Do you like a good argument?

The more controversial a thread is, the more popular it appears to be. :fullauto:fencing

Why is that?

Some of us want to get our opinions across, but most threads that end up being pages long usually are because of either deliberate or accident communication breakdown.

Often true. I would also add the people who take an unthinking, rigid stance and argue their case steadfastly despite being thoroughly defeated by facts and logic from their 'opponent'. Some people just don't know when to close their mouths and open their minds.

I do not engage in arguments, I have discussions.

NOT TRUE! You argue all the time!:silly Don't fall for it...

All silliness aside, the longest threads are non-argumentative threads and hardly need to be pointed out.

When your 'brother in Christ' is ever ready to call you 'heretic', or deny that you are saved or even a fellow Christian, the pressure to be right is extremely high.

:thumbsup Yes Kaliani! I think you have put your finger on the true answer. :yes

Many people are entirely convinced that their interpretation is right and anyone who disagrees with them is a 'wicked sinner' - to quote one such person. :gah

It seems to me that only a person who is UNconvinced of what he is proposing would actually behave like that.

Back a few years ago I used to get into heated arguments on a community site about dogs. I'll admit I thought it was fun.
I did end up learning a lot about dogs that way, nonetheless. The most heated discussions were the ones about training methods, like "positive reinforcement" training versus "negative reinforcement" training, and whether "Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer" was a monster or not. Next in line would probably have been the discussions on "responsible breeders" versus "BYBs". The discussions on dog food often got out of hand as well.
Looking back it's silly that those discussions were so heated considering they're of relative unimportance.

On controversial topics I like to give my opinion--if I know what I'm talking about. If not, I try to just stay out of it.

Some people naturally will argue black is white and white is black.
Sometimes to save face too, instead of conceding that they may be wrong.

at times its pride. ever notice sadly that bible study forum theres even arguing? its pointless to post things that i see at times so i wont do it as much.i dont agree with my pastor on some things and well next week is romans 9 on wednesday. lovely that will be but often i learn from the Holy Spirit and what some say.

Hi Aardverk,

I think most people like to get in the fray, but as varied as the reasons are for arguing, I think we should take the time to consider why we hold the views we do and consider what the other person is saying with the purpose of studying the Scriptures to know what truth is. If they Scriptures contradict you, that means you're wrong. That you is the general you, not the four star general. :)

the argument may lead to a vain dispute, while the show(proceeding) of love can save many humans

Yes, we all need to be made to think carefully from time to time. I find that consideration of other people's views helps to keep my mind 'open'. I feel that an 'open' mind is healthy and a closed mind is deplorable.

The fact that we can find clearly conflicting scripture is indeed a very good reason to keep an open mind. Sadly, many of us decide which words we will accept and which we will ignore and never review those decisions again. A few well chosen words from someone else help now and again even if we don't agree with them. :chin
