Bible Study Defining and understanding biblical words and terms.

The term “the faith” in the Bible refers to our common faith in Christ Jesus for salvation.

Scripture teaches we are in a common “household of faith” as family.

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
Galatians 6:10

Scripture texts -

Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. Jude 1:3

Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
2 Corinthians 13:5

And I was unknown by face to the churches of Judea which were in Christ. But they were hearing only, “He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy.” Galatians 1:22-23

till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, Ephesians 4:13-14

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, To Timothy, a true son in the faith: 1 Timothy 1:1-2

This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy 1:18-20

Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 1 Timothy 3:8-9

For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 3:13

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 1 Timothy 4:1

But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Timothy 5:8

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:10

  • The Holy Spirit through the writers of the New Testament, urge us to examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith, and earnestly contend for the faith, as well as keep the faith, so that we do not depart from the faith, or stray from the faith or even, as some, become shipwreck concerning the faith we have in Christ Jesus.

Specifically the Holy Spirit warns us of the last days whereby some will depart from the faith, because they listened and gave heed to doctrines of demons.

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 1 Timothy 4:1

The day by day usage meaning of FAITH may be,
Conviction of the truth without having to see proof for that truth.

Any way I like that as a definition.

Heb 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things……..hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
……….conviction of the truth of anything…….as a confident expectation without having to see proof.
- Original: πίστις FAITH
- Transliteration: Pistis
- Phonetic: pis'-tis
- Definition: conviction of the truth of anything,
belief;
in the NT of a conviction or belief respecting man's relationship to God and divine things,
- Original: ἐλπίζω HOPE
- Transliteration: Elpizo
- Phonetic: el-pid'-zo
- Definition: as a confident expectation without having to see proof.

Jesus used the word endure synonymously with the word believe as far as context goes.

But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Luke 8:13

But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.
Matthew 13:20-21

JLB

But he who endures to the end shall be saved. Matthew 24:13

Endure - Strongs G5278 - hypomenō

The KJV translates Strong's G5278 in the following manner: endure (11x), take patiently (2x), tarry behind (1x), abide (1x), patient (1x), suffer (1x).
Outline of Biblical Usage [?]
  1. to remain
    1. to tarry behind
  2. to remain i.e. abide, not recede or flee
    1. to persevere: under misfortunes and trials to hold fast to one's faith in Christ
    2. to endure, bear bravely and calmly: ill treatments

Context of Matthew 24:13:

“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Matthew 24:9-14

Endure, persevere and remain in the faith of Christ (in Christ) while suffering persecution, tribulation and death.

Salvation - Strongs G4991 - sōtēria ; NOUN

The KJV translates Strong's G4991 in the following manner: salvation (40x), the (one) be saved (1x), deliver (with G1325) (1x), health (1x), saving (1x), that (one) be saved (with G1519) (1x).
Outline of Biblical Usage [?]
  1. deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation
    1. deliverance from the molestation of enemies
    2. in an ethical sense, that which concludes to the soul's safety or salvation
      1. of Messianic salvation
  2. salvation as the present possession of all true Christians
  3. future salvation, the sum of benefits and blessings which the Christians, redeemed from all earthly ills, will enjoy after the visible return of Christ from heaven in the consummated and eternal kingdom of God.

  • The eternal preservation of our entire being, spirit, soul, and body, from all enemies, including death.
  • The saving, delivering and rescuing of our entire being from the wrath of God, which is the second death, the lake of fire.

For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 1 Thessalonians 5:9

Saved - Strongs G4982 - sōzō ; VERB

The KJV translates Strong's G4982 in the following manner: save (93x), make whole (9x), heal (3x), be whole (2x), miscellaneous (3x).
Outline of Biblical Usage [?]
  1. to save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction
    1. one (from injury or peril)
      1. to save a suffering one (from perishing), i.e. one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health
      2. to preserve one who is in danger of destruction, to save or rescue
    2. to save in the technical biblical sense
      1. negatively
        1. to deliver from the penalties of the Messianic judgment
        2. to save from the evils which obstruct the reception of the Messianic deliverance

Though a different word from salvation (sōtēria), saved (sozo), is used in the same way. Salvation is what we receive, (noun), as an end result of what Jesus did for us on the cross, being that He saved (verb) us, continues to save us, as we continue to believe, and continue in the faith.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Romans 5:8-10

Therefore the same definition applies:

Saved -
  • The eternal preservation of our entire being, spirit, soul, and body, from all enemies, including death.
  • The saving, delivering and rescuing of our entire being from the wrath of God, which is the second death, the lake of fire.

Inherit the kingdom of God

Jesus used this phrase when teaching His disciples in His Olivet Discourse.

