True Christian strength dose not come from faith in self, but by His Spirit--through faith in the strength of Christ and His merits only. It is when the believer chooses to include self into this equation (faith in Christ only, equals strength) thus going beyond Scriptural authority which teaches us that there is nothing in self (old self) that can be used by the Spirit of God, even the new self waits on the Lord for "all that pertains to life and godliness."
It is our new self (new man or new nature) which we present or "yield unto God" (Rom 6:13), not the old. Even our new nature does not have input here, but rather receives output from the Spirit, who uses the life of Christ in the believer through the yielding, or presenting.
The believer is a person, with an old and new nature, and it is the person in the new nature God is working (Phl 2:13). Defeat is not possible for the believer concerning sin's guilt, but the unlearned saint will continue to be "heavy laden" when expecting conformity from the old nature or old self, which cannot even be subjected to God's will (Rom 8:7). To that which we trust most, it is there where we do yield.
