I'm the type to hide in the back (in the sound booth) happily pushing the buttons to make things go so others can teach or make music.

Then in August the music minister said they were starting the christmas choir rehearsels and everyone was welcome. Well, I started that and after bouncing around a bit landed as a second soprano.

Once that was over though I expected to go back to the sound booth.

However ... I joined the regular choir instead. Singing is fun. Its just weird. 'Cause I have to stand up in front of people. And like, make noise, preferably good noise. I can't go hide in the back while doing this.

I'm still doing fill-in for the sound booth when they get short staffed, or like this weekend when there is a ladies retreat at the church (all of the rest of the sound booth folks are men).

well. Let no one intimidate you...not even the faces of the congregation should. Don't miss rehearsals. I like the way we treat begginers. We make them sing before a crowd of specators. They are made to do the difficult part.. And I like giving the complex piano chords...just to test your stability. And one other thing we do is, we tell them get ready to sing. You might be called to lead next Sunday. And heartattack won't kill them

Like other styles, it's an art in itself, and requires effort and practice.

Yes, sure I love metal. I seen women do that kind of singing, too (and it's particular awesome if a girl sounds dark like that, because it's the opposite of what you'd expect), so I started practicing and actually learned it. Not good enough to perform on a stage yet, but I will get good at it.
It's a bit of a strain on your vocal cords if you do it wrong, so I have great respect for all those singers male and female that can perform growl singing for years without ruining their voices. Also it requires strong lungs.

The trick is doing it without your normal vocal cords. But that's not so easy, humans automatically activate them when making words.

Re. lungs, I guess that you as a woman that has been (or was) a smoker for many years, your lungs are kind of tough, or whatever, and your voice is possible a bit more rugged.

If smoking would make our lungs tougher we wouldn't have to quit, we would rather encourage people to smoke. ;)
Unfortunately I must assume that my lungs are rather damaged after years of smoking. (Medical research says smoke damaged lungs can recover in time though.)

Well if you see a woman on a stage you'd expect she's gonna sound sweet and have a high pitched angel voice or a sexy alto voice. So a woman growling like an angry demon is very contradictory to our expectation and our experience, thus it seems to sound even more dark and aggressive than a growling man.

So a woman growling like an angry demon is very contradictory to our expectation and our experience, thus it seems to sound even more dark and aggressive than a growling man.

Well, I guess it can be classified in various ways, I suppose.

A woman at a classical music concert who sings in a piercing, clear soprano voice, maybe in a floppy dress with a low neck and on stilettos, can be a nice style.

Or a woman that has practised a more rasping, rigorous sound like Tina Turner, and sings at a hard rock concert, and is accustomed to wearing either slashed jeans or leather pants, and boots, and studded jacket, can be a nice style, too.

I guess both are different expressions of femininity, right? but anyway, musically it all requires effort and practice and perfectioning.