It refers to those who have their part, in the kingdom of God, on the Day of Judgement.

31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Matthew 25:31-34

  • Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdomprepared for you from the foundation of the world:

Those on His left hand, who do not inherit the kingdom of God, will hear these words.

Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: Mathew 25:41

It’s very easy to understand from this context what inherit the kingdom means and when it takes place.

Paul used this term when writing to the Church. Here is one example.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21

  • those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Inherit - Strong's G2816 - klēronomeō

  1. to receive a lot, receive by lot
    1. esp. to receive a part of an inheritance, receive as an inheritance, obtain by right of inheritance

    2. to be an heir, to inherit
  2. to receive the portion assigned to one, receive an allotted portion, receive as one's own or as a possession

  3. to become partaker of, to obtain

JLB

Scriptures that pertain to inheriting the kingdom, which also mentions “entering the kingdom of God”.

21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.” Acts 14:21-22

  • exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.

A couple of things about this verse I would like to point out.

First of all, Paul exhorted these disciples of Jesus Christ that they must through many tribulations, enter the kingdom of God, which refers to some time in the future, since it is by these very tribulations, that they would experience throughout their life, are the means by which they will enter the kingdom of God.

Paul is plainly referring to that Day, when we stand before the Lord to be Judged according to our deeds, and hear one of two things from Him:

  1. ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
  2. ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:

Jesus this to His disciples.

And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire— Mark 9:47

  • It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire—

Eternal Life: Now

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. John 17:3

Eternal Life is knowing God: know Him

Scriptures that utilize “know Him”.

  • Same John who recorded John 17:3

Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 1 John 2:3

He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1 John 2:4

in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not
know God,
and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 1:8

To know Him, to be joined with Him as one spirit.

To be connected in relationship to Him, as a branch is connected to the vine from which it draws its sustaining life from.

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:4-6

Eternal Life: Then

The eternal life to come.

Eternal Life - Strongs G166 - aiōnios

The KJV translates Strong's G166 in the following manner: eternal (42x), everlasting (25x), the world began (with G5550) (2x), since the world began (with G5550) (1x), for ever (1x).
Outline of Biblical Usage [?]
  1. without beginning and end, that which always has been and always will be
  2. without beginning
  3. without end, never to cease, everlasting

Key Scriptures that pertain to the everlasting life to come;
Inheriting Eternal (everlasting) Life

So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.
Mark 10:29-30

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. Matthew 19:29

eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; Romans 2:7

But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
Luke 20:35-36

But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. Romans 6:22

These are a few scriptures that teach us about eternal life to come.

Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’

Lost - Strongs G622 - apollymi

  1. to destroy
    1. to put out of the way entirely, abolish, put an end to ruin
    2. render useless
    3. to kill
    4. to declare that one must be put to death
    5. metaph. to devote or give over to eternal misery in hell
    6. to perish, to be lost, ruined, destroyed
  2. to destroy
    1. to lose
Words associated contextually with the word lost.

And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:6-7

Lost:
  • Separated from God; unreconciled with God
  • Unjust; Unrighteous. Not right with God
  • Sinner in need of repentance.

Note: For a sheep to be lost, it must first belong to the Shepherd.

A person who is lost needs to repent in order to reconciled back to God.

A person who is lost needs salvation.

Salvation as defined in the Bible means: From post # 45

  • The saving, delivering and rescuing of our entire being from the wrath of God, which is the second death, the lake of fire.

Salvation - Strongs G4991 - sōtēria ; NOUN

  1. deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation

Led by the Spirit; Walk in the Spirit

To be led by the Spirit, means we live our life according to the power of the Spirit within, resulting in manifesting love and the righteousness of faith rather than living according to the sinful desires of our flesh, manifesting the works of the flesh.

Here is the context:

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:12-14

Here are the two choices for every Christian who are born again, and empowered by the Spirit, to live their life:

  • if you live according to the flesh you will die
  • if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

“IF” clearly indicates the condition of choice, each of us must make.

I think the above need one clarifying comment:
(which we all deal with a lot of these forums)

Does a person become separated from God when THEY SIN (one sin, which we probably do every day)

or

Does a person become separated from God when they return to a LIFE OF SIN and thus REALLY walk again in the flesh.

My reply would be the second...
and you?

Great question!

Personally, I would tend to agree with you, based on some clarification and additional scriptural support.

However, I would like to address your question head on and at face value, by referring to the words of the Lord Jesus Christ, in context with this subject of His sheep becoming lost, or separated from Him.

“What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray. Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.
Matthew 18:12-17

  • if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.

It’s interesting to note it wasn’t Jesus Himself going after the wayward brother.

