL me either.

I wish one of you would find the same thing I did. But then I really like finding the types and shadows in the old testament.
There are literally hundreds of them that relate to Jesus, the Passover feast.
God hasn't changed. Jesus, the same yesterday, today, and forever.

I don't think what He did in being water baptised was symbolic, it was nescessary as a Jew. If I'm right it has more significants for us than I ever thought.

Another case of reading it a dozen times and not seeing for me. Matthew 3;15
But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.â€

I believe the dove was the spirit of God decinding on Jesus.

Didn't know that, interesting.

I know what you mean about not always seeing but even when I did I still don't know what He meant by that.

I can only speculate.

I'm waiting for our water baptism experts to reply. They will probably have some valuable input from scripture.

Whether the Jordan is the lowest or highest spot on earth, WHAT does that have to do with why Jesus was baptized?

Believers today follow the Lord in baptism. For the Lord Jesus Himself, the symbolic baptism preceded His own death, burial and resurrection, which is what baptism symbolizes.

I was brought up in the baptist church. about 4 years ago i started going to a nondenominational church. But I know in the baptist church water baptism is a symbol of death, burial and the resurection of Christ.

...because it's in the Scriptures, right?

Blessings.

All though the commandment was not from the law of Moses but an amendment to it, it was a commandment of God introduced by John the Baptizer, therefore Jesus had to obey the command or he would not be righteous (the seriousness of non compliance of this command can be found in Luke 7:30), this is also a lesson that ALL commands must be done to "fulfill righteousness", this is affirmed by the fact that the moment Jesus came out of the water was the first time recorded of God's public announcement "this is My Son" and by fulfilling all commands "of whom I am well pleased".

But too, this baptism of John (The forerunner of Christ) was not the same baptism of Christ, it was an amendment to the law of Moses and waxed old by Christs law but still under Christ's law baptism fulfills righteousness (it wasn't called forerunner for nothing), just like when Jesus was baptized and the spirit of the Lord descended upon him like a dove, we to receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

Yes, I was in the baptist church too when I first got saved.

I just thought do we really know why Jesus was baptisted. It seems that everything He did at the Cross, the Passover, the things He said to the Pharisees that we don't always understand, because He was a Jew fulfulling a covenant and beginning a new one, it seems the His baptism would have signifigance more than we think or understand not being Jewish.

Where's Jason he's Jewish.

Mat 3:17

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

we see that our friend "rrowell" left out an important word?
"beloved"

Lets see who else left that word out?

Mat 4:3

And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

Funny how they both seemed to miss this most important word?:chin
