Acquired Instinct

Although the two words don't seem to go together....and are somewhat self-contradictory, however I believe it is acquired: it is derived. Soldiers don't come into the world with killer instinct, do they? NO! I believe the answer is NO. However, should we learn and practise to kill? Not all soldiers go to war and kill. So lets talk about those who go to war. Are they born with the instinct to courageously kill? Is it acquired or derived? It takes a lot of courage to be a soldier, the type that has boldness to terminate life. I wonder what the bible says about acquired/derived instinct/determination to kill. Such courage is 'earned'. Strange words! Sorry about the ranting

Jude 1:10 But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves.
Do you think this verse deals with instinct?

It's talking about apostates.

Somewhat, maybe

Instinct is not like a required taste, but of how one is instructed from and early age.

Job 38:36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

2Pe 2:12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
2Pe 2:13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;
2Pe 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
2Pe 2:15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
2Pe 2:16 But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet.

Instinct.Are we born with it?Even animals have instinct.

Yeah, to run from man. I wonder if there's a lesson in there somewhere, lol. Was is immediately after the fall that animals ran from man?

Seriously, I think that basic instincts are part of the gift of life, however, there are acquired instincts as Classik pointed out. I agree with him.

I got a good question after pondering this for a moment...

Are they really acquired instincts, that we acquire? Or could it be something else as yet unnamed?

I'm thinking along the lines of like say...after seeking God for awhile, and He reveals certain things to us...we sort of get a "knowing" in our heart. Could this be confused with instincts at times?

Do you think that the conscience is also a gift of life?

I thought everyone was born with a conscience.Not everyone has the Holy Spirit.Only born again believers.

New Testament sister! In the OT, the did not have the Holy Spirit for everyone. Now everyone is. I suppose that we should at this point ask what is conscience. The ability to discern good from evil? Aha! So it could be the Holy Spirit. We don't really know if non-believing OT people had consciences for sure so we can only try to reason it out.

I am confused by this statement. :confused Are you saying that everyone has the Holy Spirit?Yes that would be my definition of a conscience.Knowing what is right and wrong.Some people can ignore their conscience for for long that it is not working anymore.

Yes I am. And yes, if one ignores their conscience long enough (rejects the Holy Spirit), then He will leave them. Praise God that he is longsuffering! God is amazing! :)

No Edward only the Born Again believers have in them the Holy Spirit Romans 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
The conscience is a whole different ball game.

Conscience and the Holy Spirit? They are totally different. An animal that feeds the weeping young ones has feeling or affection towards the babies. Would it be right to say they have the Holy Spirit?
