just a question. i live in a condo complex (basically apartments, but most people own the unit), so...the level of friendliness is a couple step up living in an actual apartment complex, but I would think/assume lower than most stable, residential neighborhoods. its the south, so i imagine things are a bit....more cordial, civil, surface-level friendly...than many other parts of the US. so...

do y'all talk with your neighbors? if you're a bit older...have you noticed changes, over the years, in how people who share a community, a neighborhood, interact (or...don't interact, as the case may be...) ?

i have -1- neighbor who chatted me up the other day. it was...refreshing. i had a place to go, but it was still...good, somehow. i felt more anchored into this place. other than that...nope. nothin' doing.

just another conversation starter... :-)
 
I don't, I pretty much keep to myself. But my elderly neighbor (who I help out and met through my church) reaches out to the people who live next to her, gives their kids gifts on holidays, etc.
 
The UK bS cbanged dramatically. If used to be a lovely atmosphere. Neighbours helped each other when ever needed. I think they learned a lot from the war. When my family's home was bombed they lost absolutely everything. They were rehomed but had nothing in their house and no money. Their new neighbour's did not know them but the day they moved in they knocked on the door with pans, blankets etc. The people who helped were Jewish and Christian
Everyone spoke to each other and decades later it stayed the same. It is different now. There are still some very friendly people but many who are not
I speak to anyone. I have met some lovely neighbours and some not so nice :lol I still smile at them though. I try to find something common between us, if their isn't anything I listen to them, and learn l sorts of things.
 
I don't usually talk to the neighbours wherever I live. They just do there thing and I do mine. Everyone to there own business. Sometimes I will say hello or give a wave. Maybe short basic conversation. I don't want to know everyones whole life story.

I don't particularly want associate with my neighbours, not at this point of time. Because I become empathically entangled with their emotions, and have to carry around extra baggage.
 
Living out in the country I only have two neighbors down our lane and they are our landlords in one house and their daughters family in the other. We all get along great, but usually only talk to each other if we are outside or I take the rent check down to them.

My hubby is the social butterfly while I'm more of a sit back take it all in kinda person.

Of course, I speak to my neighbors, I tell some of them to get off them there drugs and get a job, instead of stealing.
Tell them, don't come messing around here, lol.
Then other neighbors will look out for my house, as I would them.
 
What an interesting question!
Well CE, I live in a small town of about 5,000.
When I moved here there were only 4 houses and mine.
Now there are plenty.
I know all my neighbors - those around me and some in other streets near here. We're all friendly except for one guy, married with one daughter - he won't say hello to anyone. This is very bad in a place where everyone knows each other and tries to get along...but we all don't care much. His wife is nice; his daughter is like him (she's 18 now).

I always knew my immediate neighbors, even in NY.
I think it's good to have a little community where everyone knows each other. Two of my paesani families moved next door and across the street. When they speak to each other, I hear my hometwon dialect. It's fun to listen to and makes my hubby and myself feel like we're in our hometown.
 
that's awesome, wondering. I'm thinking maybe my parents' neighborhood stuff is...not unheard of, but I think its more like...a mix of social class issues (they were/are upwardly mobile, they're now well-to-do) and new(er) people moving in...

obviously, some neighborhood tension in my world does not mean the entire world is some lonely dystopia. LOL.

I'm glad your neighborhood is so connected and lively. :-)

BTW, neighborhoods here in Italy are not socially separated like they were in NY. Here everyone lives together. We have here poor families living with well-to-do families. I can't decide if this is better or worse. Maybe worse? Never thought about it till now...
 
sorry to be all marxist about it , lol. i just...their neighborhood can be -tense-, and i think in -their case- social class is a part of the issue.
 
I talk to my neighbors more and more. We must to walk in Love towards them. So, hi neighbor,

It is a test of virtue for me I think. I try to help more than ever before in my life. Before, I thought...I can't afford to help the poor. But it's not like that the Lord showed me. Anyone less fortunate than me or anyone needing help and it's something I can do...I can, should and have been trying to do that.

I want my neighbors to know what I'm about. And who is my God... and that's how it's done. Need a hand, Brother?

I live in a small community about half hour drive outside the main town. There was a petition to stop the council from closing down our small refuse site, but they didn't listen and a couple days ago it was shut down.

People were saying people will end up dumping there rubbish because there is knowhere local to take it and dispose responsibly and recycle, now I don't know if it was done purpously or not, but I just seen about 10 big bags of rubbish in a gravel pit dumped on the side of the road.

I could clean it up but I'm not going to. I will leave it for the council to clean up. Everyone out here pays high rates.

I agree. Just leave it there and then call them up and complain.
Sometimes towns do such dumb stuff and they tell you they either don't have the money OR it's a law they have to follow.

These things go on around here too. It makes you feel like PEOPLE are never given the right consideration.
