Growth “The Carnal Mind”

In some degree, all are carnal, for as one who cannot “take fire into his bosom” without “being burned” (Pro 6:27), so cannot man, in possessing the sinful nature be completely void of carnality. Because of the “old man,” even the greatest of man’s wisdom is “foolishness with God” (1 Cor 3:18), thus, any heavenly wisdom which proceeds from man originates from God. This is not to the intention that a believer can be “carnal minded” (Rom 8:6, 7), who being regenerated can be carnal in maturity (1 Cor 3:1, 3) but not carnal minded.

Being carnal minded defines an unregenerate, an unbeliever who “minds the things of the flesh” (8:5), e.g. whose ways continue to be dominated by the sinful nature, resulting in an absent desire for God. This involves being in “enmity against God” (v 7) resulting in “death” (v 6), neither of which concerning the believer will again be encountered.

The word “mind” in this text defines desires, intents and purposes, thus to be carnal minded identifies one whose main desires are to gratify the sinful nature, rather than pleasing God—which defines one who is “spiritually minded” (v 5)—and occurs only through regeneration (born again; rebirth; translated).

Therefore, if a vessel is not being “conformed” (Rom 8:29), the Conformer has yet to begin His work, which cannot fail (John 6:37). It is of enduring encouragement to know the “irrevocability” (Rom 11:29 NKJV) of the grace of God which has wrought a work within the life of a believer, therefore regardless the level of the opposition (Satan, self, society) His work will unfailingly continue—“until the redemption of the purchased possession” (Eph 1:14).

The believer has been redeemed in his spirit and soul and now awaits the redemption of the body (Rom 8:23), which is “of the saints, of the church of God, who are bought with a price, and are purchased with his blood; and who, as they were redeemed from sin, Satan, and the law, when they were purchased, so will be redeemed again in the resurrection morn, which is called the day of redemption, Ephesians 4:30.

“Which will be a redemption of them from the weakness, corruption, and mortality of the body; from their present state of absence and pilgrimage; from the body of sin and death; from all sorrows and afflictions, both inward and outward; from the reproaches and persecutions of men; from a tempting devil, and an unbelieving heart; from all doubts and fears; and from death and the grave.

“The Syriac version very justly renders it, "until the redemption of them that are saved." Now till such time, the Spirit of God abides as an earnest, even until the whole felicity is enjoyed both in soul and body; and this shows the perpetuity of the Spirit's inhabitation, and grace, the final perseverance of the saints, and the security of the inheritance to them.” -J G

The manifestations of regeneration are realized as “the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God,” and in the dichotomy that “the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would” (Rom 8:16; Gal 5:17); an opposition of which is nonexistent in an unregenerate.

Colossians 3:5 admonishes to “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” The “members” hereto referred are contained within what is said to be “the body of sin” (Rom 6:6) which is the “old man,” and realizing the mortification process in the saint is performed “through the Spirit” (Rom 8:13) most clearly explains the relationship between the believer and the old man.

The Spirit’s work here is best understood in His opposition to “the flesh” within the believer (Gal 5:17), which is the sinful nature and “is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be” (Rom 8:7). This is demonstrable in the outward actions called “the deeds of the body” (Rom 8:13). As the Spirit’s conforming (not conforming self but “being conformed” – Rom 8:29) work continues, the works originating from the old man progressively decrease, thus glorifying God by manifesting the fruit (work) of the Spirit through the believer.

It is when the saint is brought to the end of himself (old self) that it can be most clearly seen that love to God cannot manifest itself more than in the desire to “love one another,” which should be remembered to be the designated goal in all things (John 13:34, 35; 15:12, 17; Rom 13:8; 1 Thes 4:9; 1 Pet 1:22; 1 John 3:11, 23; 1 John 4:7, 11, 12; 2 John 1:5; Gal 5:13; Eph 4:2; 1Th 3:12; Heb 10:24; 1Pe 3:8).

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit...

5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors--not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life ...

It seems there is a conflict within each of us who believe, a choice to invest or sow, as debtors, not live for the desires of the flesh, but rather, seek to overcome these desires of the flesh, by investing in the life of the spirit within.

To set our minds on the things above.

To willfully choose to meditate on things which are holy and of good report, things that are righteous.

And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Romans 6:13

Thank you for this word Brother.

Hi JLB - Thanks for your input Brother. It is my conviction that Romans 8 is given in more of a distinctive sense rather than an admonition, i.e contrasting those who are born again with those who are "in the flesh" (Rom 8:9).

These are descriptions given in this chapter of the saved and unsaved, e.g. evidences or fruits of the person's nature. Scripture often contrasts evidences between the believer and unbeliever which is misinterpreted that even though God is working in them a godly desire (Phl 2:13), they can somehow desire to work against it. Such a concept is not sensible and would present doubt to the grace of God concerning the addition of the new nature, which confounds Scripture's contrasts between those who are His and the unbeliever.

Oh, ok.

I see what you are saying.

How do I understand this statement by Paul?

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

I always thought this was written to someone who is in Christ Jesus.

Please help me to understand, where the saved person and the unsaved person is in this verse.

I also see the same reference to a brother in Christ in this verse as well.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors--not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

I always thought brethren was the one who was being addressed here, and the brethren is referred to as you in the next sentence.

