Bible Study Defining and understanding biblical words and terms.

JLB I totally agree with you, but what I was trying to point out is two different types of enduring within the context of those scriptures. One is a temporal belief and the other one is believeing no matter what until the end.

Ok. It’s a good word and topic to be discussed.

Both believing and enduring; a patient continuance while suffering persecution, are required to the end, in order to be saved; (to receive the object of our hope, the salvation of our soul).

This is a far cry, from what is being taught in mainstream Churches.

Yes the faith message has really been abused and twisted into a way to fleece the sheep.

I think I do the faith definition next.

Bless you.

JLB

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Here is the definition of faith according to the Strongs -

Faith pistis. Strongs 4102 - Noun

I. conviction of the truth of anything, belief; in the NT of a conviction or belief respecting man's relationship to God and divine things, generally with the included idea of trust and holy fervour born of faith and joined with it
A. relating to God
i. the conviction that God exists and is the creator and ruler of all things, the provider and bestower of eternal salvation through Christ
B. relating to Christ
i. a strong and welcome conviction or belief that Jesus is the Messiah, through whom we obtain eternal salvation in the kingdom of God
C. the religious beliefs of Christians
D. belief with the predominate idea of trust (or confidence) whether in God or in Christ, springing from faith in the same
II. fidelity, faithfulness
A. the character of one who can be relied on

Bible dictionary’s, lexicons, and study guides are a good place to start, but are not necessarily the final say on how a biblical word is defined.

Faith being a noun, is something we receive from God, when He speaks to us, whether through a messenger or directly.

Believe, a verb, is our part, it’s what we either do or not do, that determines whether the faith we receive from God will be activated to produce His intended divine result.

I will post some examples, and scriptures in the next post.

JLB

C. the religious beliefs of Christians

I would like to add a bit more to that. It's not adding to scripture, but the definition of faith.

The religious belief of Christians who believe Christ Jesus is our faith as we trust in Him and is the very hope of God's salvation to all who will believe.

I think if we continue to explore this word, and look at the source of our faith, and where faith comes from, it will help to unite and ur understanding.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

If look at the Hebrews Hall of Fame, we see this principle in action.

Each person who operated by faith heard God speak to them.

JLB

Now for understanding the principle of faith.

Faith is a noun; the substance of things hoped for.

Everything in the natural world finds its beginning in the substance of faith; from the invisible substance of God’s faith.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. Hebrews 11:1-3

Faith comes from God; The living God, the God of the Bible.

Faith comes to us from God, as He speaks, inspires, or moves upon us.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17

Budda, Allah, Krishna or any of the gods of other religions can not produce faith it their followers.

We can not “work up” faith from ourselves.

Faith comes from God alone.

JLB

Understanding the principle of faith, continued -

I think we use biblical words in our modern everyday communication sometimes to express ourselves, without fully understanding the meaning of those words as they were expressed in the original language.

Biblically Speaking -

Faith is a noun.
Believe is a verb.

Faith is what we receive from God when He speaks to us.

Believe is our part that we must do in order to activate the faith that we receive from God when He speaks to us.

Believe also carries the idea of obedience.

If we believe Jesus is Lord, but don’t submit to Him in obedience then we really don’t believe, the Gospel; The truth.

Unbelief and disobedience are the same Greek word.

Without obedience faith remains dormant and inactive; unable to produce the intended divine result.

But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? James 2:20-21

The “work” that James refers to here is the work or action of obedience, in response to God speaking to Abraham.

Faith without this action of obedience is dead, dormant, lifeless, inactive and incomplete, just as a body without a spirit is dead and lifeless, in active and incomplete; unable to function.

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:26

JLB

I totally agree with all of this. Faith, belief and obedience all go hand in hand as you can not have one without the other as it is all action of servitude to God.

Jesus gave us the key to being fruitful:

But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Matthew 13:23

I am starting this thread, in hopes of bringing some clarification and understanding to some of our discussions that concern foundational doctrines of the Church, that Christ taught to His disciples, who in turn taught to their generation, that are written for us in the New Testament.

Key biblical words and phrases that were used by our Lord, and the writers of the New Testament, may have a different meaning than their modern day counterparts, used today.

There is no need for endless debate over simple, basic biblical words and terms, that degrade into unhealthy dialogue between Christians.

In addition I hope to see these definitions, that should be widely agreed upon by staff and participants, added to the new Statement of Faith (glossary of biblical words) that is being developed, when the TOS is complete.

Having unity and harmony concerning biblical words and terms is the beginning to having unity and harmony concerning sound biblical doctrine, for it is the words that make up the doctrine.

Misunderstand the words and we will misunderstand the doctrine.

  • till we all come to the unity of the faith

  • that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine,

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Ephesians 4:11-16

Here are just a few of the biblical words and terms that I hope to see us define and understand as a community, for the purpose of unity and growth in this body of believers, as well as those that the Lord will bring here in the coming months and years.

Love
Believe
Faith
Salvation
Eternal life (now & then)
Lost
Found
Gospel
Repent
Grace

Inherit the kingdom
The faith
The love of God
The truth
The doctrine of Christ (the doctrine)
Son of God (three aspects)

Hopefully others, including staff will add to this list.

Paul said, I know in part, but we have the mind of Christ.

Blessings to all,

JLB
Hi,
I remembered that you had started this thread.
Do you think a new one should be started with just the word and the definition?

I'm not sure you meant THIS thread to be the one for the TOS....?

I did mean for this thread to be the one for the SOF, glossary of biblical words and terms.

Truthfrees has already made a post in this thread that shows how these definitions will ultimately be cataloged.

I thought a thread that is open to all, where everyone could get involved would be a good place to start.

I’m hoping you will help as well.

I Sent a PM to Ospen hoping he will get involved as well.

From these discussions about some of the relevant biblical words that make up foundational doctrine that is pertinent to our salvation, I’m hoping the staff will have the material they need to develope a sound glossary for our new SOF.

This I believe will be an ongoing project.

This is just the beginning.

when you determine a definition for a word or a term are you going to edit your 1st post to add the definition to the word?

are you also going to add new words/terms people suggest to your 1at post?

if so can you put the words/terms in alphabetical order so that we can keep track easily of which words/terms have been determined?

If you have a word that you want to see defined clearly from the scriptures, then make a post about it, here.

So many times I see folks redefining words from the Bible that don’t express a true biblical meaning.

Believe is one of those words.

So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Acts 16:31

Many people think those word means “realize Jesus exists”, or
“Realize Jesus Is Lord”, without understanding the original meaning.

Where could I find the complete list?
It seems like you have all the important words.

I just found Truthfrees post on this thread.
He's not around right now, so I'll wait for him to get back
before continuing.
You're right of course...there needs to be some organization here or we'll lose the words. (the list, I mean).

To be cont'd....

I believe you and Truthfrees are the ones to organize this into a glossary of New Testament words and terms.

I reposted for you.

Ultimately it will be up to the owner and staff to approve the final definitions, but we as a community can give them our best input.

This will be a work in progress.
