Physical therapy should go a long way with helping him to regain regular movements.

Once he's home, and when you can, take him swimming (in a pool setting). Swimming really helps with strength development.
 
It would be better to wait until after the storm system has passed through.
 
Understandable about a cat 1. My area deals with tornadoes, along with severe thunderstorms of varying strengths. We've had winds in excess of 80 mph, without tornado activity in the immediate area.
 
my father is at healthsouth. I will visit him this Friday
 
Therapy after a stroke can take a while. And it's best to remain where he's at so the therapy can be more effective sooner.

Nice view from his room!

Show him pictures of everyone ... talk about some of the stories he's told over the years that you remember. Whether a stroke or a head injury, it may appear as though dementia has set in. Instead, the brain just needs some reminders to open the memory passages. It will take time, though. And there aren't guarantee all memories will return.
