Over the last few years, I've heard several theories of what the expression "the meat of the word" actually means. My own is that it is a reference to teachings on enduring sufferings for Christ's sake, and for the gospels. This interpretation is based on and supported by the following passages of scripture. All are free to respond with their thoughts.

The expression "the meat of the word" relates specifically to those parts of Christian teaching that are the "toughest" to swallow, more specifically to the teachings in scripture about enduring afflictions, trials, sufferings and persecution for Christ's sake, that we might be counted worthy to reign together with Him in eternity (2 Timothy 2:10-12).

While "the meat and the milk" of the word are mentioned in Hebrews 5, the context in surrounding Chapters is what lays this teaching bare. For instance, in Chapter 10 of Hebrews it states:

32 But recall the former days in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: 33 partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches and afflictions, and partly while you became companions of those who were so treated; 34 for you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven. 35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: 37 “For yet a little while, and He who is coming will come and will not tarry. 38 Now the just shall live by faith. But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” 39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. (Hebrews 10:32-39)

In other Chapters in Hebrews, the writer compares the New Testament saints "sojourn" to Heaven with the Israelites sojourn to the promised land, (i.e. the "rest" of God he was referring to in both cases). He starts off Chapter 4 with the following:

1 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them (the unbelieving Jews), but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. 3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said, “So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ”although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; 5 and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.” 6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disbelief, 7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said, “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 4:1-7)

Why did the Israelites harden their hearts and not enter in? Because they feared for their lives, knowing giants were in the land. And thus, the teaching here was simple: New Testament believers, if they would enter into the TRUE promised land which the holy land only typified, needed to believe God and NOT fear for their lives as the faithless Israelites did, but endure afflictions and persecution for His name's sake if necessary. God was angry with the cowardice and faithlessness exhibited by the Israelites who would not enter in, and therefore swore in His wrath that they never would, even after witnessing His power in manifestation. Thus, the writer was saying that we must not fall away in similar fear of what the enemy might do to us (and more specifically to our flesh). This is why he goes on to say in Chapter 6:

1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits. 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. 7 For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; 8 but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned. (Hebrews 6:1-8)

All of this sets the background for the teaching on the "milk and the meat" of the word in Chapter 5. Living out the gospel involves far more than just baptisms, or laying on of hands to receive anointings and outpourings (the "milk" of Christian teaching which is easy to digest). It must also involve teachings on enduring persecution and affliction in preaching the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

8 Although He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,” 11 of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God. And you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. (Hebrews 5:8-13)

How does this teaching relate to us today? I sometimes wonder if the modern church, especially in the West, receives much spiritual meat any more. There was once a time when what was going on with missions was a topic of regular discussion in churches. Not so much now. It seems like many churches nowadays don't give as much attention to the persecuted church anymore, and focus instead on teaching "the blessed life," even though James said the rich man is the one who endures trails and sufferings for the Lord (James 1:12).

I think several decades of prosperity teaching has had its effect upon our theology, and the mentality among many Christians now has switched back to the common (but mistaken) Old Testament mindset that the man who is "blessed" is the one who has things good in this life, rather than the one to come.

I have read the meat of the word to be the deeper, more complex teachings of God's Word. Persecution of believers would fall into this category for sure, but I don't believe it is the only thing. I'm wondering if things like word of knowledge/wisdom, dreams, and prophecy, would qualify as meat also.

Have to love this in The Message version. :)

Hebrews 6:1-3 So come on, let’s leave the preschool fingerpainting exercises on Christ and get on with the grand work of art. Grow up in Christ. The basic foundational truths are in place: turning your back on “salvation by self-help” and turning in trust toward God; baptismal instructions; laying on of hands; resurrection of the dead; eternal judgment. God helping us, we’ll stay true to all that. But there’s so much more. Let’s get on with it!

I think this is the most common interpretation.

If they dealt with very strong subject matter, yes. I know that dealing with demonic possession in dreams is not always all that easy to stomach. Btw, finished watching the movie "IT" last night. Not to bring up memories, but it makes me wonder...

Couldn't get passed this part without laughing. :lol

Yeah, I think I'll let you have the Message Bible. I'm heavy into strict translation of the original. If I read too much from paraphrases, I start to react to those the way your son reacted to his Frosty, LoL.

