Will the earth get old and be changed, or, will it be burned up with fire?

2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

Isa 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.

Psa 102:25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.
Psa 102:26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:

It might be neither. It might just get renewed, redeemed.

Interesting, Free, thanks. Can you expound a little further?

The Earth will always be here, but the world as we know it will pass away because Christ's kingdom is coming.

" And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." Rev 21:2

"And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God." Rev 21:3

In Christ's kingdom which is coming down from heaven, there will be no more pain, crying, killing, it will be all love.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." Rev 21:4

Rev 21
1 Then I saw a NEW heaven and a NEW earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared.

It seems pretty simple...the heavens and earth we currrently know will disappear. Where to is anyone's guess because we are not told this. John sees a new heaven and new earth. If we promise our children a new pair of shoes, how many kids would be disappointed to see the old pair fixed up. If scriptures say our earth and heaven will be new then it will be something that different than where we currently exisit imho.

The verses in the first post say two things.

1. The earth will get old and be changed
2. The earth will be burned up and there will be a new one

The question is merely, will the earth get old and be replaced or renewed, or will it be destroyed by fire and replaced or renewed? Being worn out by age and being destroyed by fire are two very different things.

I have never seen any scriptures to support an assumption that we get a new earth because the present one gets old. And per Rev 21:1 the present earth is not renewed...it disappears and a new one appears. There may be scriptures that support a firey end which seems more likely.

The "elements" melt and the elements are the rudiments....

  • Colossians 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances.

Someone told me once that "elements" meant all wicked things but I can't find that written. To me it appears to be all fleshly, carnal things melt. I do think that "the works therein" are the wicked things in the world. As far as "the earth also," I believe it means humanity, flesh, for flesh is created from the earth.

:-) I don't know. :shrug

i think that because it gets old is why God destroys is by fire and changes it like a garment into a new one :)

Maybe it is a 100 billion years old after all. LOL. ;) :D

Mat 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. Psa 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
Ecc 1:4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
(Don't put much stock in Ecclesiastes though...the book of man).
Isa 13:13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.
Isa 13:14 And it shall be as the chased roe (A CHASED ROE ZIG-ZAGS EVERYWHERE), and as a sheep that no man taketh up
Isa 24:19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
Isa 24:20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage (LIKE A HUT THAT ONE WOULD MOVE); and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
Isa 2:19 And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

Isa 65:16 That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes.
Isa 65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
Isa 66:22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.
Luk 16:17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.
Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

Hard to find anything definitive. It says there is no more sea. I don't think there is enough to say it's not the original earth underneath...but enough to say the former earth is not remembered. On the other hand, maybe it's like Jesus hinted...It's easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one jot or tittle of the law to pass away. If the law passed away...it would not be old...it would be GONE.
2Pe 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: We know the world or earth did not perish from the flood.

kos'-mos
Probably from the base of G2865; orderly arrangement, that is, decoration; by implication the world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants, literally or figuratively [morally]): - adorning, world.

2Pe 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
The purpose for fire is the judgement of men...not to destroy the earth altogether...nevertheless...NEW heavens and NEW earth are also mentioned.

Still not definite.

Belief that the earth will burn up is actually unscriptural and is based on not interpreting metaphorical language as per clear Old Testament precedent.

As has been shown in other threads, Jewish culture of the day was one where such apocalyptic language was used in a highly metaphorical fashion when the matter at isuse was not the actual end of the world, but rather a significant change in the socio-political order.

Thus we have Isaiah using language about stars falling to the earth to prophecy a coming judgement against Babylon, a judgement that has already taken place.

Isaiah uses similar language to characterize coming judgment againts Edom, again judgement that has already taken place.

Imagine how absurd it would be for a Martian, reading human literature where falling in love is accompanied by images of the “earth trembling†to then that this was what literally happened. No. In certain literary traditions, such metaphorical imagery is used to invest much more “common-place†events with their significance.

We say that the “earth shook†when I first looked into her eyes, but we are not intending to be taken seriously.

Same with Biblical language about the end of the world. If there were not a clear record of Old Testament precedent here, then you could say I am “making this upâ€Â. But there is such a record – apocalyptic end of the world language is routinely used to denote “non end of the world†events.
Besides, we know from Paul in Romans 8 that God is not going to destroy the earth, He is going to redeem it, liberating it from its bondage to decay:

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

How can God liberate the created world from slavery if He blasts it to smithereens?

You are, of course, free to simply refuse to engage clear arguments that speak against your position. I suggest, though, that such a strategy is not a wise one if you intend to convince others of anything and are not simply "talking to yourself".

I believe the word "elements" was taken from the Greek text (evil rudiments)

II Peter 3:10 "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

Hebrews 12:29 "For our God is a consuming fire."

Im guessing alot of people have probably concluded that this phrase (evil rudiments) is reffering to all the things that make natural flesh man sin.......That would include evil spirits,,,fallen angels,,,exc....

Revelation 11:13 "And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven."

But since the fallen angels are killed during the same one hour period as the return,,,, im thinking it might be so...... :chin

I believe it will be just like the first earth age,,,,,God jacked it up it using water/ice,,,,,,,I think hes going to do the same thing but God is a consuming fire,,,and if God is down here he will consume the wicked.....Hebrews 12:29 "For our God is a consuming fire." He cant use water because of a little promise,, but He never said nothing about fire,,,,pretty tricky hey :onfire

But the earth wasnt destroyed in the first age,,, just hurt and then rejuvenated at Genesis 1:2....

Hi Brian,

You wrote...."I believe the word "elements" was taken from the Greek text (evil rudiments)." But, I can't find the "evil" part. If I could it would make more sense to me.

I was thinking about this post today and wondered about dimensions. I'm not scientific at all but if there are parallel dimensions/universes, then perhaps this one is destroyed when that certain time arrives. Could that be what is meant by....

  • And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. [Revelation 21:1]

I always saw that as a new heaven and earth age but maybe more is being said. As far as "no more sea," I believe that simply means...no more sea of humanity, flesh.

Actually, that's the very reason I don't argue with you. You haven't got clear arguments at all. All you do is symbolize everything to suit your fancy. I am sure of one thing when Peter said the earth would be consumed by fire...that's exactly what he meant. You on the other hand can't even read a scripture without coming up with some weird interpretation. That's why I don't even bother answering you. As I mentioned. I think preterists...are out to lunch. Next thing you will be telling me the resurrection is allegorical. Don't bother debating with me. I have no interest in arguing with someone that can't even take a simple scriptural statement at face value.

^^ Do you take Revelation at face value?
