References to not letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing; seeking acknowledgement in this life negates reward in the next; etc.
Well that depends on the person, some don't want the recognition but they get it anyway. That's just like in my church, we have people do stuff in the background, and don't want to be out front. But then my pastor or others bring them to the front of the church for a award or make the congregation aware of their Kingdom deeds.

They should politely decline. Why would a pastor do such a thing? Makes no sense in light of Scripture.

This is quite common in non-denom and AG churches. I know a gentlemen who always refuses to come up to the stage when the pastor wants to recognize him. Very humble man.
 
It is ok to give somebody recognition as long as that person is not ego crazy. It is ok to tell somebody that they have done well.
