When does technology go too far?

http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2014...will-use-app-to-show-license/?intcmp=features
Need to show your driver's license? In Iowa, there will soon be an app for that.

A smartphone app that's under development will allow users to show the digital license to law enforcement officers during traffic stops and at security checkpoints at Iowa airports, according to Paul Trombino, director of the state Department of Transportation. The free app will be available sometime in 2015.

"We are really moving forward on this," he said to Gov. Terry Branstad during a state agency budget hearing Monday. "The way things are going, we may be the first in the nation."

Trombino said users will use a pin number for verification, The Des Moines Register reported.

"Having this really allows people to protect their identity," he said, and suggested that the technology could be used for other state licenses.

Residents will still be able to use a regular, plastic driver's license. But for those who use the digital version, Trombino said it "is basically your license on your phone."

Iowa is one of more than 30 states that allow drivers to show their proof of insurance via an electronic device. Trombino said a mobile driver's license is logical because of people's reliance on the technology.

and get stolen, lose that phone and now they have your identity and can modify it. no thanks. im sure the app must have some security for that but with the tsa and such like, not for me.

Well, you don't need to carry your Lic with you anyway unless your a CDL holder. Some states have the medical card information like MO on the LIC itself.

I would like to see proof of insurance on a phone though in my state. Got a ticket because I left the papers at home.

That is the first thing that an officer asks for when being pulled over "May I see your drivers license please".

I like it.
so how it not be hacked? you loose that phone and someone finds it and then takes a photo of it then makes it. modifies it to his facial appearance has your ss and address. he may be caught but the damage will be done.

Jason they are doing that now from the computers in your house.

Yes it is, but there is no law stating you have to carry it. You have to carry proof of insurance. If you don't have it, you just give name and social. They can pull you up with your picture, no problem.

I sure would not want to tell the police officer that when being pulled over. No,giving a name and a social would not confirm that you have a valid drivers license.

many here that are old, don't have internet access and don't do use online banking. they also don't use the news online. I know and serve a lot of those.i do banking online, and the target and home depot hacks have it me.

the dl is easy to carry and its lighter then a phone. whats next, a dod app for soldiers? the cac card I have is digital. its called a smart card. why not have those at homes and use them that way?

I have done that its called the aphis and davids. there has been abuse , rampant of davids here. they can find you that way. that is WHY they take the license to the car! they input the dl number and it all pops up from your first license to the tickets and all in between.my record shows my learners permit from Washington state back in 93

You seem to have far much to experience in this matter. Kathi, I would slow down, and stop running lights.

A quick check of your social will tell the officer right away if you have a valid lic. Also the plates if the car belongs to you. You are required to give your social security number, name, and place of residence verbally. That is the only information by law your required to give.

If in a Car you also must provide proof of insurance.

If CDL holder you must provide proof of vehical inspection daily, State tax card for fuel purchasses, Medical card, and current Log updated from last line of duty status.

If I say black, you will say white. I am always right though it's black.

When You're Driving...

Driving without a license is a crime in all states and in Washington, D.C. This means you need to have your valid driver's license on hand if an officer stops you while driving. Failing to show proof of a valid license is a lesser offense than not having a license at all, but it can still be a crime.

no its not there is two types of classes for this. its driving without a license criminal intent and the other one driving with a suspended license . one will see jail the other may not. sometimes people forget to renew a license and the officer lets them go.

So is that a gamble that I would want to take?No thanks.

there is a new law I think here that says a cop may not ask for license in some stops. I will have to ask.
