Guys, This ol computer is moving slow.. It is windows XP I dont do much on it.. I play a couple games ( as in cards or word games) have a few pictures use out look express for email... would popping in some memory help?

Went to defrag and i have %73 free space

How long have you had the computer and when was the last time you have done any maintenance on it (defrag, clear the recycle bin, uninstall unnecessary programs, etc.)?

in my experience, it is usually either the lack of maintenance or malware that is slowing down the computer.

Any antivirus? The reason why I'm asking is because if most users, possibly including you, don't change their computer habit, slapping on bigger memory is a short term solution. Likely, when you got your computer, it was plenty fast?

Try to focus on improving your maintenance. Remove any programs that you just do not use anymore. Check out Ccleaner for help in clearing out a lot of unnecessary files in cache and temp folders. Avoid registry fixer unless you have specific issues with the registry. Etc...

My particular solution for myself is to simply wipe and reinstall windows. This give me a blank slate and help me keep from mucking up the computer's processes.

Basically, the solution is to tweak your habit just slightly from now.

If you have outlook as your mail program, installing memory will definatly help if you leave outlook open(like I do) outlook is a MASSIVE memory hog(to see for yourself bring up a task manager click on processes then click on image name to sort alpha. and then find outlook and be amazed at the memory that thing needs just to run)

You guys are talking geek to this ol gal....can you put your thoughts into the most basic....

NO! LOL allowed got that?

I know how to go to the remove programs place and remove programs but i dont know which ones to remove.... Some are easy to see others are not. Some tell ya they are running here or there etc.

What is registry?

simply wipe and reinstall windows
I understand what you are saying but how? EXACTLY how?
o see for yourself bring up a task manager click on processes then click on image name to sort alpha.
good grief is this star wars? Can you put that simpler?
Guys Thanks..Thanks a lot.....:yes i am trying to learn

Reba being Xp I will assume your computer is a few years old and probably has had that install of xp on it there a while.

Windows has a tendancy of accumulating junk into the operating system and slowing down as you use it. It requires a lot of maintenance as it is affected by so many variables.

If it is an old install you will gain a great deal by saving all your important info on your computer to an external hard drive and erasing your current windows installation and replacing it with either your existing xp disk or a newer version of windows. Doing this will improve things a LOT!

Having someone tech savvy would be handy for this.

If all yo do in it is web browse I wouldn't waste your money on windows again I would use one of those great new Linux distributions.

Linux wont t get viruses and malware like windows does all the programs are free out of its software store and there was lots of them . I installed it on my mac a week ago and I was very impressed with it.

It will make your computer seem to run faster too because it it wont be as memory hungry as windows is.. and it is free.

Get a mac or go linux Tim is right.
over the next few years of painless trouble free computing you with thank us. (especially if its a mac they are virtually no maintenance and idiot proof simple to use)

I tend to focus on the most money saving method to do thing and Linux is definitely the way to do that. Be aware that some version of Linux can be confusing so ignore all that and try Ubuntu version.

If you go to Ubuntu site, you can actually download something called Wubi which is one of THE easiest way to install Ubuntu While preserving the rest of your windows files. So you can still keep your window and test drive Ubuntu this way. You will be able to choose whether to go into Ubuntu or windows when the computer start up. It's a good way to test the water and see how well Linux works for you.

I am curious about how much free space you have on your hard drive? Ubuntu generally don't need that much space on the hard drive to run from and for the test drive period, you might want to keep the size allocated for Ubuntu a little small, like 15GB.

I thought you were starting to sound a bit like me. :lol

Seriously Reba, we're not trying to pull your chain, here. Linux is really easy to install and use. Most people switching over to it wondered why they paid for Microsoft, and then took years of abuse by Microsoft. I'd be embarrassed to promote an OS like they have with so many nuances. Here's a popular version of Linux, but there's others.

I trust ya Tim...

Well i removed a lot of photos from outlook and gained %4 more free space...

Tried a couple other ideas and i cant follow through for some reason the directions and my computer aren't the same.

Defraging helped but i shouldnt' have to defrag every day :sad

I am just plain ol scared of the change Tim i know its dumb but i have to wing this stuff on my own... and change is scary.... who will fix if i miss up big time??

the first day i owned a computer My son said go for mom you cant hurt it click around and learn the thing your not dumb,,,, about a halve hour later i called him jr the dumb thing is stuck and its all blue....

Thanks Jman

Well reading back i found this...

so i guess that answers a couple questions...

I'm surprised and disappoined that no one has said the right thing. Where are the gurus?:sad:sad

Give the system a blow at the back to revive it. Don't you have pestle in your kitchen?

Reba,

The Wubi option is your best bet. This way, you won't be hassled by having to "burn' the ISO file to a blank CD or DVD. (that is the image file supplied by a standard Ubuntu installation)

Since Ununtu 12.04 (the version Tim linked to) is still in it's Beta testing stage, the Wubi will most likely want to install the latest, official release, which is 11.10.

That's fine. It will have the same look and feel as 12.04. Ubuntu releases two operating systems; every two years, they release a version with the letters LTS at the end of the version's name. LTS stands for, Long Term Support.

So since I've been using it, they've released 8.04 LTS, 10.04 LTS and the soon to be released official 12.06 LTS.

They also release intermediate releases in between their LTS series. 7x, 9x, 11x, etc. 11.10 is one of them. I'm lazy, so I opt for the LTS because I am insured of support for at least two years or longer.

When 12.04 LTS is officially released this April (hence the .04) you can probably download it and do an upgrade of your 11.10 OS.

Here is the link for the Wubi:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide?action=show&redirect=Wubi

Read it in it's entirety before you click on the Ubuntu Windows Installer Download page.

As shown in that link, Ubuntu will install an option that lets you choose which OS to boot into. So, if you don't like Ubuntu :chin you will always have the option to boot back into Windows.

As far as it looking like Windows, well, it really doesn't. It looks better and can be fully customised. :) But there are downloads available to make look like the Windows version of your choice.

My opinion is, get used to the new look and feel of Ubuntu. It's fast and much more secure.

... and did anyone mention most of the software is either pre-installed or free? :thumbsup
