Are humans animals?

Science has made huge progress in discovery, but has done a poor job of disseminating that knowledge to most people. Average people take the modern world for granted, and don't really understand anything around them, and how it works or how it was made.

When Copernicus suggested that the Earth was not the center of the universe in the 1500's he was labeled a heretic. I think it is safe to say that most people now accept that as true. It did take hundreds of years to catch on though.

Science says we are mammals just like dogs or whales I think it obviously true, but would like to see what others think. Has knowledge that we are animals as widely believed as the knowledge that the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around.

God made us different and separate from animals so even though we share similar body functions and composure we are infinity different. Of course Godless science will disagree and say we are just highly evolved animals, just one more reason why evolution and Christianity do not mix.

I don't want to discuss the theory of evolution. Whether we are or not animals should be easy to judge, and come to a conclusion.

Why aren't we animals? What observable phenomenon makes us not an animal?

Sure they do. When I came home and found my dog had relieved herself on the rug, she acted like it wasn't her.

I believe that Genesis 1 makes it clear that Animals are also "Living Souls" (Flesh and Breath)

What makes humans distinct as a "Living Soul", is that God 'formed' us from the earth and then breathed into us ("The Lord God formed the man from the soil of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life" and was "Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness"); where as with the other living souls, he simply said, "Let the land produce living creatures ".

animals act on instinct primarily. they do have feelings but arent able to control them all the time. ie they want to mate they do.

we have choices, are the whales intellegent and speak a laynguage. if so why havent some tried to communicate to us and let us know that they dont want to die.

We are made in the image of God. Animals are not.

Perhaps scientifically we are similar but highly evolved, but the bottom line is that there is a big difference as to how we were formed and what our purpose is.

Humans are animals. We eat and produce waste like animals. We reproduced in the exact same way as other mammals. We have DNA, and in fact share more than 95% of the same DNA as chimps. We may or may not have formed the same way as the rest of the animals, but there is not doubt that God made us animals. Our species is called homosapien.

People eventually accepted that the earth revolves around the sun. Why is this so hard to accept?

Hi Nick,

Within the context of Genesis 1:26, when God says, "Let us make man in our image", he is speaking to the earth for later, 2:7 YHVW says, The Lord God formed the man from the soil of the ground.
So you see, God interacts in the creation of Humanity.

If you notice back in 1:24 Let the land produce living creatures (souls). So we see that God did not have a "hand" in producing living souls, only a voice.

When we look at 1:27 God created humankind in his own image, we know that he made man from the dust of the earth and breathed into his nostrils... Thus, unlike the other living souls (Animals that are made of the earth and breath air), humanity could be considred these divine little dirt clods :lol

Agreed.

In the Chronicles of Narnia, I believe it's "Voyage of the Dawn Treader", Eustace has a conversation with a Star, stars being living creatures. Eustace says,"In our world, stars are flaming balls of gasses." To which the Star replies, "Even in your world, that is only what stars are made of, not what they are."

Living creatures on this planet are all made up of DNA, cells, water, blood and bones, skin and hair. But, that is what we and the animals are made of. God makes us what we are.

a car and a motorcycle have things in common but they are very much different.

Yes, but at heart Jason, their "engines" run on the same principals. What we have in common with all the other animals is that we all come from the earth and we breath air, and when we die, we return to the earth. We are all "Living creatures (souls)"

I think it's silly to say that human's are not animals. From a technical perspective, we are animals, but much, much more than animals in the since that God had an intimate hand in forming us and much much more in the line of responsibility etc.

When God breathed into the nostriles of man, he breathed in two things.

1. Breath life , and man became a living soul

2. The spirit of man

animals do not have the spirit of man

They have a spirit, but not from above. When a person dies, the spirit of man goes up , back to the giver = God

When an animal dies, their spirit goes back down, to the earth.

This "Breath of life" has nothing to do with man becoming a "Living Soul". (Chay Nepech [sp])
I think the point is, that God not only 'formed' us, but he infused himself into all of humanity. This, "Breath of life" is in every single human being that has ever existed and could be looked at as the light that is each human being.

Agreed, Jeff. :thumb

When one looks at the words in the original, we see that the animals are living souls as well. We've had some very lively discussions here at the old forum about whether or not animals will be resurrected as well for new life on the new earth, due to the fact that they are souls just as we are. (We can dig up one of the old discussions if folks want to talk about the fate of animals, rather than derail this thread.)

Humans are the image of God. This doesn't mean that we are not animal in nature, but that God set humans apart from the other animals and infused His image within us.

I think it's silly to say that humans are not animals and I also think it's silly not to recognize that human are far, far above all the other animals. Just as it's true that we share 95% of our DNA with chimpanzees, it's just as true that no chimpanzee has built a building, invented a telephone, painted a masterpiece or won the Superbowl.

We are easily the most intelligent animals on the planet. Sure a chimp hasn't built a building, but they do make and use tools. Koko the gorilla could understand sign language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koko_%28gorilla%29

Happy joy,

What other living soul do you find that is instinctively compelled to worship something percieved as bigger or greater than itself? I have yet to see a shrine set up by a monkey...
