Demonic faces appear at the end of tv show Wipeout!

My children (ages 7 and 8) were watching Wipeout last night. When I walked into the room with less than minute of the show remaining, the female host and a female contestant were standing next to each other as the host was giving her last minute comments. Then the most bizarre thing occured. There faces got really white, and their eyes and mouths got black and slightly distorted. I freaked because it instantly reminded me of the scene from The Exorcism of Emily Rose, where the faces of people she passed in the streets turned white and demonic (almost like the mask used for the movie Scream).

At first I thougt my eyes were playing tricks on me until my kids exclaimed, "Mommmy the ladies faces turned into monsters!" My mom in the room also saw it as well as her friend whom she was speaking with on the phone. I called my best friend to tell her but she had seen it too. Her daughters ages 12 and 14 also described the faces as "monsters." The whole facial disortion thing lasted less than a second.

I don't know if this was some sick joke or indications of things to come, but I have 7 witnessess, including myself who saw this. I've contacted the FCC and ABC because if this was a joke it was completely inaoppropriate for a PG rated show. I hope to hear back something soon.

could it be a problem with the signal? digitial tv signals arent perfect.

JoJo, it was the episode that came on last night 9/16. The show was scheduled to end at 9:02pm and the incidet took place at 9:01 pm. I don't know what episode that was...

Jason...a signal problem I could understand. However the distortion only affected their faces. No other part of their body or none of the background was distorted. Only their faces looked hideous and it scared my 14 year old niece. What signal problem only targets a specific part of the body and turns the eyes of a person black. Did you see the faces that haunted the girl in the movi Exorcist of Emily Rose? (check out a youtube clip to get an idea of what I'm talking about) This was too specific to be unintential...whether on the producers end or on satan's end.

I think I found the clip. Like I said...I did not watch the entire show...so I couldn't even tell you who the contestants were..,..but I just watched this clip and with literally less than 1 minute remaining I saw the hostess' face contort....I'm too freaked and its too late at night for me to really analyze it right now. But I'll look at it in the morning. Here is the link if anyone is interested. The scary face is at about 43:10.

Here is the scary face link.

I found the part you were talking about. Too creepy. The woman's face warped into a bizarre distortion like the movie you were talking about. I would think it was just a joke.

If this was a joke, none of us who saw it were laughing. It was completely inappropriate and scary to the kids watching. I'll be making some phone calls tomorrow...someone is going to have to answer and apologize for this. :mad

I'll tell you this, those big wig TV executives are not going to care what we think, unless many, many stand up to them. The ratings is more important to them than our children.

true, and that's a reason why i no longer watch much tv, to much trash, passed as entertainment.

Update: The FCC sent me an email confirming that they got my complaint. I also sent them a screen shot of the incident (I hated looking at her face again)...I started to post it but then again it would definitely be too scary for some.

...I'm trying to think of the kids when I look at this clip.. but it all seems like overreaction.. or a big joke. To me, the post makes me think you walked into the room, screamed at the top of your lungs when you saw it.. then your kids got scared when you rushed to turn off the television while shouting "Demons! Cover your eyes children! Satan is trying to get you!"

I mean.. come on.. they're going to grow up seeing this sort of stuff. Did you tell them it wasn't real? It was special effects? Or did you read them some scripture for ways to protect them from demons?

I let the next clip run after seeing that episode.. and I think "POPUP 1sec SPECIAL EFFECT DEMONS!" is the least of your problems. The clip after the episode had so many butt jokes in 1 minute and 32 seconds.. "Bootylicious has been BEHINDDD *image of her butt and someone circling it with a marker* every round." the first announcer says. The second announcer replies "Oh boy she has!" Then they say later "What is she doing? She can't show off her assets unless shes in the lead!"

It'd probably be best to buy some VHS copies of Christian cartoons and play it for your children for the rest of their lives.

I feel like your children are going to have my childhood.. but then again.. I don't know anything about you and I'm just exaggerating everything in this post. :p

Just don't make them dress up as bible characters and send them off to church on Halloween.. please?

I really don't see how grown adults or even teenagers on this forum could be frightened by this special effects 'demon' face.. I've seen worse paper dolls in peoples yards on Halloween.. but I'll respect that and just link it instead of putting image brackets around it..

At most, they had a blooper reel where some girl was making a silly face and they decided to cover it up with some silly special effects..

Its kind of deep to me that you think my reaction was an overreaction...but for real...these are my kids and I will react how I want. If I walked into the room and screamed then I would have said so. All I stated was that my 7 and 8 year olds described the face of a lady on a GAME show as a monster. The incident did not last long enough for any serious reactions from them but it startled all us who were not expecting to see this. My children are trained in scriputres and we talk about the enemy but the point of the post was it as a completely inappropriate thing to do on a PG rated show.

No you don't know me...if you did you probably wouldn't have gone there. Wipeout is not a show my children are allowed to watch often. I understand it is a primetimeshow, so I don't expect all the content to be Walt Disney. But I usually watch with my children to catch anything inappropriate and to monitor the racy commmercials that are usually shown. I think that those who like horror films should go for it...my little ones are not ready for that yet and I would appreciate the horror genre to stay with horror. The face shown wasn't some innocent casper mask and wasn't funny at all.

Look...the face isn't the worst I've ever seen either...and your talking to a long time (but no so much nowadays) horror fan. But some people don't touch horror with a ten foot pole and you cannot make them comfortable with it no matter how hard you try. But the bigger issue is the CHILDREN who have not been exposed to this before being tricked into seeing it. Will my children see scarier faces than this one in the future...probably.....will they see porn at some point in their life.....probably....do they have to see it now.....NO.

And that's my point.

Blessings,
Deirdre

I watch Wipeout almost every week, and I'll bet the scary face was sort of an inside joke on something that occurred earlier in the show (I'll have to watch the whole show to know). Wipeout is funny in that it takes one little word or action and makes a sort of theme about it throughout the show. That's part of the humor, like in the little nicknames they give the people. I'm willing to bet the scary face was just part of another recurring theme, not just a random opportunity to make a scary face.

But I can see how the face would be scary to little kids. :gah