How do you see this?

Is there a saved and unsaved one being addressed in these verses?

Thanks JLB

Colossians 3:1-25 is a great guideline as to crucify this flesh and walk in the Spirit of God that we need not be found in disobedience to the Lord. Our thoughts, our actions and our speech needs to be that of a loving Spirit that dwells in us as we show love to one another as Christ loves us.

I see the contrast implied by assuming the invert, i.e. those who walk according to the flesh are not in Christ, and are under condemnation.

In Scripture and in life it is refreshing and rare to meet ecclesia who are not carnal, but who are truly living the life of Yhvh in Yeshua HaMashiach as Yhvh purposed before the creation of the world.
Most people never meet someone who is not carnal, so they have trouble believing it is possible; or they do meet and know, and even see daily, ecclesia who are not carnal, but they don't want to pay the price to join them.
I think Corinthians, Ephesians, Galatians, Timothy, 1 and 2 John, 1 and 2 Peter, and the Gospel of John all show this very simply and clearly. (not making it any easier for the carnal, but these have the simple straightforward directions and descriptions from Yeshua and the Apostles on how to become alive in Yeshua and how to test one-self and each other within the ecclesia to become constantly more pure and guard (one-self and each other) against becoming tricked by sin or flesh.

I know of no Scriptural references supporting that a man can be completely free of carnality, which would to be without sin. Concerning those who are "pure" (Tit 1:15) they are all who are holy in Christ, which does not admit in degrees, e.g. either one is pure and holy, or not.

Hi FHG - Col 2:6 establishes they "have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord," hence Paul's assumption "If ye then be," which equates with "since or seeing you are" (3:1), which will manifest itself in their "seeking those things which are above."

I appreciate you've indicated that which is of the most importance: "love to one another as Christ loves us."

Thanks Sis!

yes, i gathered that from the op. like i said, it is rare to meet ecclesia who are free from carnality. perhaps a few other members have met some, but not many. the Scripture is there but not to be grasped any more than the disciples could understand until it was time in Yhvh's Plan, if and when Yhvh permits.

I have recently posted this on another subject matter.

Many Christians are fans only of Lord Jesus Christ. They aren't followers because they have been "REDTAGED" by God. This means because you have the wrong foundation God will not allow you to "MATURE." Hebrews 6:1-3 NASB (notice what the scripture says " if God permits.")

It is imperative and so important that a Christian received all three Baptisms: Salvation (Blood) - Water and Spirit 1 John 5:7-8 NASB

1. The Baptism in the Body of Christ (Born again) - 1 Corinthians 12:13 NASB
When you became save the Holy Spirit emerges you into the Body of Christ (Jesus). To Go to heaven you only need this 1st Baptism as the Thief on the Cross did. The Holy Spirit does this Baptism.

2. The Baptism of Water - Matthew 28:19 NASB

3. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit - Matthew 3:11 NASB - Mark 1:8 NASB - Luke 3:16 NASB - John 1:33 NASB - Luke 24:49 NASB - Acts 1:4-5 NASB - Acts 1:8 NASB - 1 John 5:7-8 NASB
Lord Jesus Christ does the Baptism. Jesus emerges you into the Holy Spirit.

Pray at this time to ask Jesus to Baptize and fill you with the Holy the Spirit. He will if you have done 1 and 2 Baptisms.

Again to go to heaven you just need to be saved. To walk a victorious life you need Water Baptism and Spirit Baptism.

Your the first person I have seen on any forum that sees three Baptism's. :salute :thumbsup

Most people try to deny even two Baptism's, saying that The Baptism of the Holy Spirit was only for the first century!

HI ILG - Thanks for your input. I believe every saint is given all that is needed (2 PET 1:3) to be as God desires them to be, and progressively appropriates it as He works in them.

3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue... 2 Peter 1:3

I see this divine power as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." Acts 1:8

and again -

4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

My son, pay attention to what I say;
turn your ear to my words.
21 Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body.
Proverbs 4:20-22 NIV

This is why faith comes by hearing the word of God. Jesus commanded us to make Disciples and be the salt and light of the world.

Before the Spirit was "given" (John 7:39) believer's were not born again (regenerated), which then was sequential to believing. After the Spirit was given God used the Apostles and other disciples to introduce the Spirit even though they were believer's, but since then, faith is no longer antecedent to regeneration of the Spirit, but simultaneous.

True, no one can know about the need for salvation without hearing the Gospel of it, which is true for all since the time of Christ and His disciples.

The Baptism of the Spirit comes after the regeneration of the New birth.

20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
John 20:20-23

This was before the Day of Pentecost.

We see this pattern throughout the book of Acts -

2 he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

At this moment, these disciples of John's were born again, and Baptized into the Name of Jesus.

Then after this -

6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Acts 19:2-6

3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue... 2 Peter 1:3

I see this divine power as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The Baptism of the Spirit comes after the regeneration of the New birth.
Regeneration cannot occur without the Spirit's baptism.

JLB said:
He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

"This breathing on them, and the words that attended it, were a symbol, pledge, and confirmation, of what they were to receive on the day of Pentecost: hence it appears, that it is the Spirit of God, who, by His gifts and grace, makes and qualifies men to be ministers of the Gospel; and our Lord by this action, and these words, gives a very considerable proof of His deity."
