2 Peter 2:21-22

2Pe 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

What is the "way of righteousness" according to gospel? Of course this is the "righteousness of faith" and those who "turn" from faith back to the law of Moses are those to whom this warning is speaking.

Mt 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Ro 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Ro 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Ro 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Ro 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus

Ro 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.

Ro 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
Ro 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Php 3:9 ¶ And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Be sure the "the way of righteousness" is the righteousness of faith and those who are like the dog that returns to its vomit, and the sow to its wallow, are those who look to the "law"-Ten Commandments etc... to be justified.

But you sure do know how to go against the very last warning seen in Rev. 22:18-19 with having any name removed from the Book of Life.

As far as the warning of Revelations, I cannot see any relation to the points made on this thread.

How is it that people who depart from the faith always go to a false gospel of self-righteousness?

JLB will show you a website full of people who turned back to nothing.

But anyway I see you're non-OSAS. Perhaps you can join in that thread and show from the Bible how hard it is to defend OSAS.

George this is just one more scripture in a long line of scriptures that teach us the truth about our precious salvation.

20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.2 Peter 2:20-21

Clearly Peter refers to a person who has been saved through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, but latter turned from the holy commandment.

Peter says they have forsaken the right way.

15 They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;.

This is a another clear admonition to continue in the way of righteousness, once you repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

OSAS is clearly a man made doctrine.

It is surely by grace we are saved, and surely by grace we are kept in a state of salvation until the end of our faith.

Blessed be God the Father for His never ending mercy and loving kindness through our Lord jesus Christ.

If I remember correctly, in all my twenty-seven years of being a Christian I only know of one person, in a forum, that thought they had to keep the Ten Commandments in order to secure a declaration of right standing with God in heaven. Only one.

If you actually take the time to listen to what 'law keepers' say you'll hear that they seek to uphold the law (specifically, 'keep Sabbath' in their case) for the same reasons we seek to uphold the rest of the 10 commandments--because they have the righteousness of Christ by faith in Christ.

Their Sabbath keeping is an expression of their faith in God, not themselves, just as our 'do not steal, etc.' is our expression of our faith in God, not faith in ourselves.

Who am I to take that away from them and decide (judge) that they are doing it in order to justify themselves before God? Do I have the ability to peer into men's hearts and judge their motives? Nobody but God alone can do that.

There's no doubt that the passage George quotes is an argument for non-OSAS.

I don't know why we need things like deep Greek word studies to make plain scripture not mean what it so plainly says. If I tried to do that in a court of law I'd be scorned by cable news channels that talk about popular court cases.

Over and over I have made my position clear, that "in Grace" salvation is absolute. Only those who turn from the "way of righteousness" through legalism are in danger of rejecting the salvation of His Grace.

I could care less about the term "OSAS" it is not true for the legalist but only for those who continue in "grace"

The "way of righteousness" is the "righteousness of faith and Peter is warning those who would turn back to law, just as Paul did over and over.

2Pe 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:

"Having eyes full of adultery"- "spiritual adultery"
Ro 7:3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

"and that cannot cease from sin"- For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law,

"an heart they have exercised with covetous practices;"-Ro 7:7 ¶ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

;" cursed children:"-Ga 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

But thank God that our flesh was crucified with Christ and, therefore, we have been set free from the power of the law to keep us in sin like a marriage license that keeps a woman bound to her husband (marriage ends when there is a death).

"6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin." (Romans 6:6-7 NASB)

And because this is true, that our old husband 'flesh' is dead, we have been set free from the power of the law to keep us bound to sinful flesh and are now free to uphold the law through the power of God's love by the Holy Spirit at work in us.

We are justified by faith in the blood of Christ, all by itself, apart from the doing of any righteous works. Legalism is relying on the performance of works of righteousness to be justified. Only the blood of Christ can wipe away sin guilt. That blood is applied by our trust in that blood.

The death of Christ is what made the law powerless to condemn us in sin. Therefore, the only way to come back under the power of the law to condemn is to abandon Christ and turn to reliance on the righteous things you do, or trust in nothing at all.

Not sure of your point? Of course many have and do return to the law, and this is why so many warnings are made of this very thing.

Ga 5:4

Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. (from grace to law)

There are two laws! Which one of the two is it that you speak of??

Not sure of your question? The law of Moses is "all things written in the book of the law" -every jot and tittle is the standard, and the law of Moses is not in two parts?

2Pe 2:10 ¶ But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

Ga 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

Ga 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
This is only true if you are trying to be justified by law keeping. What Paul says only has application to the person who is trying to be justified by keeping the law.

Well according to scripture "the law is not of faith" and this is the topic of this thread, you are free to start a thread on your topic.

The topic of this thread is 2 Peter 2:21-22

20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.

Them here is referring to the pollutions of the world, not the Law of Moses.

21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.

The way of righteousness involves a holy commandment. REPENT!

Of course many have and do return to the law, and this is why so many warnings are made of this very thing.

Ga 5:4

Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. (from grace to law)

Do you have any statistics on that? Like I say, I've only known of one person in all my 27 years of being a Christian that said they must keep the law of Moses to be declared righteous.

Now I know in the church many turn the duties of being a Christian--witnessing, reading your Bible, church attendance, etc.--into a kind of 'law' that they think makes them okay with God. That I see in the church, but not Christians keeping the law of Moses for the purpose of being justified. If you could provide some statistics about what denoms or sects believe that compared to all denoms that would be helpful.

I came to the conclusion many years ago that so much in the NT is dedicated to the problem of the Judaizers, not because many will continue to believe the law is how you are justified, but because the problem of thinking that your righteous obedience in general (church attendance, doing right, etc.) is what makes you right with God would persist in the church to the end. But the belief that the law of Moses was what justifies a person--no, that didn't last very long. The concept (being justified by what you do) did.

Not sure of your question? The law of Moses is "all things written in the book of the law" -every jot and tittle is the standard, and the law of Moses is not in two parts?

What is in two parts is seen in Deut. 31:9-10 & placed it in [the side] of, not inside of the Ark of God. Deut. 31:26-27 One is the Heb. 13:20 Covenant which God Himself wrote.

Much of Moses laws were finished as the Sanctuary separation (curtain) rent. Making way into the Most Holy Place where Christ is now doing His last work.
This was what the question was asking about which of the two laws was about.

I find much confusion about most of this.

REPENT!

No the law is not sin, it holds people in bondage to sin "for the strength of sin is the law"

And of course Peter is warning fellow Jews about turning back from faith " for the law is not of faith"
