Growth Yield Yourself (New-Self)

True Christian strength dose not come from faith in self, but by His Spirit--through faith in the strength of Christ and His merits only. It is when the believer chooses to include self into this equation (faith in Christ only, equals strength) thus going beyond Scriptural authority which teaches us that there is nothing in self (old self) that can be used by the Spirit of God, even the new self waits on the Lord for "all that pertains to life and godliness."

It is our new self (new man or new nature) which we present or "yield unto God" (Rom 6:13), not the old. Even our new nature does not have input here, but rather receives output from the Spirit, who uses the life of Christ in the believer through the yielding, or presenting.

The believer is a person, with an old and new nature, and it is the person in the new nature God is working (Phl 2:13). Defeat is not possible for the believer concerning sin's guilt, but the unlearned saint will continue to be "heavy laden" when expecting conformity from the old nature or old self, which cannot even be subjected to God's will (Rom 8:7). To that which we trust most, it is there where we do yield.

We have to die to self daily in order to know and have the mind of Christ that directs our path. It's through Gods righteousness that works in us that makes us pleasing to the Father as our own self righteousness is as a filthy rag to God.

Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Romans 8:5 for they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Romans 8:6 for to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Romans 8:7 because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Romans 8:8 so then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
Colossians 3:6 for which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

Colossians 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
Colossians 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
Colossians 3:14 and above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Luke 5:36 and he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
Luke 5:37 and no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
Luke 5:38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

for_his_glory:

Yes, Romans 8 is such a stirring passage with deep doctrine and is the source of a great deal of encouragement to so many Christians. The contrast between sinful flesh and the Spirit is one of the keys to the passage. The Lord Jesus Himself, - while incarnate - is of course perfectly sinless.

Blessings.

Hi FHG - Thanks for the encouraging truths in your replies through the applicable scriptural usages.

I wanted to share that the only righteousness we are in is Christ's, as you've indicated, for there is no other righteousness than that of His, thus the righteousness the saint stands in, and is considered the believers's righteousness, is that which Christ is made to us.

The key understanding is that this must be imputed (made unto) because it cannot be imparted (requires being deity) and therefore, "Of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption" (1 Cor 1:30).

God's blessings to your Family!
