Christian Worship "Rockstars"

okay you haven't read some of the psalms or revalation where that really doesn't make sense.

I've read both, and taken inspiration from them. Yes, they use some of the same metaphors and analogies. Yes, phrases are repeated. But is that the whole of Christian music? Don't we have creative minds where we can draw on our own impressions, rather than the metaphors they used?

musicians are weird. if you want correct theology with music. good luck few songs are perfect. the old hymnals are a far better. but i have caught errors. i understand some of the really blatent bad theology, but remember music isn't teaching!

Why isn't it teaching? Why shouldn't it be?

chanting as i say..

praise ye the lord. stops oh wait bad translation. goes to the jewish bible. praise the Lord. the later is often said but not found in translation with the kjv. with psalms 150. i have both kjv era English renderings of the whole bible and the same for the chumash i have from my grandparents.

messianic jewish music is beautiful but unless you know the bible well. it will not be a good way to draw men in. it can. but jews are rather simple and in depth with their music.

no absolute nothing without scripture. but if one doesn't know what shalom is then you miss what shalom is. i didn't. this song breaks my heart at times.listen to the lyrics and think of my distant kin dying in isreal and here not knowing the lord and jesus crying that he has to judge them!

Freedom in Christ does make you want to fly.. joy unspeakable and full of glory had king David dancing before the Lord with all his might to the point his wife thought he was a loon.. Much of today's music isn't God oriented its flesh oriented.. music..

in general but not all of it. i have been blessed by some of these bands.

Why isn't it teaching? Why shouldn't it be?

I'd have to disagree with that. Maybe doctrine isn't taught in songs (?) but the Lord has put things on my heart through song quite a few times. i will wake up with a song in my head and a message within about current circumstance for me. Not huge things, just a message for my heart in answer to a question.

So far as worship music goes, I do actually find songs by Hillsong, Jesus Culture, and some others to be very worshipful...but that's just me. Some examples would be Lead Me to the Cross, Mighty to Save, Oceans, One Thing Remains, Revelation Song, etc. Some of these are repetitive...a couple are very repetitive. Though, they work for me anyway, what can I say...

It was brought up that some metal bands have theologically deep lyrics, and that's true.

I listen to almost all genres, actually, most of the songs I typically listen to by Christian bands. I'm kinda known on here for listening to hard rock and some metal, but it's not all I listen to.

I grew up a rock and roller, graduated to heavy metal but as I get older I find myself deleting more and more of the secular music to make room for worship music. I'm not a big fan of repetitiveness usually, but that one song, "Awesome God" While it is repetitive (has only one verse in the whole song which gets repeated...it's awesome and I do not tire of it.

:rocking

There's a (somewhat) local station similar to that that my mom listens to. The music style personally doesn't appeal to me, I'm just not a fan of country, be it modern or old style (like Southern gospel). It's probably the only genre I don't listen to at all. But my mom loves Southern gospel.
Traditional music wise, I prefer piano. I also play piano, including hymns, classical pieces, and lead sheets (which are arranged differently than hymnal music). Hymns are actually one of the trickier things to play as written because of how the notes are arranged.

I am truly glad for all the different bands my self. Just as there are so many different type of people in this world we need different types of music. Just because it does not work for me does not mean it wont work for some one else.
I agree with you guys that there is alot of music that you can hardly tell the difference between secular and Christian but those songs still dont have all the filth and lead you down a wrong path.

I was a true rocker and a drummer before I got saved and I am greatful for all the different shades of Christian rock that I can listen to through out the day when simply doing things such as working on a car or what have you BUT I rejoice in the fact that there are so many wonderful worship bands or bands that have made wonderful worship songs and cd's and here is my plug for a band....))) PETRA (((
Have a wonderful and blessed week
Jim

i love the fact that for a lot of you, what is important in music, beyond aesthetics, is more than just whether the artist self-identifies as Christian, or is associated with a label that promotes itself as Christian, but whether the lyrics themselves are theologically sound and profitable for edification and grounding in the truth.

What would be truly epic is if someone did a really good rock rendition of the Nicene Creed. Newsboys' "We Believe" is the only one that I know of that comes close.

here you go, by Divine Symphony, a symphonic unblack metal band from Brazil (one sometimes finds God working in the most unexpected places, yes?):

lyrics:

A time marked by the end of the persecutions that
Honored many men and women and went beyond the limits
Of all human possibilities putting history in favor
Of the saints that the lord Jesus Christ set up on Earth

These giants aren't to be worshiped but
Respect as brother and sisters for the
Contribution they've made and for being
Examples of life and by their profession, profession of faith

We believe in the almighty God, creator of all things
And in the Lord Jesus Christ, the son of God
The only begotten of the father, God of God, light of light,
He being of the same substance and essence of God

The giants have fought against all the heresies that have existed
Such as Arian theories which went against the Nicene creed

We believe that by him all things were made, including all of the things
In the heavens as well as those on Earth, who for us and our salvation,
Came down from Heaven in the flesh, arose from the dead on the third day
And will return to judge the living and the dead

Everybody tried to stifle the Christians' faith
Because nobody wants to change their evil lives

But none of these can thwart God's plans for humanity
For God chose the lowly people of the world
And the people that are despised and the people who are nothing
So that he can put to shame the ones who are

In this way, these true Christians' battles in the Lord
Has made them as giants because their faith was like fire
And that with their lives or with their deaths these giants
Supported God's mission on Earth without any fear

These giants were Christ's soldiers, brave men that walked
In the truth way they were approved to God by great their faith.

We believe in the almighty God, creator of all things
And in the Lord Jesus Christ, the son of God
The only begotten of the father, God of God, light of light,
He being of the same substance and essence of God

secular radio doesn't play the best or most talented musicians, but what is most palatable and agreeable to the masses.

it's no different with Christian radio -- what's popular and most often aired is what's least likely to offend and most likely to be generally accepted by the largest segment of the potential audience.

if you are looking for substance rather than style, in either case you have to look beyond popular culture and sift through the 'underground' for such treasures.
