Well, there have been a couple threads since I was here in the past, but they're now ancient by forum thread standards.
So, any anime fans here?

I began watching anime a couple of years ago.
My favorite series out of those I've watched so far are:
-Fullmetal Alchemist (series I started with)
-Clannad After Story
-Angel Beats!
-Soul Eater
-Sword Art Online
-Madoka Magica (finished most recently)

I prefer dubbed anime when it's available, though if not I'll watch the original version with subtitles. In some cases I've watched both all the way through, cases when I began watching a series before a dub was released. Dubs get a bad rap by certain groups of fans because they used to be heavily censored, but that's not the case anymore.
 
I could never stand watching anime. The animation style just rubs me the wrong way.
 
I like it because it's closer to traditional animation, which I prefer to today's 3D graphics. But the particular cartoon style does take some getting used to.
 
Im not into anime as I once was, but I watched these:
1) robotech
2) the American anime exosquad, man watching that after going to war , I saw things there that I did remember but never really understood till I went to war
I knows there is more but I cant remember.
 
Currently watching a series called Death Note. It was a pretty popular anime/manga. It's genres are detective fiction, psychological thriller, and supernatural (according to Wikipedia). I think it could probably also be described as a crime drama.
Haven't read the manga, and may not ever read it, but I've seen 19 episodes (of 37) of the anime. It's good, and very interesting.

Another series I just finished watching (I was watching it weekly as it aired on TV) was Blue Excorcist. It's interesting. The main character, Rin, discovers he's part demon...and even more shocking, that his father was Satan.
Rin's stepfather is an excorcist, and raised Rin and his brother as normal human children. But when Rin's nonhuman powers start awakening, demons start coming after him. Including Satan himself.

Well, a lot of things happen, but what I found interesting is that the characters attend a Catholic school. And Scripture is actually quoted to defeat demons.

The plot overall mixes Japanese mythology and stuff (also doesn't portray demons as entirely evil), so is it an accurate representation of Christianity or even Catholicism? Obviously not. But I still found it interesting, and I want to read the manga.
 
Fair enough. I do find mythology and mythological views on the supernatural interesting, though. In the same way Greek mythology sparks an interest.

exosquad is considered the first American anime. I love that because Im a vet. I watched that years ago back in 1996, watched it again two years ago and really saw what they were talking about.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is sometimes considered an American anime, to the point it's often found in the anime category. But going by the definition "anime = cartoon made in Japan", it isn't and the animation style is just borrowed from anime. That said, in Japan, "anime" is simply a shortening of the word "animation" and is used to refer to any animated media.

exosquad was written by a man who did a lot of work with xmen and other shows. I cant remember his name. and no its not jms.
 
Just finished Death Note. Not a happy ending. But then, I didn't expect it to be.
At first I thought the next to last episode was the last one, so when it ended with a cliffhanger I was like "what a troll-ish ending!!!" But then Netflix pulled the next episode up.
Hm...I guess it may have been a happy ending in a sense...would depend on whether or not you agree with the protagonist's actions. Still, even then, I'd say it's bittersweet at best...a series dealing with crime isn't exactly supposed to be cheerful. I enjoyed the back and forth between the protagonist and antagonist, to see who would catch the other...I'd say the plot makes you think, too.

Next up...Magi. Appears to be based off the Arabian Knights.
 
Magi...yes. I've barely begun the series (only watched 6 episodes), but I like it so far.

Hm...advisory warning, a bit of nudity in this series. And the typical anime content, some sexual humor and such. (Japan has different ideas about what's acceptable than the US does, some things show up in kid's programs there that would getting a higher content rating here. I couldn't sit here and tell you exactly what, but there are some specific content issues that are very common in anime.) ...I should probably make this a bit more clear when I post about anime on here. ^^;

Not sure what the overall content rating for Magi would be, but I have a friend who is 14 and recommended this series to me. She would have told me if it was supposed to be adult rated or something. (Not to mention she wouldn't have watched it if it was adult rated.) I think it's rated for teens, like most of the series out there.

Oh, and I keep pronouncing it "Ma-jie", but it's actually pronounced "Mah-ghi"--apparently.

Now that Naruto is over I'm finding myself quite interested in Inyuasha, actually. (Inyuasha: The Final Act has been airing on Toonami.) Oh, and I began reading the manga version of Blue Excorcist. (My current avatar is the main character, Rin.) The anime breaks off for it's own storyline after about 15 episodes, so the plot in the manga is a little different. While I don't really like it when anime strays too far from the original story, it would be boring for them to both be exactly the same.

Also, Dragon Ball Z Kai started airing on Toonami. I plan to catch the weekly episodes as long as they air 'em. The battles drag on wayyyy too long, but it seems interesting enough still.

Currently I'm still on Magi. Been busy, so haven't had a ton of time to watch a lot of anime. After I'm done with Magi, I'm thinking I may watch Black Butler.
