You shall be as gods..

I was reading a different thread the other day in which the poster brought up Buddhism and Hinduism in a that discussion, and it got me to thinking; and so I have a question. I know very little about the beliefs and practices of other religions, so I am hoping someone might have an answer to my question.

In the Christian Bible, we first find the story of the serpent tempting Adam and Eve with the fruit of knowledge, telling them that they shall be as gods knowing good and evil. Later in the story of the Bible, we find that If we are obedient before the Lord, then we shall be as the sons of God. The story of the Bible and the knowledge of the Law presents the temptation that by your knowledge and understanding of good and evil, you begin to think of yourselves as a god, judging right and wrong, desiring to be called a Son of God.

In any of the other main world religions, be it Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism or whatever, do any of those other religions offer the same promises of becoming a god, of becoming a Son of God?

This is interesting. I have pondered this before and hesitantly speak of it because I would not think it wise to say I am a God, at all. Nevertheless...it sort of implies that we will. We were created in the image of God, we will be able to do everything that Jesus does (in the here and now), move mountains & raise the dead, to have dominion over the entire earth and heavens... and other things which imply the notion that we (are??) will be higher beings than most others. Even higher than the Angels.

Not to say that I am God or we are God, but think about it. We were created in the very image of God, and are instructed to emulate God, take on the mind of Christ, be in Christ and Christ in us. One Spirit, one faith, one body, one God with many members.

To walk in the spirit, constantly. Jesus said He does nothing but what He sees the Father do. Jesus was in the Spirit at all times I believe. Having that connection may indeed give us the outlook of Abba Himself.

Think of a police force. They are one "the police". But have many members, Sargents, privates and so forth. Having full authority and yet at the same time, under the (head) chief, which directs us and guides us and protects us. Humbling ourselves to our God and leader with this train of thought...is encouraging and gives us vary much to look forward to. There's great responsibility coming our way in the future and perhaps even now. Remember, to much whom is given, much will be required. This is a scary thought!

The temptation that comes with our knowledge that abides not in Faith, is that we place ourselves above God, sitting in the temple of God, showing ourselves that we are God. This is the temptation and the principalities and the powers that we wrestle against. Yet our example in Jesus, is he never put himself above the Father, yet being found in the form of a man humbled himself.

Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

moving mountains is an idiom. im sure with all the traveling paul did, he would have cast some mountains into the sea. yet its not recorded.

It is indeed an idiom as far as I can tell. I've never heard of real rock mountains being cast into the sea. That's a pretty big one and would certainly make the news lol. So I figured that the meaning would correspond to our trials and tribulations. Like for instance, one man has an addiction to porn or cigarettes. Something he's having trouble overcoming. These mountains in peoples lives can be and have been (overcome) cast into the sea.
See what I mean brother? :)

it was told that as well. the concept of I said ye are gods is the idea that the Hebrew Pharisees are like God in that they discern evil from good and judge as such.

Amen brother. This is perhaps the scary part. Of course I (or most/all of us) could not or would not even fathom the thought of being higher than God. Myself, I couldn't even begin the thought of being equal with God due to my fear of God, and my ignorance of just how sensitive that God may be to such thoughts! It's easy to understand that I am nothing and can do nothing without God.

The scriptures do make great implication that our status will be a much higher one after we are transformed/transfigured though. Not something I like to dwell on because the heart is deceitful above all things! But the very phrasing of, being "in Christ" and Christ being "In us"...being led of the Spirit...wow, brother! That thought does make one feel good. I may only be the little toenail in the body, but wow, the toenail of God Himself! We're family, adopted, heirs. We have soo much authority already! In the name of Jesus Christ, evil spirits, demons and even satan himself must flee! That's huge.

Evil spirits are easier to deal with than people are! A Spirit filled Christian is the last thing that evil spirits want to encounter, lol.

Ahh, I see. I suppose this would be true if...(If), one is a mature Christian being led of the Spirit. Maybe the Pharisees let it go to their head back then and thought more highly of themselves than they ought? Almost certainly.

Luckily for us, that since Jesus came and gave Himself to the cross, no more do we need an intercessor or priest to approach God for us. We all have equal access to God now. Praise you Jesus!

:thumbsup

Oh, the scripture;

Hebrews 5:14
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil./

the statement of jesus is taken out of context, it is to response jesus was accused of blasphemy when they said you are going to be stoned for saying I am the son of GOD. jesus then quoted the law to them. the psalm that says that mentions nothing but about the judges of isreal and the torah as they sat in moses seat.(Sanhedrin)

Forgive me brother, I...sort of get what you're saying, but could you expound on it a little for clarification? :)

Whom said it?
Satan, I wouldn't believe anything he said.
The serpent said, he shall not surely die,.........eyes shall be opened and ye shall be as gods....lower case g.
He beguiled Eve to partake of the fruit, which led to death.

Oh ye of little faith...

Moving "that mountain" is not just an idiom or a figure of expression. The Mountain is a very real mountain, and it can only be moved by FAITH. But if you only knew which mountain is was that you should move, then maybe you would try and move it. There is only one mountain that stands in your way, and that mountain is Mt. Sinai. When you find the faith to move "that mountain" out of your way, then the Glory of Mt Zion shall appear before the horizon.

. that is an idiom. so I should pray to literaly move mt.horeb? praying to remove a mountain of trials. is what we are discussing

john 10:33-36

and psalms 82 read both in context.

Hi Jason
I take those scripts as saying we belong to Him,
We are God's children as PSA.82:6 states,
I have said, Ye are gods, and all of you are children of the most High.
As they say of my kids:
They are Diane's.

My beliefs any ways :)

Of course is an idiom, but one with significance, for it is a spiritual mountain that stands in our way, and Sinai/Horeb represents the commandment of the Law and the old covenant. We are all drawn to Christ and to His Heavenly Zion, but many struggle to get there, and many turn back because the way is too hard, but they climb a mountain that they need not climb nor were asked to climb, if only they had the faith to move it aside.

the context is given to the jews. jesus used that to the Pharisees in a statement of HIM claiming to be GOD. that doesn't negate your position as paul says we received power to become sons of GOD.
HOWEVER, we don't have the power to create, take life in judgement, as God alone does. the Pharisees had that via moses and the torah. the church has no power to execute for crimes. that is the governments job see Romans 13.
since peshac is nigh I could connect psalms 82 to exodus.

remember god said after exodus that isreal was his firstborn? connect that to the statement to psalm 82. in short.

It might be easier to do than you might think, so let me challenge with something.

In the gospels when Jesus stand up and condemns the Pharisees, woe unto you Pharisees, Hypocrites.......

When you read those passages in the scripture, how do you receive the word within yourself. Do you perceive yourself as Jesus uttering your condemnation to the Pharisees, or do you receive the Word of the Lord as the Pharisee being condemned?

Yes Jason
In John 10:34 Jesus said
Is it not written in your law,, I said, Ye are gods? Referring to PSA.82:6

Jason, I have tried to find the verse you speak of saying we received power to be sons of God.
Do you know where it is ?
That would help a lot.
Appreciate it..
