I voted no.

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary defines a bigot as "a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices" and "one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance." Yeah. People will always have their opinions, but as long as I know my heart is right with God, that's all that matters.

I've been called "Narrow-minded".
Quite frankly I agree that I am very narrow-minded concerning Jesus Christ, the Word of God. All I see "tolerance" doing is dancing around the issue of repentance to embrace social trends. In other words, Christianity without the risk of persecution or Christianity with interpretation through the lens of social standard.

"Love thy neighbor as thyself" isn't support for tolerance but rather a conviction that we are not without sin. Christ loved those who heard him yet He never missed an opportunity to speak to them against sin. He didn't preach tolerance, but repentance, changing one's mind and heart toward the ways of God. "Love thy neighbor as thyself" isn't included in the Ten Commandments yet it's the one command all of us are guilty of not upholding. The sinful nature in this world constantly reminds us of the necessity for the mercy and forgiveness offered to all by our Lord and Savior if we would only believe. For only through Him, who He is and what He has done can our salvation be secured.

God's word is something we are encouraged to follow. What sort of believer would we be not to read the very word we are to live by let alone, what sort of believers would we be if we did not read it?

But if you turn it back on them and call them bigots for being against Christianity...

Seems "bigot" just means someone that doesn't agree with me.

Being a bigot is not solely based on what a person believes. It is how people act according to these beliefs that make them bigots in some cases.

I will get bashed on these thoughts but feel compelled to voice them. Let me give some examples of certain beliefs and how the behaviors I feel that make them bigots.

- You can believe that homosexuality is a sin. If you actively campaign to discriminate against homosexuals or spout hatred towards them you could be a bigot. Instead, if you embrace them and love them as a child of God regardless of their sins you are probably not a bigot.

- You can believe in the Creation account as a literal event. If you overtly state that those who do not are not real Christians and are not saved as a result you could be a bigot. Instead, if you embrace all regardless of these beliefs and allow them to have their personal relationship with Christ while constructively discussing why you feel the Creation account is true you are probably not a bigot.

- You can be an ardent Republican supporter. If you overtly state that anyone who votes Democratic is supporting the killing of millions of babies and will burn in hell as a result then you could be a bigot. Instead, if you discuss and debate the issues and are respectful to those that have different opinions then you are probably not a bigot.

Just my take. Hopefully my examples make sense.

yeah bigotry and intolerance are 2 favorite words to describe Christians. Ironically, those who sling those words around are doing the same thing. Furthermore, accepting truth doesn't make you intolerant (well, I guess technically you're intolerant of falsehood). People see Christians as "intolerant" because of the postmodern and relativistic society we're currently in. The tantrum goes like so: "You don't accept what I believe so you're intolerant!" If you flip that same thing back on them, then YOU'RE the one being rude. We live in a philosophically stupid age.

It would help if you had some examples. I agree with some of your statements, but at the same time I sense a polarization in your words. I've met people that campaing for rights that I want to slap some sense into. I've met those that are so stuck in their own world, that the thought of another point of view is automaticly bad or dissmissed.

Well, Christians like anyone can be downright obnoxious and belligerent. I'm personally not a fan of those standing on street corners, screaming at people through megaphones that they're going to hell - those people aren't reaching anyone w/ the Gospel and are actually doing more harm than good. Not sure if that's what you meant, but I thought I'd clarify my thoughts anyway.

This had best not become a gay debate. :grumpy
What the heck? I didn't say a single think about homosexuals. I have never made a Gay topic. I have never promoted homosexuality, and I am not doing either here. Look, my gayness isn;'t my entire life. I do post on other topics.

I refuse to derail this thread anymore. If you want to talk to me, do it through PM!

I was talking about both sides actually. I've met christians against other Christians, and non Christians against their own. Its quite sad.

It is sad, and it's not Christlike. I experienced bigotry from my own extended family (my kids are bi-racial). I don't think my grandmother ever forgave me for crossing over that white line.
