I think it depends on the person and the situation. God deals with each of us differently. For me personally, putting off the old and putting on the new was step #1. This meant burying a shady past and working on a solid future in Christ Jesus. I also feel that, for me, working out my salvation with fear and trembling is a big deal. I have to learn a healthy fear of The Lord.
For other people, being saved may mean immediate changes in relationships or lifestyle. I've seen "radically saved" people who got saved, gave up drugs, and dove right into their newfound faith. I think character development is big for all Christians, particularly new ones. For me, learning compassion and forgiveness was huge, as was praying for (and also trying to cultivate) the perfect love that casteth out all fear.
