church/ christian myths

Guest
i thought I might start this thread because recently it was revealed to me some Christians have superstitions and believe some myths that propagate in churches. Have your say...

Like this:

When asked many people believe we only use 10% of our brain..MYTH....we use it all all the time!

Everything unfortunate or I don't understand is 100% demonic (cant some things come from God?) or just be natural human things?

The idea here is if we bring to light misconceptions then we wont be tempted to correct brothers and sisters with myths, or offer them as sound advice. This is not a thread for bashing Christianity but hopefully one of being educated in misconceptions. It would be preferred if Christians post here only for helping each other with understanding some of these.

raise up the child in the way he shall go and when he is old he shall not depart from it.

that doenst mean that the child even though raised in a christian home will become a born agian person.

if you think that through you cant make a child a christian they must choose it.

I believe a human being consist of more than just flesh - it has a soul - flesh relies on food to thrive but we cannot live by that alone we NEED God - so no nothing is 100% human - without God we're in hell ...

Since it's almost that time of year again, there are a few myths surrounding Christmas. All of these can be easily debunked simply by reading the Bible and using common sense.

  • Jesus was born in December (Shepherds don't keep their flocks outside at night in winter - see Luke 2:8)
  • There were three wise guys... er... I mean wise men (The Bible doesn't say how many there were, but 3 men travelling across the desert would be easy pray for robbers.)
  • The wise men were named Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar (The Bible doesn't tell us their names)
  • The wise men came to the manger on the same night as the shepherds (They came to a house much later - see Matt. 2:11)

There are more, but many of them are more subjective than these.

that 'God works in mysterious ways' was never said in the Bible which was a surprise to me when I found out ...

There were not two of every kind of animal on the the ark. There were actually 4 of each kind of unclean animal and 14 of each kind of clean animal.

Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. (Gen. 7:2 KJV)

Since they are paired, "by sevens" can only mean seven pairs of each. The wording is the same for the unclean animals, so it must man two pairs of each.

'christian home' is a very broad statement.

I always wondered why they left the slaughtering of the innocent children out of the christmas story. It's just as important. (ok I don't, but it annoys me.)

And they slaughtered the boys under two because that's how old jesus could have been at the time - because the star appeared AND SO they set out. It didn't appear and then he was born. So they were travelling for a while before arriving at the house (as you said) where they were all living.
Jewish tradition claims that there were ten wise men apparently. I think another reason for the 3 myth was the fact that they brought 3 different kinds of presents, but also apparently, gold, frankincense and myrrh were traditional gifts presented to a king or ruler because of their preciousness and purity.

more myths.

God loves everyone (bible doesn't say that)

Everyone gets an equal reward in heaven (bible doesn't say that)

The typical view of heaven and hell (could write a whole book on that one)

Getting 'saved' means eternity with God regardless.

Anyone can get 'saved' by attending church and saying the right words. (and/or right prayers)

The church has always been right (because it's the church.)

The church is God.

Pastors represent God so if you disobey them, you're disobeying God.

If a church excommunicates you, God has too.

God likes men more then women.

God always has.

Women are not important as men. God made it that way.

Sexual sin if the person is a christian, cannot be forgiven (or incredibly begrudgingly.)

Cultural christianity will save you.

You cannot be saved without obeying human beings. They say so.

If the world became christian as we know it, earth would look like heaven. People would be nice. As well as fake, controlled, repressed and boring.

Just like heaven.

This is fun.

God wants you to be a nice version of the world. Whatever world you live in is good enough as long as you're still a nice version of it. Basically

God likes you. He doesn't like other people however, which is why he's sending them to hell.

God loves you. And repeat above.

You'd better love God back or you're in big trouble.

Christians are gutless.

It's wrong to be angry. Or passionate. Or to hate. Anything.

Regardless.

It doesn't matter because they're all going to hell anyway.

And we wonder why the world hasn't been saved yet. :lol

It's ok to let other people interpret the bible for you through their denominations ideas. Even though all the main denominations disagree with each other (which is why they exist in the first place.)

