Your Dream Home

My dream house would probably be a condo, lol. I gotta clean it and I don't want to have to deal with a yard and such. So...a nice, quiet condo with decent neighbors. Nothing too fancy, I guess.
 
Maybe it's because I grew up with six brothers and sisters in a 12' x 65' trailer home but I personally like small homes with smaller rooms. to me it feels more cozy for lack of a better word. At 1,800 sq.ft., the home we have now is twice the size of that trailer home and we are less than half the family size and in my view it is a bit oversize.

:eek2 I'd suffocate in something that small. Kudos to you for being able to survive and thrive in that kind of a home, WIP .
 
I like rooms in a home.I do not like the open feeling that is so popular now.The older homes had rooms.

Funny thing is, we never felt crowded. Our home today is a 1,800 sq.ft. 1-1/2 story farm home. The three bedrooms are on the 2nd floor. One day I asked our daughters if they thought we were crowded and they said no. So I asked them if they thought it would be crowded if we sealed off the upper level and remodeled the lower level to make bedrooms. They quickly said yes. Then I asked how they'd feel if we did that plus they had five brothers and sisters to share the rooms. Their response was pretty much :eek2.

My two brothers and I shared a 9' x 16' bedroom that was built on to the back door of the trailer home. We had bunk beds, a closet, and a dresser plus the deep freezer was in our room. Three of my sisters shared one bedroom and one dresser. The other sister had a small bedroom to herself with a dresser. The girls' rooms were adjoining and they all shared the same closet between the two rooms. The house had a tip-out section in the living room and the total living space of the house was about 950 sq.ft.

We are definitely spoiled today. According to the US Census the average size new home in 1973 was about 1,600 sq.ft. In 2010 the average home grew to 2,400 sq.ft. That's 50% bigger or 1-1/2 times the size. But there's more. The average size of the United States household in 1973 was about 3.5 persons. In 2013 the average size decreased about 12% down to about 3.1 persons. What this means is in 1973 the average person in the US had about 457 sq.ft. of living space. In 2013 the average person had about 775 sq.ft. or 70% more space. For what????

I would be very comfortable in a home 1800 sq ft or even smaller.
 
And we are more than comfortable. I would be comfortable in one half this size and I was even with a family twice a large.

My daughter is an architect. She encourages clients to consider smaller homes. Even when people build McMansions of 4,000 feet or more (pretty common) they end up living in about 1800 square feet anyway, with a lot of the space almost never used.

Think about where we spend most of our time in our homes. We don't routinely use all our space.
 
I also do well in small spaces(Ive lived in a van before).Also I agree anything thats paid for and mine is awesomesauce.I can make anything home.

I found one home that is about 50 years old, that has large windows. I cant post any pic of it since I have none. its rather a surfer's paradise with all those boards and the repair/shop shed next to it.
 
I should have asked how old that home is.parts of it remind me of a local church and whom was the architect. you would have to see it to see why. this route has homes that are old, but none of the oldest homes are in that route.

since the oldest homes are usually wooden and or Spanish architect let see. royal palm blvd is on that topo I sent you. I use them to reference streets. but I haven't seen used this old hotel/ apartment bldg. once it had an anchor that predated the us in front of it and it looks worse then it does in the pic.:sadView attachment 4657

So cool! I got to visit the alamo when i was 10 in san antonio I hated when our group wanted to leave san antonio was so beautiful and interesting to me.
