Bible 2.0

Considering how many things in the Bible do not apply to modern life, should there be a new, updated version of the Bible exorcising the parts that are "obsolete".

How many of us do infact wear two different kinds of fabrics simultaneously?

There are 113 commandments (I think that number is accurate) many of which totally conflict with today's modern values and morals. I doubt most Christians would stone their children for being unruly. At least I hope not.

There are so many more do's/not do's afforded us by modern society. Why can't the Bible comment on things like genetic engineering, deforestation, pollution etc.

So what say you to an updated version?

I think the number is 647 commandments in the Bible, or at least says Stephen Fry :D

I don't think there needs to be an updated version, I just think people possibly need to understand how they read the Bible. Without thinking, we instinctively ignore the ones we don't think apply like the ones you've mentioned but how many people take their morality from the Old Testament laws? I certainly don't, I don't think we're expected to either but they are in their for a reason so we must be meant to learn something from it.

The futility of life through the old testament (Bible 1.0) is rectified by the promise of the new testament (Bible 2.0). What we don't need is a third testament (Bible 3.0) when we should be just applying the principles of grace to the particulars of today. Particulars are always changing. It's the principles laid down by Christ which Christians have shared for the past two millennia.

I've moved this thread from the Bible Study Forum to the General Forum since it's really not a study of scripture.

Carry on... :)

It is not our place to rewrite God's word.

I agree, WIP. His Word is timeless and relevant in all ages. Newer versions have changed how it's expressed and the method for translation, but we could never alter what it says.

If someone is searching for specific answers to every one of our issues today, undoubtedly, s/he will not find some things specifically spoken to. If we're taking that approach, I believe we're not taking in His Word as He intends us to. We seek to know Him through His Word. As we come to know Him more, the Word lives within us.

The NT makes no sense apart from the OT and the OT wouldn't make much sense in and of itself if we just started omitting certain parts. Everything is relevant in one way or another, even if it is just to provide continuity in the larger story.

I should add that indirectly the Bible does in fact "comment on things like genetic engineering, deforestation, pollution etc." It has to do with Jesus' followers being good stewards of creation and using the moral understandings found throughout the Bible to help guide us in making moral decisions with regards to modern day issues.
