christmas

:p :lol

Maybe we should have a thread dedicated to all the things that Christians tell others they shouldn't do even though the Bible doesn't specifically address the issue.

Christians shouldn't listen to rock music.
Christians shouldn't smoke cigarettes.
Christians shouldn't dress their kids in funny costumes and extort candy from the neighbors.
Christians shouldn't have too expensive a car.
Christians shouldn't shop at Wal-Marts.
Christians shouldn't send their kids to public schools.
Christians shouldn't drink alcohol.
Christians shouldn't say "darn" or "golly".
Christians shouldn't watch movies.
Christians shouldn't watch Oprah.
Christians shouldn't do yoga.
Christians shouldn't be Democrats.
Christians shouldn't vote.
Christians shouldn't drink caffeinated beverages.
Christians shouldn't create sculptures or paintings of people or animals.
Christians shouldn't worship on Sunday.
Christians shouldn't worship on Saturday.

And let's not forget...Christians shouldn't judge others!
Oh wait, that one is actually a commandment. :chin

;)

And the can of worms has been opened...

This could potentially turn into the most insane thread ever. :D

being the grinch at the moment.

Christians shouldnt celebrate the pagan yule tide holiday!

Being something of a Grinch myself (well, more of a Scooge, really), I agree.

The LORD your God will cut off before you the nations you are about to invade and dispossess. But when you have driven them out and settled in their land, and after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not to be ensnared by inquiring about their gods, saying, “How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same.†You must not worship the LORD your God in their way (Deu. 12:29-31 NIV)

People say that they aren't worshipping Pagan gods when they celebrate Christmas, but are doing it for the Lord. But that is exactly what this verse and others prohibit. We are not to take Pagan practices and rituals and say we're doing them for God.

That being said, there's one thing we mustn't forget. Some people, like myself, feel that Christmas is Pagan and that Christians should avoid it, while others feel that it is our hearts that matter rather than the origins of the festival. Whichever way we feel, we must keep in mind that this isn't an issue that determines a person's salvation. We shouldn't judge those that do things differently than we do. I believe Christmas, Easter and other holidays are Pagan and I don't celebrate them, but I don't judge those that do. For most of my life, I have celebrated these festivals, so I'm in no position to condemn others over it. Those who celebrate these festivals, remember that those of us who don't are your brothers and sisters in Christ. Let's all try to respect each other's views and keep from arguing about it. (A "heated" discussion is another matter, though.)

i do actually celebrate it, as my wife wants too, but if i had my way, nope.

she has grandkids and i was a jw so christmas means little to me in the sense that its a really christian holiday.

my wife felt my childhood was robbed, ironically i got more gifts from my grandparent who sent them on channukah.

So am I.

And, I'm not forgetting that the thread is about Christmas.

Theo, I do respect your attitude. :nod

dora, of all here. you know me that i am the least legalistic.

i dont call those that celebrate christmas unsaved.

but i do see that christmas is so far from what is actually christ and what he said about loving another. we should be doing that already and dont need a babylonian idol to remind us.lol poke poke.

:poke Right back at ya, Cranman!

Y'all know me...I'm a big believer in Christian liberty and think that for the most part, anything not specified by the whole of Biblical teaching (a certain verse here or text there notwithstanding) is OK. To the pure, all things are pure, to apply a "certain verse" to the subject.

Unless, and this is what is very important, unless the individual feels under conviction about something. If one feels they ought not do any of these things, then one shouldn't do it.

What I have a problem with, and I have a very big problem with it, is when Christians judge and rebuke others in what should be personal decisions. As it states in Romans 14:4 "Who are you to judge the servant of another?"

So, I respect it when a brother or sister in the Lord gives an articulate and thoughtful reason why celebrating Christmas or being a soldier is something they cannot do in good conscience.

I tend to push back though when a brother or sister in the Lord starts telling me that I am practicing paganism if I put gifts for my kids under a decorated tree on December 25 or that I'm practicing idol worship if I have a crucifix. Because that's when someone crosses over from expressing a conviction of their own heart to judging what they think is going on in my heart.

some tend forget that others have liberty where others dont.

on soldiering those who cant seem to think that bible mentions that. it doesnt.

i can take verses to defend my position on tv these days and also christmas but do realise that others are free to watch tv and celebrate christmas.

Believe it or not, I have personal convictions as well that I hold to and would consider it sin if I didn't.

i figured that you did.

of course for me if i did a thread on why we shouldn listen to secular music that would be an interesting one as i for the life of me cant figure how some listen to say katy perry or black eye peas. and also linkin park and others and it doesnt phase them.

and of course enimamen.

Christians can celebrate at Christmas, even though it is not a biblical holiday.
Just like we celebrate 4th of July, even though it is not a biblical holiday.

Have fun, eat good, and enjoy your family!!!!

:fencing:christmas:rollingpin We got ya covered, Santa!!!!:lol

My sentiments exactly!!!

My honest heartfelt opinion about Christmas being a pagan holiday is this: If I were to not celebrate Christmas because it was, years in the past, a pagan holiday, I would be engaging in superstition. Now, if I don't celebrate it because I'm a grumpy grinch like Jason, OK. Or, if I chose not to celebrate it because of the commercialism or because it's a waste of money, OK. But, I couldn't not celebrate it because of the pagan roots, because to me, that is just superstition, plain and simple and I don't believe that as a Christian I should be superstitious about things.

For me, Christmas is just like what Sissy says, a very American type of holiday with some cultural things thrown in that is a fun time for presents, family and good food. Nothing more.

:lol Hoo boy, brother, we are so not on the same page. Don't like Katy Perry, but I like the Peas and Linkin Park and of course Eminen. As well as Metallica and even some Poison. Not all of any of these artists stuff, but some of all of them...if that makes sense.

We all bring our own past and background to things. Some who were steeped into the sex, drugs and rock-n-roll scene most likely needs to stay away from certain kinds of music and things. But, when many of my peers were disco dancing and doing the s/d/r-n-r, I was deep into a cult and was living a very legalistic life of do not taste, do not touch, do not handle. However, even though I wasn't engaging in sex, taking drugs or being influenced by rock-n-roll, I was caught up in something every bit as, if not even more, sinfully destructive.

I think the Holy Spirit works in each of us to convict us where we are at our weakest. This would explain why perhaps Jason cannot listen to Linkin Park and yet eat a big breakfast before church on Sunday mornings, but I can and yet cannot. Different backgrounds, differing areas of conviction.
