An interesting perspective

He actually wrote a 422 page book entitled, "Saints In The Arms of a Happy God." Frankly that disgusting sermon of Edwards', almost makes me puke.
Some may need that style of sermon some not what ever it takes...
Jud_1:23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

You and I read THAT verse much differently.

23Save others by snatching them from the fire [of hell]. Show mercy to others, even though you are afraid that you might be stained by their sinful lives.

Raised in despinsational teaching there was some back and forth about 7 or 3 1/2 trib...... The classic PK i was.. Mom is getting worried about me I got the Jesus could come back any time speech.... if your not ready its the trib.....With out being snotty or rude to mom.. ( had i been my trib would have happened) I told her.. ok Mom i will live how i want and then when Jesus comes back.. i will not deny Him get my head chopped off and see ya all in heaven,,,,
if you aren't looking for the signs of his return to rapture the church you will be left behind.

ok where is that in the bible? if one is doing the work of the lord, one wont be left , yet I never hear the reverse. one is just watching and not trying to win souls. though many futurists I know do try to win souls. to be fair. sounds like a worked based gospel to me.

My personality and mom knew me...In the old days a small town dump was often a fire pit.. We are at the dump it is burning...the sides sorta slide down... one would not be able to climb out. with out help..... as we are looking over the side... mom said You dont really want to go to hell do you? i laughed the nervies laugh...

A couple years later in the back of a car kids drinking etc that picture came to mind... it did that more then once.... what ever it takes...

I was baptized out of fear. But I did not run TO Jesus' love, I was running FROM the threat of fire. It was thirty years later that I responded to that love.

I get that he's wants the church to sit down and chill out.
Sort of. He really detests the preaching of fear........ which he admits that he was VERY good at doing for many years.

God will save you if you are the predetermined chosen elect was his the salvation message. Pray and maybe God will save you, no promises you may not be one of the chosen.
I can understand preaching judgment to those who aren't saved but to have no solution for the ones you are preaching to this is bizarre to me. What's the point of the sermon?
If that's the case, skip church and just go fishing. God will save you at the lake or wherever you happen to be.

I've actually had people tell me that the reason they tell people about God is so that, whether or not they respond, they get told, so that the END can be hastened. Have you ever heard anything so horrible? They honestly don't seem to care if people can eventually be led to God, just so long as the word got preached at them.
Whoever these peope are they don't sound like genuine Christians. There is nothing in the Bible to cause Christians to talk such nonsense (unless they are totally misapplying Mk 13:10). Looks like a fringe group looking for fringe benefits.

The other side of the coin are those Christians who have been deceived into thinking that the "end-times" ended in the first century, and now everything is "hunky dory". The question for them is "Are you living in the Millenium, or are you living in Wonderland?"

The main thing is that you got saved, and each one comes to Christ as the Holy Spirit either convicts or convinces. Nothing to make an issue of.

To the contrary, on that last part. The end times BEGAN in that first century. You and I both can quote scripture written 2,000 years ago that speaks of being in the end times. They wrote that about themselves, back then, not some future people, 50 generations removed.

How long will these "end times" that the world has been in for two millennia last? Who knows? All the "signs" were in evidence way back then, have continued being observed right on up through all history, and are still happening today. So, who's to say that the true "final day" when Jesus finally returns won't possibly be for even another 20,000 years..... or more?

I'm not all that sure, sometimes. Since the meaning of "I never knew you" indicates the lack of an intimate relationship.... NOT just obediently getting wet, I do wonder if, back then, I might have been one of those who might have been surprised to hear Jesus say those awful words.

What is it about that sermon that makes you sick?

These are the same people who feel they "have done their duty" by telling some poor soul outside a bar, that they are going to Hell (As if they didn't already know that in their hearts), and then walking smugly on down the road, saying to themselves, "Hey, I TOLD them, (spent a whole three minutes with them) now it's on their head.".... All the while thinking that was somehow, "doing God's will."

Most of it. And just about everything I have also read about the accounts of reactions and responses of the people in the church, listening to it. Not to mention that 12 people committed suicide after hearing that sermon... one of which was Edwards' own cousin, I believe it was. (Been a lot of years since I gave that sort of stuff much attention.)

Edwards was called upon to preach and preach he did, perhaps he read this text before that sermon..

II Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

Hey, you can feel any way you care.... even exalt the man if you want (After all, he DID get a lot moving in America), but if I heard a man saying that stuff from a pulpit, I would probably just walk on out the front door. I didn't know any better years ago. Today, I just can't stomach that kind of fear mongering.
