Do you have a good singing voice?

I can do okay. I think the ability to sing on key is one of the gifts God has given me although I use it mostly for Him. I also sing in a men's gospel choir. In the church choir I sing the tenor part and in the men's gospel choir I sing the 2nd tenor part which usually is the melody. I am often asked to sing solos in both groups. At first I was very apprehensive about it but if I concentrate on singing the message contained in the music I find God keeps the jitters under control. I also sing the lead part in a quartet that was formed out of our men's group. Recently, a neighboring church asked me to sing the tenor part in a SATB quartet. A couple years ago I was asked to sing tenor for a concert choir that was put together in a neighboring town about 10 miles away. I agreed maybe a littel too hastily because when I arrived at our first practice I learned we were performing 8 movements from Handel's Messiah. Yikes! Even the bass part of his music is high for tenors and my range didn't go quite that high so I did find a couple places where I was reaching quite a bit. It was fun though and I loved it.

The trick is doing it without your normal vocal cords. But that's not so easy, humans automatically activate them when making words.

Claudya:

I know what you mean; it's a kind of deeply breathed, rasping sound, which is similar to the voiced pharyngeal fricative.

Do you maybe practise in front of a mirror when you try hard rock / heavy metal lyrics?

Can anyone here comfortably do Handel's Halleluyah???

One of the ways to test your ability (i.e for newbies)...after say, 4 months of serious training is to try songs like Beauty and the Beast: Celine Dion. If a male and a female can do this very well, then: WELCOME TO THE GLOBE OF MUSIC. This is just a step tho....there are more complex ones

Celine Dion has a good voice (she's from up here, actually). I love her rendition of O Holy Night.

Mind you, I really do think Madonna has a great voice. Don't always like her songs, (least of all, some of the accompanying videos).

I can't but my youngest daughter can beautifully. She competed in high school by sending a demo (one of hundreds) to a college here in CO. She was one of 60 selected to sing at the college with the women's choir for a special appreciatiion concert for the CO firefighters. They sang songs in Japanese, French, and Spanish. Her demo was in Italian and she doesn't speak Italian. She sings 'I Will Always Love You' Whitney Houston, almost as well as Whitney did.

Right now she is taking first year Bible college class, next year she'll go on campus for the second year, and the third year will be for Praise and Worship Music.

Yes - and she's got this great singing pitch. Brandy is superb, Maria Carey is fantastic, W. Houston etc...

One of the ways to learn and improve is: buy and play stuff
