All right! I installed the Windows 8 Pro upgrade last night for $40, and it was easy!
1) Yes, I installed it on top of the Windows 8 free Preview Edition, and it works fine. You do not need to install it on top of XP, Vista, or 7.
2) I easily installed a Start button on the classic desktop. Reports that MS would make that impossible are not true.
3) No gadgets! And it won't let you install them, nor will it let you install Yahoo Widgets. I quickly found a free program and I'm happily running gadgets.
4) "Defender," the free Windows anti-virus program, ran automatically, but it had not been upgraded in 165 days. I upgraded it easily, but there should have been some kind of warning.
5) As with the preview version, I turn off the password, and it keeps turning itself back on.
6) Internet Explorer 10 works great.
