Bible Study BOOK OF JOB central theme

I believe that the context of that part of Ezekiel is to stress the importance of an individual loyalty to God. Even though Job, Daniel and Noah were good and God considered them friends...their right living was only accredited to them and could not save anybody else from the physical destruction that God was about to dish out. Those three were obviously esteemed by the prophet and God let him know that even if they were alive and living there (which they were not)their relatives, the nation and the land would not be spared from physical judgement.

What do you guys think about the conversation between God and Satan at the beginning of the book?

God allowed Satan to test his faith, even though God never test us. Just as Satan loves to test our faith to try and still it from us as that's the only power Satan has against us is to try and steal our faith.

I have thought of the Book of Job many times in the past. I think that every pastor has to reckon with Job if he is going to be an effective counselor to those who are mourning over the death of a loved one or undergoing terrible circumstances.

I believed for a long time that Job's fear was the problem. Lack of faith in God's protection of loved ones is a real problem....I think it goes in a different direction. Satan goes before God on a regular basis accusing us of being sinful. I think that God got tired of the pomp of Satan boasting of his ability to seduce so many believers that God decided to shut him up. Job was a good example of a man who loved God and did the best that he could in serving God. He knew that Job would not fail to keep his integrity and love for his God. IMO, God wanted to prove to Satan, that not all of His followers could be drawn away from their devotion to Him....just saying.

Job repented.
KJV
Job 42:5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.
Job 42:6 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

The Message
42:5-6 I admit I once lived by rumors of you;
now I have it all firsthand—from my own eyes and ears!
I’m sorry—forgive me. I’ll never do that again, I promise!

Another member pointed out one time, that Job didn't have personal relationship with God. I think he was right.
The word repented in this text doesn't mean Job sinned. There are several scriptures in the bible that says God repented. However we know that God can not sin.

Example:

9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

11 And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

14 And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people. Exodus 32:KJV

I agree, the word repent means "to change ones mind".
So my question could have been worded as, "what did Job change his mind about?"

Job was not engage in willful sin, he lacked understanding.

I quoted these very same verses just this week on another thread. We agree about what repent means. :)

I think the central theme of Job is about mans struggle to grasp who God is and how God interacts with his creation. It is a story about a man who through suffering, draws closer to God in ways that are unique to all of us.

We like to focus on Job and his losses in the first few chapters, but there are over 30 chapters that deal with mans idea of the very nature of God...

Repent is more than to change ones mind. Its about changing ones action. If one is a liar, repentance is shown when one starts telling the truth. If one is a thief, repentance is seen when pone gets a job and gives to the needy. If one kills Christians, repentance is seen when one brings others to Christ.

Read job 40:1 and job 35:1-3 and it becomes clear what Job repents of. In the end, fear transforms into love. Job is an epic struggle of man learning to draw close to God.

I think the central theme of Job would be no matter how good you have been, you will forever have a seperation from god. It is because of God, you are able to have things.

If all of humanity has His spirit within us, how can anyone be separated from him? I believe in Ecclesiastes it says when we die, our bodies return to the dust from where it came and Gods spirit returns to him. It also says that all men have eternity in their hearts.

And of the things we already have... Are they not all gifts from God?

Oh, oops, I forgot about that aspect of his spirit being within us. I think that what I said. "It is because of god, you are able to have things", if god didn't exist, you would never have things, it is because god is loving and gracious enough to give everyone life. It is not the good works that earn you the gifts.

Haha! Good points. Thanks for your in site.

Just finished JOB...Why do you suppose in chapters 38 thru 40 that GOD does not answer any of Job's questions , comfort him in his suffering (although just talking to GOD seems to be a comfort to him), let him in on the conversation with Satan but instead questions him?

I would like to say that I think that it was awesome how God bragged on Job and how at the end He gave back everything that was taken and then some. I also think it was awesome how God decided to actually speak with Job (even though He did not answer any of his questions). I think that Job was an awesome example of trusting God no matter what. I pray that I would never be tested that way but IF I was I could hold onto my faith the way he did.