This is actually a more detailed explanation of someone going after one of His sheep who needs to repent and return to the Lord, from the parable of the lost sheep that Luke also records.

We don’t know what specific “fault” or sin the brother in this story did, and it really doesn’t matter.

  • Remember our perspective of sin may be entirely different that the Lord’s perspective.

It only took one sin to cause all of mankind to fall and become corrupt.

Adam’s sin wasn’t even murder or sexual immorality.

Don’t eat the fruit of the tree...

So, based on the teaching from Christ, one sin or fault perpetrated against another brother is enough, IF he doesn’t repent.

You said. "So, based on the teaching from Christ, one sin or fault perpetrated against another brother is enough, IF he doesn’t repent. "

I'm going to push back lightly on this, but before you disagree, I would appreciate you hear me out and understand clearly what I am saying.

First, I am NOT saying we have a licence to sin. When we become aware of our sin, we must repent. This is not in question.

What is in question is sin itself and we see this in Pauls writing to the Corinthians in the matter of eating meat or holding one day higher than another. Paul goes as far as to say that if one man holds eating meat offered to idols as a sin, then to that man it is sin. However, it is only a sin in that mans eyes, not Gods so he has no right to bind that sin upon another.

Let's say these two men disagree, how does Paul tell the one stronger in the faith to deal with the brother weaker in the faith who considers it sin? More so, what happens when these two go to the church, yet the weaker brother accuses the church of heresy?

James writes of sin that leads to death, and its a progression. One does not loose their salvation because they sin. They loose their salvation when that sin grows in them, and they continue to feed it and the sin matures into death.

This goes back to what Paul wrote to Timothy. There are sins we commit that we are not aware of. God judges us differently on those than the sins where we harden our hearts and willfully sin. When we unintentionally sin and we become aware of that sin, we now have a choice. We repent of that sin which leads to salvation, or we harden our hearts and the Holy Spirit persues us. If we harden our hearts further, that sin leads to death.

That is how I understand it anyway.

I just read post no. 54 and I'll have to agree with it.

Adam's sin is a totally different situation...he did not OBEY God,,, and that IS sin...when we do not obey, we sin.

A sin will affect our relationship with God somehow and it needs to be forgiven which is why we are sorry for it and ask forgiveness. If we are NOT sorry, there is some problem because what sin does is hurt Jesus' feelings and causes some distance between us, but we are still "married" to Him.

But if we return to a LIFE OF SIN, as in 1 John 3:9, then I'd have to say that we cut-off our relationship with God since we no longer have any respect for God and quench the Holy Spirit, which we are told not to do.

I DO see a difference between sinning
and
living a life of sin.

One can be forgiven...one cannot.

P.S. the second one can also be forgiven, but the person must repent once again,,,change their direction, and return to God.

First, I am NOT saying we have a licence to sin. When we become aware of our sin, we must repent. This is not in question.

Of course not.

Hopefully you understand I’m not discussing my opinion, or the “way I see it”, which I hope I made clear by my opening statement.

I’m only answering a direct question, and discussing the words and teaching of Christ.

I’m not discussing things that “are not” sin, but things which are sin, as Jesus plainly says... if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.

So we know for sure Jesus is referring to a sin, one brother perpetrated against another brother.

It could have been adultery
It could have been a theft
It could have been lie a brother told as a false witness

We don’t know, and like I said, it doesn’t matter.

Jesus is teaching about a brother who sinned against another brother, in which He said to go after the brother and convince him to repent.

If he doesn’t, then go and get one or two more.

If he still won’t hear then go and get the Church, maybe some elders, are try to convince this brother to repent and be restored.

If not, then he is to be as a heathen and a tax collector, which means a sinner; a person who is separated from Christ.

Jesus did not say he fell back into a lifestyle of sin, and after awhile needed to be counseled.

  • if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.

This is me, using scripture, to answer a straight forward question, with a straightforward answer from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Push back all you want to brother, it won’t change His words.

I understand.

It seems to me Jesus is giving us a commandment that if our brother sins against us, we are to go to him.
What if you don't tell him, and he moves away and you lose contact? Wouldn't you be sinning for not doing what our Lord commanded us?

How would you show repentance in this case, and would your salvation be at stake?

I believe there is willful sin that blatantly defies the commands of God like Adam did and written about in Hebrews 10:26, 27 and then there are sins that others say is sin, but yet not sin in the eyes of God like StoveBolts pointed out in #54.

Paul uses this same principal when writing to Timothy. Saul was zealous for the Lord and persecuted Christ believing he was doing Gods will. He repented when the truth was revealed to him.... And the rest is history.
