Confusion about what the scriptures say about the condition of the dead?

That's exactly right!

Jesus went to paradise, the place of the departed spirits where all await (bad and good) for the final judgment...

The Thief is in the bosom of Abraham, where Jesus went and told him He would see him there...

Came back 3 days later, abode on earth 40 days, then went to heaven awaiting the command of God to take the blessed to glory!

Silly me, I thought Christ died for sinners. In reality all He did was shed a husk called a body, but HE did not really die?

God formed us from the dust of the ground and breathed life into us and we became a living soul for when we physically die and return to the dust of the ground our soul goes back to God waiting for Gods final judgement as we who are in Christ sleep in the ground until the coming of the Lord and will rise to meet him in the air as we will be with the Lord forever as this is the first resurrection as the second resurrection are those who have died not having Christ and will face Gods white throne judgement and will be damned for eternity as they separated themselves from the Lord.

1 Thessalonian 4:
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Genesis 35:18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.

Ezekiel 18:
4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,

6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,

7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,

9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

Revelation 20:
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

Surely you can come up with something better than that!

the Son of Man died a horrible death for you and me and returned to his spiritual kingdom watching over us and awaiting the command of the Father to come and get the blessed...

Yes, Sleep and Dead are the same thing, there is much encouragement in the Bible for those who lost loved ones that the body being dead, their spirit is alive, and will be reunited with the Lord (the blessed that is) on the day of his coming...

Actually, what you said was that instead of dying, He was somewhere else (you called it paradise). What actually happened was that Christ died a horrible death we cannot even imagine. Was stone cold dead. Paid the price for all sin so that we (sinners) don't have to die but rather, can be given eternal life.

You portray this as an event in which He shed a mortal body, but He, Himself did not actually die. He actually died.

His body died, his spirit departed:

John 19:30 (KJV)
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost ("ghost" Greek "pneuma" Spirit) .
