(please don't karate chop me by accident!)

LOL! I'm just curious to see what everyone thinks of this type of activity. :)

JMO If a Christian engages in martial arts, or whatever name it should be given, as long as he/she sticks to the physical exercise without getting into any questionable spiritual activity (questionable according to the user's conscience) then I don't see anything wrong with it. I often thought about getting my younger boys into karate. They preferred basketball though. :)

Not a spiritual activity at all for me!! I agree completely and I've run in to these types. :nono

GojuBrian!

WoW, Look at you go, gojuBrian!

I did see this post awhile ago, I was a little intimidated to cheer you on, because I don't know what a 3rd dan test is. But I do love the pic's (especially those two cuties with you.)

I think this is so cool. Are you a black belt! We had a Tae Kwon Do instructor that went to our church. He taught it at Adult Ed. I took a couple of classes, then life got in the way. He was so cool, because instead of saying "concentrate on your third eye" (or what ever they say). He would say pray to the Lord and concentrate on His goodness.

How do you handle that part of it. The mystic side?

If my friends at work are picking on me (they like to tease me, because I am a 7 year old, living in a 52 year old body) I tell them "I guess you didn't know I have taken two Tae Kwan Do Lessons"

Love, Kelli

Now I'm sorry I wasn't specific before,lol.

3rd dan = 3rd degree blackbelt. I made shodan(1st degree in 1998). I've been doing Goju since 1991. I also have done several other arts. :) I've had some breaks inbetween though.

there is no mystic side to it, just hard work. Some people turn it into a philosophical sesspool, bbut that's not our style. We are christians who practice martial arts, not mystic martial artists. :)

I'll add some more pics soon. I left some film in the camera when I had this roll developed, lol.

Those kiddos are my Hannah and Noah!! :) :halo :help :crazy :D

Whoa, I feel like I should ask permission to come into your topic!!! :nod You are really up there! Do you also teach? I wish I could find Christian martial arts classes for my girls. I need prayer because I am way overprotective of them and my husband. I would just feel so much better if my girls had some fightin skills.

I can't wait to see the new pics! Do your Hanna and Noah take lessons? Do they have a belt?

Kelli

Noah started judo 8months ago. He has his first tournament in tulsa in two weeks. I don't think a striking art is best for young uns'. Their little bones are still forming and they can only generate so much power. I think it might build a false sense of security. I do think judo, jujitsu, or wrestling is ideal for little ones and girls in particular. These arts can teach them how to escape and how best to use their body for the amount of coordination they have.
Hannah is not really into it right now. She does like her dancing though! She has a dance rehearsal this weekend. :)

There are three key things to self defense and they don't require fighting skills.

1. Avoidance- don't put yourself in the position to be a victim. Stay away from people or places you probablu shouldn't be in the first place. Lock your doors, leave the lights on,etc..be prepared.

2. Awareness- Always be aware of your surroundings. Look for suspicious people and avoid them, even if you have to cross the street. Don't blantantly flaunt your posessions,etc...basic common sense.

3. Stay in a group- Always use the buddy system, never venture out on your own unless it's unavoidable.

We do teach karate and we have self defense seminars as well. Free of charge! :)

Great advice, Brian! What a wonderful ministry - self defense seminars for free? That's awesome!

You'll be in my neck of the woods! (I'm in Oklahoma)

Well, those pictures didn't quite turn out, lol.

I need to get a digital camera and make things easier on myself. :screwloose

Thanks Brian that was good advice! I am such a weirdo with my poor girls, BreAuna my oldest is 19, and my youngest Tayler, Is 16. I have told the poor things what to do in case they are locked in a trunk, or if they are in a car... I was worse when they were younger, but I am getting better. I have to be, they are driving and I would go insane if I was still as freaked out about something happening to them or my husband. God has been working on me for years about that. I think I can control any problem that comes into their lives, and make the road smooth for them.

I think back on all the rough spots God has brought me through, and how sweet that was, and I realize how much I am taking away from my girls.... WOW! where did that come from... :oops <<< that's my favorite doda because I always need to say woops! :o

So... :topictotopic Digital cameras are getting cheaper and cheaper, you should really get one because you want to document you sport. Not many get to the level you are at.

Love Kelli

I think it's a good thing to be wary of the dangers in society and be as prepared for them as we can. I really don't think God wants us to act like nothing can harm us or act like we live in a bubble. The Bible warns us of the evil in this world.

That's pretty cool Brian!

Back in my mid teen years, I had a couple years of boxing and about a year of kempo and loved them both, although I'll settle for my running for now :lol

What kind of things can us average folk do to get our balance back?

Thank you sir!! :nod

Hmmmmm......good question.

In kempo you practiced kata, right? Kata is good practice for balance, but you have to have someone to teach you, so.....

I've always been pretty clumsy and awkward really. :) If not for karate I'd fall all over myself. In fact, I often run into doors and corners in my house, lol. When I'm at the dojo I've been told I look very graceful, maybe it's a mindset.

Hey Brian,
Sorry for the delay. Actually, the boxing and kempo class I took was in Juvenile Detention :lol Most of the Kempo was how to defend ourselves if somebody came up from behind you, or if they grabbed you from the front etc along with some basic kicks etc. Hey, I was still a white belt and honestly, I enjoyed the physical pounding that boxing allotted at the time :lol . If we learned Kata, I'm probably not familiar with the term.

I wouldn't call myself clumsy, but I would like to get some of my balance back. For example, there is a stretch where standing up, I hold one foot tight to my glutes and then touch my toe with my other hand. It seems that the more I run, the better my balance is becoming because my balance is getting better where as when I first started doing this stretch again, if there wasn't a wall nearby to hold, I was soon kissing the ground :lol

Yoga can help, with that or something like it. Yoga has a lot downfalls thought mainly in the mystiscm. So be careful. I took Brazilian Jujitsu which has a lot yoga but uses the flexablity to strenghten the guard. My instructor said if youre inflexable you wont make it past purple belt. :salute

Makes me wonder just how flexible one has to be to be a blackbelt in certain style.

I can do the splits and kick well past over my head, cold, but if you want to see me do one of those 360degree tkd kicks for get about it!

I thought about suggesting yoga and I guess I did some yoga to complete my p90x program, but pure yoga stylist will not permit you to be a christian.

There's more to BJJ than the typical arm bar, and triangle choke, oma plata, gogo plata, knee bar, kimora, ankle lock, and guillotine. These all work, and are white belt techniques. The basics in a fight also work. But the flexibility is needed to sometimes to block these and to do crazy guard, and rubber guard. BJJ has millions of techinques with the gi and a few with no gi( which what u see with mma). A good example of needed flexibility is the counter for the cruficix( done with both gi or no gi) you roll over you attecker into side control.

BJJ is an art that you dominate your attacker then submit him. My instructor even though he lost some flexibility can still put his legs behind his head. This art helped me with my back pains. It requires extreme core strength( weak core= weak guard). I was in a carwreck years ago and there's minimal curviture in my neck( causing headaches periodically) . This art helps that. Lord i miss doing this art.

This art is old school no tests all belts are earned not given, and the time to get black belt is about 10 years. I only made it white with three stripes. The testing done when you don't know( usually not formal). The only formality is when u put new rank on. The teacher watches u are looks for improvement( u tap out less, or u submit others, or move well)

Sorry to deviate, i just had to comment
