Children leaving home

Sometimes children growing up and leaving home is a cause of joy, sometimes not.

Joanna, passing by her son's bedroom, was astonished to see the bed was nicely made, and everything was picked up. Then, she saw an envelope, propped up prominently on the pillow. It was addressed, 'Mum'. With the worst premonition, she opened the envelope and read the letter, with trembling hands…

'Dear, Mum.

It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend, because I wanted to avoid a scene with Dad and you. I've been finding real passion with Stacy, and she is so nice, but I knew you would not approve of her, because of all her piercings, tattoos, her tight Motorcycle clothes, and because she is so much older than I am. But it's not only the passion, Mum. She's pregnant. Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods, and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We'll be growing it for ourselves, and trading it with the other people in the commune, for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS, so Stacy can get better. She sure deserves it!! Don't worry Mum, I'm 15, and I know how to take care of myself. Someday, I'm sure we'll be back to visit, so you can get to know your many grandchildren.

Love Nicholas.

Well, how would you react?

PS: Mum, none of the above is true. I'm over at Jason's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than the school report that's on my desk.

I love you! Call me when it is safe to come home…!!

I think that little letter would support an insanity plea if the parent ended up taking the kid out.

lovely. sadly there a history of dysfunction of poor parenting in my step-family that i had no control off as i wasnt around.

ye saints pray for this.

On the one side it's funny. This little text has been around on the internet for a while.
On the other hand it would be sad if being in love with someone that is in trouble would count as a "worse thing in life". :sad
How would someone with a HIV infection feel when reading that text? :sad

I always thought it was a myth that Germans had no sense of humor ;)

It is a myth. :) My sanity just isn't at its best, so don't consider me a good example for Germans. Or a good example for humankind for that matter. I joke about serious stuff and cry about jokes.

I feel sorry for that fictional drug addicted HIV positive woman. If someone like that existed she would be exactly the kind of person Jesus would love to spend time with. But we only see her as an example for a failed life, something fit to scare your parents. There's something wrong with us.

On that I agree entirely Claudya. There is something wrong with a society that rejects people in trouble.

What on earth is the solution?

In one church I used to go to, we discussed the problem of homeless people sleeping in the church porch. When I suggested the fairly obvious - food, clothes and blankets, the attitude was universally - 'No - that will only encorage more to come'. :shrug Their final solution was to erect a lockable gate to keep people out in the rain. :gah I don't go there any more.

In most cases, there is a reason people get themselves into the situations they get themselves into... It's always good to help people in need with their immediate needs such as food and shelter. But the job of the church goes much deeper than feeding and clothing the poor because if that's all we did, we would simply be enabling them and they would continue to exist in that state.

When Jesus was visiting the prostitutes and other sinners, he brought a message of repentance. Not as a means to say, "Your a no good rotten sinner", but rather, "There is hope. You have been forgiven and now you have a new hope. Now then, live this way because the way your living isn't working out so well is it? Follow me." It's about lifestyle... how we live. It has never been about religion per se. Simply put, talk is cheap. It's about relationships.

I'm always reminded of the woman at the well. Something about that story just resonates with me. We have to stir something in the individual which causes them to want to be better... and I kind of think that's why Jesus always asked of the stricken, "What would you like me to do for you"? They have to want it, but they never will if we constantly push them down and degrade them. Heaven knows their self esteem is already worn out.