Then again, scripture says there's wisdom in the counsel of many.

So here's some dog wisdom for you.

It is hard to lay dreams down and pray about them, but I believe they distract me in some ways right now. Confusion is not of God and it disturbs me to the point I need to lay my emotions down and just stay in the Word at this point unless I get absolute clear direction. I pushed too hard before without any understanding. I want the steak and if any dream that I will mention I was eating and guarding the juiciest steak I ever had. I have disturbing ones and I'm just praying about them and best not talk about things I don't understand anymore. I will learn and grow in the Word of God and God will give me peace about all spiritual matters, dreams included if they are from Him to help myself or someone else.

And YES. That chocolate frosty was EVERYWHERE. LOL. It was horrible last night. Those It dream memories make me feel the same way.

Anyway, back to subject... There IS so many layers to the Word of God and we always need to be seeking revelation for deeper matters, even when it is hard to swallow. I pray that if I ever have to suffer persecution for righteousness sake like some other countries do, that I will have a spirit of boldness to stand strong in faith.

I think it’s easy to look across the ocean and realize how blessed we are. However, God uses us where we’re at, and I get the feeling you’ve already weathered a few storms which has built your faith. God is good!

I once did a study on Gods righteousness that started in the early chapters of Romans and then took me to Deuteronomy, then to Jesus. What I discovered was this. Gods righteousness is bound in His mercy. By that I mean mercy is always offered, which is core to Gods righteousness. When mercy is offered and then continually rejected or abused, then Gods justice prevails.

When I look at things this way, it helps me see all the times I’ve displayed Gods righteousness, and have been persecuted for it. Yet I’ve endured which has strengthened my faith through those experiences and trials in my life.

As I’ve said, I’ve got the feeling you’ve gotten into the meat of Gods word a few more times than you may realize. And Im very sure Hidden In Him has acquired the wisdom to bring us such a blessed teaching through many trials as well.

This thread has been a real blessing to me, thank you for sharing your wisdom, thoughts and expressions.

This site is a real blessing and you along with so many others have such kind hearts and words. God really has brought me through a good many storms in life. His faithfulness has comforted me where activating faith in trial isn't as hard as it used to be. And you are more then likely right I've gotten into the meat of God's Word more then I realize. I've surely been challenged spiritually and growing in many areas.

(And there ARE so many layers, not there IS so many. :study )

A couple of my favorite meat verses:

Psalm 42:3

My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

Gotta love a good strong association statement, huh?

Tears = meat in the spiritual senses

I mean who hasn't cried themselves to sleep?

An even meatier subject:

Hebrews 5:14

But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

If any reader has not yet discerned that they have both good and evil, in themselves, internally, they probably need to keep chewing til they get to their senses of these matters.

No one does only good, no, not one

When a reader understands, as Paul did in Romans 7:21, that evil "is" present with them, then their "senses" are being exercised to discern an internal fact, of how we are all constructed, with a good and evil conscience, Heb. 10:22. Many think within themselves, "I am not like the other sinners, I am always and only GOOD." Sound familiar? Ref. Luke 18's pharisee prayer, that God ignored, because it was a basic lie.

And the relationship from God will definitely change from a position of "God only and always loves me" to "I have a great fear of God because of the presence of evil within me, and God is both Glorious Savior and Mortal Foe."

The latter walk in truth. They have been led out of the shadows of hiding and lies and the coverups of fig leafs, into the exposure of His Glorious Light, even though that exposure can be quite painful to chew on

Psalm 18:28
For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.

The truest prayer is for the eradication of this part of ourselves. Until that day, we wait for it, our manifestation

If you don't know what the target is, there is no point in aiming. The target is painted on us, within.

I like how the verse stresses those full of age.
And what does David say of his youth? We even sing of it. 😙
Remember not… and the gals echo…

Hello, Smaller, and hope you are having a good Sunday.

