I've worked hard at times but never been a worka holic . 12 hour shifts I consider workaholism by the way. Some are forced to do it. Some are happy to be there.
Work can take our mind off our own sin. We might feel ill will towards others. We might be living a double life with addictions such as gaming or pornography or drugs and so on.
By working hard, and especially in human services, we can focus on others' needs. Or our boss's needs. We are pleasing someone else's agenda.
I think non Christians might use work as a way of compensating for their lack of meaning in life. A way of feeling good about themselves.
When work replaces God, we need to be aware of that. God first, boss second . Often there shouldn't be a conflict in that anyway. I'm talking here more about our overall attitude to work. Work won't save our eternal souls I don't think.
