Wondering

Fran I praise the Lord you and your family was untouched by such devastation and my heart and prayers are with all those who have lost everything including family members. We see so much going on around the world with earthquakes and weather patterns and I do believe this is Gods wake up call and praying many will return back to His mercy and grace.

I agree with you FHG.
Most times I feel like people are asleep and are not aware of what is going on or of the spiritual world.
I feel like people are so lost...

So many more earthquakes and flooding, etc. Seems like the earth is tired -
All we can do is pray.

Wondering,

I agree with and understand the emotional ties people have to cities and towns - and employment. Quake-proof schools that do not meet the standard sounds like some standard has gone astray. Or, is that it is impossible to build earthquake proof buildings of any sort?

I think we need to get into discussion of who sends the quakes. Are they human phenomena or do they have God's action involved? I'm convinced of the latter. Why does he send them to certain places when the rest of the country is left untouched? That's called his sovereignty.

We have similar issues after floods. Cities are built along river banks for commercial access and when the floods devastate these low-lying regions, the houses are rebuilt on the same spots.

The Washington Post has this article, Deadly earthquake rocks central Italy; dozens dead, hundreds missing. I think it asks more questions than it answers.

Oh for a change of human nature (for me as well)!:sad

Blessings,

The polemiche are beginning. While the death toll is rising because some injured persons succumb to their injuries, the race of find "who is at fault" has begun.

Someone will surely be indicted. Buildings not up to code; someone must be held responsible. This is how Italy is. Find fault AFTER, not fix the problem BEFORE.

I believe it's impossible to build earthquake-proof buildings. In Japan they've found a way by placing suspension coils under the bldg, but this does not seem feasible in every case here. Also, these houses are built of stone. Wouldn't it be better to build houses of wood? If they're going to topple anyway, wouldn't it cause less damage to persons? It won't even be considered.

The fallen bridge that was damaged and left Amatrice isolated has been replaced with a road that goes through the woods and into town.

Aquila is still not rebuilt from 2009...

Wondering,

It may be difficult to build totally earthquake-proof buildings, in regions where there is considerable seismic activity, much more can be done with better building codes.

We are getting reasonable mass media coverage of the devastation in your country. The tragedy is beyond understanding to me. May the Lord use these trials to cause people to think on the Lord God and their destiny at death. For believers, there is the challenge of 'Turning trash into treasure (James 1:2-4).'

Here are a couple of examples of possibilities of prevention in times like you are experiencing in Italy:

Concerning wooden frame buildings and earthquakes in Japan, see 'Wood-frame construction advantageous in areas prone to seismic activity'.

What about this one? 'Log house on earthquake test'.
