Church Services

Is not waiting in line at the restaurant that important? :) :eyebrow
It depends on why I’m waiting. If I am waiting because the speaker is in love with the sound of his own voice and can’t stop talking, then I’d rather not wait. How about you?

i have been to 3 to 4 hr sunday services. That was the norm. 1.5 hrs of worship and the rest was preaching. I had to go to another church as i work seven days a week. I couldnt stay awake for all that time.

I prefer services no long than an hour and fifteen minutes. I suspect you start losing members if you try to stretch your services longer than that.

i agree unless its a revival. Of course that church i mentioned was pentacostal and primarily black and white mix. The ratio and 60% to 40%.

How long should church services be?
As long as it needs to be to worship God and build each other up. In our church the services are about 1hr 15min and it suits just fine. We get a 35-45 minute talk in, 4 songs, prayer, bible reading and other things like interviews etc.

I went to a pentacostal church many years back, and I get the feeling that these types of churches can run for a lot longer and have a lot more music.
But I don't see how the black:white ratio has anything to do with it.

When I visited Kazakhstan earlier this year, I went to a Russian Baptist church and their services were about 3 hours... but they don't meet back Sunday evening. Their service was wonderful! It consisted of much worship (very reserved worship), poetry reading, special music, and 3 sermons by church brethren. I didn't mind the length of that service because it was so meaningful, but if I had to sit for hours listening to someone simply because they couldn't wrap up their thoughts that would be different.

Black people tend to like longwinded church services and so do most pentacostals. That church had a five to ten minute worship song. Psalm 103 was the verse it was based upon. The average length of the songs there is 4 minutes. At least 10 songs were played then specials and so on.

Most chruches in my hometown dont mix. They are either all black, white or hispanic. I was stated that to show that it was a mix church and that some should know that black people worship longer and more charismatically as a tendency. I was raised in the pentacostal doctrine. I have been drunk in the spirit, spoken in toungues and interpreted.I have also layed hands on fellow believers in order tha they might recieve the holy spirit. I have a very strong pentacostal background and i'm not the only moderator here who has that background. This church i mentioned was for many yrs and probably still the only church of mixed people.

How about short meaningful songs and a short powerful sermon that cause you not to mind the ammount of time we spend at church? I wouldn't mind the length so much if there wasn't so little effort it seems in worshiping God sometimes.

:) That's why I asked the question.

Sadly, I think that far too many people today think that worship is just song and only song. As a matter of fact, I've even seen some folks, a fairly large number at that, think that worship is a certain type of song, which is for some reason differentiated from a "praise" song. It has saddened me to see churches split over the issue of "worship" when "worship" is being defined as a type of music.

In fact, when God's people gather together to take communion, to sing hymns and spiritual songs, to partake in God's word together via reading and the preaching of it, to gather together funds to help others in need and pay common bills, it's ALL worship.

How long does it need to last? I think that is up to individual congregations. It's not worship if everyone there is just getting emotionally whipped up by certain types of songs, nor is it worship for a pastor to drone on and on just because he can't clearly and concisely teach the word of God. But any and all of these things, when done for the glory and adoration of God, constitutes worship and true worship could go on forever and not seem burdensome.

However, I do understand that a lot of churches like to wrap up the worship service by noon, so that the pot roasts don't burn or the folks can get to Golden Coral before the line is too long.

I agree Dora. Any form of putting one's needs aside to do God's work or just glorify, pray and meditate on His words is worship.

1 1/2-2 hours is fine with me.