Obeying them will get you to heaven anyway. Because........well, because......

God is good. So good, that he sent his only son to die for you (but not anyone who he forgets or couldn't be bothered to save.)

(and yes God is good, but can anyone still see anything wrong with this picture.)

It's ok for denominations to fight with each other because christian leaders should have that kind of power. The power of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people who will do what they say, regardless of what the bible says. If the leader can convince the people to listen to them first, over God. (Or they'll go to hell.)

Oh look, the catholic church.

Christianity will solve all the worlds problems. As it stands today.

Life is good, when you're a christian. And should always be. Because God loves you. To admit it isn't, is to deny Gods power. (Or to cast doubt on the depth of your faith.)

If you doubt or question God you are risking your salvation. Because he really is that mean. To question his unfairness to others will be to risk him treating you the same way. Denial is much easier.

Truth is good, but we can ignore it to save our own skin. God likes that attitude.

Ok, I'd better not go on. But ignorance isn't bliss. I know that the only way that so many people stay faithful to God and lead genuine, faith filled existences is because they find God and his true nature despite these myths. And thats what keeps them strong. God is good, and because his nature doesn't change, people can always run back to that and be safe, regardless.

That Jesus stands outside the door of your heart and politely knocks to be let in...and if you let Him in, you're saved.

.

Oh my ghosh ... this looks like a Christianity bashing thread.

I almost thought you guys are Muslims, Atheists .... or something !

here is why i started this to clear up commonly perpetuated myths. As a responsible believer Isn't it important to live in reality, and not attempt to correct a brother/sister with a myth. Just because its perpetuated doesn't make it correct.

Here is my personal favorite "Just in the same way we only use 10 % of our brains (here is my point being validated by the first statement)" LOL look how often you see that appear on message boards :)
Some people wrote some good things above.

one more comes to mind-

Mattew 18:20 "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." (refers to conflict resolution solution) gets misquoted so often. ( not example of myth just misquote example)

Tina does have a point in that with no specific point of inquiry or direction and no main point of this thread this could quickly turn into an unedifying discussion. Would the author of the thread like to direct their inquiry more specifically to ask something about a commonly held conception that may be directly addressed?

P.S. If one would like to discuss misconceptions surrounding Christmas traditions there is already an existing thread on the topic if you search for it.

sure friend I did above What the purpose of it is is to bring to light misconceptions. repeating things because you heard it off someone else is not as wise as proper understanding. I didnt post this to undermine our christian faith but to use it to bring to light misconceptions so we dont unknowingly make someone accountable to them in the form of advice.

Okay, but are you just wondering what some of them are, or do you have specific examples in mind that you would like to discuss?

God Bless,

'christian home' is a very broad statement.

does god overide the human will? does he make us serve him? even he had to let adam fall. yet surely you wont argue that the lord didnt show himself to adam and had a relationship with him.

So: There is the Rev. 17:1-5 myth that these unclean animal's (+) were so when the Jew came on board, huh! That mankind can eat whatever he Gen. 4:7 DESIRES!:screwloose Whatever, these ones are what they eat! + 'smoke'.

Oh.. and that was even before the flood!

If, despite what the bible says about joy being one of the fruits of the spirit, you're feeling miserable, it's Satan lying to you through your feelings.

The thing about "myths" is that a person considers what they do not believe a 'myth'. And even if someone can tell them the difference, they still think that because something is wrong in their eyes then its a myth.

For instance:

I find the Bible directly speaking to the fact that 'we' are a soul that lives in a body. But never the less, many times you will hear it said that we have a soul, not that we are 'the' soul. In fact, not that I am trying to bash anyone here, but it was said earlier by someone on this thread.

Point being. They think one thing, we think another. A myth is simple something someone deems as untrue. Even the word has dissimilar meanings based on context.

Hey, not saying its a bad thread, but all it can boil down to a bunch of opinions, and end up in arguments. Just look at all the thread topics with the word "myth" in the A&T forum. lol.
