Cult of personality for Stalin is alive in Russia.

The 70th anniversary of the German attack on the Soviet Union was on June 21. On that occasion I visited many Russian websites. What a surprise to find that both communists and anticommunists glorify Stalin in today's Russia.

Communists remember him as a great Marxist ideologist, as Lenin's partner, as a leader responsible for collectivization of agriculture, for rapid industrialization, and for merciless destruction of traitors, especially within the communist party and the military, in the late 1930's. Briefly, they glorify him as the leader of the Soviet proletarian dictatorship, and as a military genius responsible for the Soviet victory over fascism.

The anticommunists also claim that Stalin was responsible for the Soviet victory over fascism. But they totally ignore his communist ideology, and the brutality he used to impose obedience. Logically, the attitude toward Stalinism should divide communists and anticommunists. But in reality it seems to unite them. How can this be explained?

And this is not the only puzzle. As some of you probably remember, I wrote a memoir about life in the Soviet Union during the first year of the war. It can be seen at

Thinking about the approaching 70th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War--that is how Russians refer to their experience during WWII--I sent the above link to perhaps as many as 20 editors of Russian newspapers, giving them permission to translate and publish my memoir. Not a single one responded. How can this be explained?

Thanks for this information. Do you know of any stories of Christians that lived under Communism in the Soviet Union? It would be great to hear some.

I vaguely remember a quote I read a long time ago, but I searched for it, and I can't find it. It was from a Russian leader who talked about sitting patiently and allowing the West to rebuild their country for them so that they one day can turn the tables. I believe this was from the early 20th century. I've read that this is built into their psyche. For that reason, I have never trusted the Soviet government even as Gorby was at the helm. I suspect when the time is right, they will once again rise up and exert their influence.

Do you know the quote I'm thinking about?

It is my personal mission now mike to find you that quote asap lol. But indeed I believe that russia is in control tho more then ever look at us no space program and russia is offering to give us lifts for a small change of 1.6 billion per person. Can we say wheres the love thought we were allies lol.

I don't think there has ever been any love for the west; just a quiet ambition lying in wait for the opportune time.

As we speak, they are tempering the hammer and sharpening the sickle, IMO.

I do agree but I grew up with this mind set. Everyone is going to dislike or hate one side of a party of the world but you can not live with fear but instead live with the fact knowing that the Morales you site with are the ones that no one can ever take from you :)

Economically speaking, Russia is part of the BRICS nations, so it is expected to rise up as an economic power within the next decade or so. Whether it will turn against the West like in Soviet days I don't know, but I have no doubts that it will be an economic power not too long away.

Joseph Stalin: "When we hang the capitalists they will sell us the rope we use."

Not the quote I had in mind, but it's a start. We've been selling them a lot of rope since the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Nick, I shouldn't have said "Russians". I should have said "Soviets". We need you and Ludwick to shed some knowledge on historical cycles of Soviet power. :yes

Which is why I made the distinction between the economic power of Russia, and the influence of the Soviets. I'm not sure of the influence of the Soviets, but I am sure of the economic power of Russia. If there was a strong Soviet presence in Russia still, it could mean very interesting times could be ahead of us.

Very true the economics ways of new Russia that is shaping out to be the same way the economic was for the soviets back in the cold war. And a scary thing to think of is the most technology that they have today would make them a far more dangers soviet empire if they were to shape back to there old ways. So fingers crossed that Russia keeps the US in there good agenda. :)

What i read elsewhere is that Russia has worldly ambitions again and that they are very close to Communist China. Them too are waiting until the US collapses economically and then together have shares in the spoils.

I doubt they would go against us. According to Nostradamus Russia and the United States are supposed to become allies in the near future.

I am not really worried anymore about who has what share on land but other then that my lord has my spirit and i am heriting the kingdom you can have every gold that this world has but youll never have me :) but other then that yes indeed scary seeing that russia is on a quick uprising. which has my prediction since i was 16 is that russia would be the ones who would come in during a collapse and just take over everything if they had a chance.

I don't know, but look at the admiration of Hitler (not so much in Germany, but in the USA) of today. The mainstream American still sees him as evil, but he DOES have his devoted followers. :screwloose

At least STALIN didn't lead HIS country to loose a war and suffer widespread destruction. Stalin didn't start the war, Hitler attacked!

I can KINDA see Stalin being looked upon favorably.
