Closet Christian Rock Bands?

Black Sabbath did a song called "Heaven and Hell".... I liked one of the lines from this song: "The devil is never a maker, the less that you give, he's a taker". That certainly is true....

I've got to side with Mike on this. There were a lot of back and forth posts.... But we shouldn't be fooled. It seems to me that bands like Ozzy and Black Sabbath were using the popularity of the occult and Satanism as a gimmick to make money. I don't believe Christian bands should make money on God's name either (In fact, I think in some ways that's worse), but even if they come up with some songs that seem to be Christian based we gotta keep in mind that even on the surface, they are glorifying Satan.

To boot, they don't come off as being too knowledgable about the Bible IMO... That Iron Maiden song "666" is a prime example.

Edward:

You mean like, wholesome hard rock performed by Christians can plants seeds to stir the conscience of non-Christians and encourage Christian hard rock enthusiasts to keep pursuing this style and manner of witness?

Some of the Christian heavy metal lyrics is rather bold, in any case.

Blessings.

yeah I think so. Sort of a reverse psychology thing. Sort of how at times you want to make a point to someone, but can't come right out and say it or they would reject it and not listen. SO you lead them into it from a different angle and after you have them agreeing with you in your roundabout way...then you make your point. Some people you have to make them think for their self first.

I have a friend whom I asked if he prays once and he said no I don't sit and insanely talk to myself with no one there. Then later when we was watching Ancient Aliens he started to explain to me that the show is right inasmuch as God is an Alien to this earth and an extra-terrestrial because he not from this earth and people just don't get it, that their watching us and always have been. So I asked him well so which one of those old Egyptian Gods is really God? Marduke? Isis? So he says no, it's the God from the Bible. And I said so you believe that there is only the one true God? Yes he said. So I said so why wont you pray to him? He gave me the funniest look, as if it just clicked for him. He has always rejected Christianity on the notion that they are a bunch of bible thumping do gooders who tell you what to do and not do. Thanks to Ancient Aliens and his interest in it, I am now able to start getting him to talk long enough about it to understand that it is a one on one relationship with God that begins in prayer. Music is being used in the same way to reach certain previously unreachable crowds. from an angle. At their party on saturday night since they wont go to church on sunday.

Musicians do capitalize on the image to sell music. I watched an interview with (born again) Alice Cooper and he told how he had threw a dead chicken into the audience at a show once, or kicked it off the stage or something like that. It was on the stage presumably thrown up by an audience member or something. The crowd ripped it apart and threw the head back up onstage. Somehow it got twisted around and made the papers that he killed it or bit it's head off or something and hit the papers. He was going to issue a statement refuting it, but his agent said why? People love it. So while he didn't admit it, he didn't deny it and it helped ticket and record sales, and that's where he got the idea to embrace that image just for sales sake.

...as long as it doesn't involve alcohol, leading to condoms.

It's far preferable for an event to be clean and organized by Christians with Christian music, I would submit.

But yes it's nice for Christians to hear or perform some wholesome hard rock, etc.

Blessings.

Absolutely agree. I am talking about non-believers though. They'll listen to most music in their preferred genre, or if recommended by even a single friend as long as it has a good beat. They don't even have to be able to (consciously) understand the words. One reason we as believers should be careful what we listen to or sing along with. It might be satanic.

PS:
I have nothing against Christian hard rock bands and why would I as they are a great witness to the youth of today. I might not know the words they scream, but the youth can tell you every word that are in the lyrics..

for his glory:

The hard rock aesthetic is something that many Christian young people identify with strongly and if it is harnessed in a clean and wholesome way by Christian rock bands and events this can be an opening for testimony to many young people - and others.

Blessings.

Edward: You mean, if they hear some God honoring words, with an engaging tune, they may later remember the words, which may prove to be a blessing?

You may be right about that, though it wasn't what I had in mind when I posted that. I meant more along the lines of their subconscious picking up on it.

Edward: Well, I see, okay. I guess that if it's going to be a blessing, eventually, the meaning of the words in the memory and the unconscious needs to find its way to the understanding and consciousness.

Kind of what Paul says when he speaks of 'sing(ing) with the understanding also' (1 Corinthians 14.15).

Blessings.

That's interesting, and makes me think of my new church. I have such a hard time singing in church. They have very good lyrics which praise God and give voice to Jesus gift to us and every single time I try to sing with them, the Spirit come over me and I start shedding tears. I haven't been able to make it through a whole song yet. It's a little embarrassing. Everyone is praising God and having a good time and I'm standing there losing it crying.

Well, don't get me wrong, there is some disagreement between us on the issue of music as this does come up sometimes. But she doesn't consider it a major issue, and she does seem to be much more open to it than she used to be.

PS: questdriven:

Another thought I had was that to some extent it's going to be inevitable and even natural that people are going to have their differences in preferences about music styles. It's just the way it is.

The main thing is for people's different preferences not to disturb (I mean metaphorically rather than sonically, but I guess they are related) domestic peace.

Blessings.

It's not a preference. She thinks there may be actual problems with certain types of music--that some genres of music may be inherently bad.

questdriven:

Because for example I think you really like the style of the chorus from Red, Release the Panic, which I've now listened to: the sound of:

'Let it out, Let it out, Release the Panic Oh release the Panic, Get it out, Get it out, Get it out, Release the Panic, Oh Release the Panic.'

Style-wise, it's mainline hard rock and even at the screamo end of it, I think, and you really like it. Don't you?

Blessings.

Yeah.

She's not as strong about it as she used to be, but she still thinks that maybe the music isn't good.

She must have changed her mind, anyway, about hard rock, because she's now already bought you Skillet, which can be pretty hard rock. Blessings.

I definitely like hard rock and some metal. But a lot depends on my mood. If yòu haven't heard Phil Keaggy, check him out on U Tube. I have seen him in concert, too, and he is an amazing guitarist. His harder stuff is outstanding. Try Strings Attached by Glass Harp.

Carolyn: I think it can be definitely worthwhile for Christians to make an effort to get to like and appreciate something of the rigor and nuances of Christian hard rock and heavy metal. Keeping the testimony potential in mind with young people, for instance.

Blessings.