The expression is ultimately talking about discerning good teaching from bad, but I like several of the things you said here, such as how our conscience can play in. The expression, "having been trained through the practice of the senses to have discernment of both good and bad" was I believe specifically a reference to how most Jews were so invested in the whole,"the righteous man will be blessed/fortunate in life but the wicked man will be poor/experience sufferings" mentality. This was so ingrained in Jewish thinking that it took many of them a while to rewire their mindset, even the disciples. When Jesus said to them, "It is harder for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of the needle," their response was, "Lord, who then can be saved?" They too were locked into the misconception that the rich were righteous and the poor were unrighteous, based on teachings like Deuteronomy 28. This is why James had to correct this assumption by teaching, "Blessed is the man who endures trials, for after he has endured he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love Him." James also referenced Job in his letter, who was accused of being "unrighteous" by his friends because he was suffering through trials which God was clearly allowing. But the end of God is to reward those who trust Him even in sufferings with even greater reward and honor. Unlike his friends, Job had grown spiritually to the place where he trusted God even in his sufferings, "perfecting endurance" like James wrote about in his letter.

But the conscience does indeed play in. As Job said, "Will we receive only good from God, and not the evils also?" It is training oneself to trust Him on a deeper level, even in the sufferings He allows us to go through, thus making Him truly Lord over our lives and not just Savior.

God bless, and thanks again for the post.

As Job said, "Will we receive only good from God, and not the evils also?"
Nice post and one of my favorite scriptures from Job.

Of course our forms of Christianity have so bombarded us with the false Gospels of prosperity and God only loves you messages it's problematic to see past it, unless of course, a believer has actually had a Job like experience

I have a particular fondness for the adverse side of the scriptural ledgers, applied personally, per Matt. 4:4, Luke 4:4

Hating our own lives per Luke 14:26, or being last instead of first or not loving our lives are not popular Gospel messages in today's self absorbed self indulgent world and the pews would be empty if these truths were told in any case. Probably why Jesus had only 12 disciples out of an entire nation of wannabe's

In Job's case, I'm pretty certain a lot of meat = tears were shed, and in the end he came to a truthful conclusion:

Job 42:6
Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

When we take on the fact and gravity of our own hearts being deceitful above all things, Jer. 17:9, and yes, it's a pretty big universe so that's the extremist form of deceit, having evil present with us, Romans 7:21, having sin in "thought forms" per many of Jesus statements of fact that these defile us, and sin being of the devil the math adds up very quickly to a truthful conclusion of self hatred, for at a minimum, the reality of these things. Doesn't mean God doesn't love us, but that's simply not all that's involved in this present life. We are factually engaging the adversary internally, and God IS Working against that entity in us. Which actually explains a LOT about the O.T. God, who hasn't changed a bit I might add.

It also lends perfect gravity to the "no one is righteous, no not one" and the "filthy rags" righteousness sights, among others detrimental to our false heady status.

I for one know that God Hates me at least as equally as loves me, that is beyond question.

Now go find a preacher that will tell you the truth and I'd say there really is only One, and that teacher is invisible

The Comforter comforts us BECAUSE of our adverse condition and the tears that it brings.

I suppose the basis for this thread is (Heb. 5:11-6:2). There, maturity is a factor. (5:14). And that maturity has been obtained through their actual use of the Word so that they have the ability to discern good and evil.

There is no one doctrine that is the meat of the Word. And there is no one doctrine that is the milk of the Word. The entire Bible has the milk of the Word. The entire Bible has the meat of the Word.

Ones maturity dictates what they are given. It is God who decides what you are able to take in. If you come to the Word as a babe, then you will be given the milk. If you come to the Word as an adult, then you will be given meat.

Paul, and I believe Paul wrote (Hebrews), is addressing the problem of those whose growth has been stunted. Nothing wrong with being a babe, if you are a babe, if you have just begun your Christian life. But, just like in the real world with a babe growing physically but who mentally remains a child, it is sad to see a believer who does not mature spiritually. Paul is saying by this time they should have matured enough to be teachers. (Heb. 5:12) They are spiritually retarded, or challenged.

Now, one might say this pertains to the Jewish Christians going back to the Law, back to the Levitical priesthood. And that is true it does. But we who are Christians today can fall into the same trap. Paul addressed that in (1 Cor.)

Paul's statement in (1 Cor. 2:2) is often spoken with tremendous vocal authority from the pulpit, to emphasize ones dedication to God and Christ. I'm sure I have spoken it myself. "For I determined not to know any thing among you save Jesus Christ, and him crucified." But this is actually an indictment against the Corinthians. Due to their carnality which means babes, (3:1), that is all they could be given. Jesus Christ crucified.

My point being, whatever spiritual level you are at, will determine what the Lord will give you out of His Word.
