[_ Old Earth _] Gap Theory

A

Hi everyone,

I was wondering how many if indeed any believed in the "Gap Theory"

I ask the question as someone who believes there is a gap between verses 1-2 of Genesis 1

with love and respect, andy153

Thanks Free and mhess,

I was wondering why you both associate the gap theory with a young earth creation.

I believe that there is a gap in scripture between Gen 1:1-2 yet I do not associate that belief with a YEC.

with love and respect, andy153

I see YEC as the only biblical approach to creation, and I see the gap theory and all other theories as an attempt to harmonize scripture with "science"

andy,

I never meant to associate gap theory with YEC, I just reject them both.

I believe in the GAP theory, because I believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible. Each day in Genesis is 1000 years in length. So the events we read about in Genesis Ch 1 have all taken place in the last 12975 years. There are also a shadow or a type of what has teken place over a much longer period of time. So for me BOTH the YEC and the OEC are true. Gen ch 1 is talking about BOTH of them at the same time.

An example of where this takes place is when Jesus answers two questions at once. He is talking about when He will return at the end of the age AND He is talking about when Jerusalem will be destroyed and the temple will be tore down in 70 ad. What happened in Jerusalem in 70 ad on a smaller scale will happen to the whole world on a large scale at the end of this age.

So this is a example of how the Bible can talk about two things at the same time. In fact in some cases there maybe up to 5 levels of meaning to a passage.

When Jesus returns the church will all be in one mind and in one accord. I do not think that YEC's are going to convert to become OEC's. What I believe will happen is that each will see the truth in the other persons beliefs. In this way we will be in agreement, because we will all have the mind of Christ and the divine thoughts of God. We will all see the truth in both the YEC beliefs and in the OEC beliefs.

JohnR7,

I'm curious as to how Gen 1 can be speaking about an earth that is 12875 years old and at the same time imply that it is also a few billion years old. That is a very serious contradiction and both cannot be true. It is a physical and logical impossibility for YEC and OEC to both be true.

And, no, gap theory has little to do with a literal interpretation of the Bible, especially since there is zero Scripture to back it up.

I agree with Free, both YEC and OEC cannot be correct.

Genesis 1:1 speaks of creation, Genesis 1:2 clearly records a cataclysmic change upon the creation as a result of divine judgement.

I believe that this judgement occurred between verses Genesis 1:1-2

Can scripture support any of this? If so please give verses.

I did not say imply, that is your word not mine. I am talking about what they call shadows and types, where one represents the other. The Bible is talking about two things at the same time. God does not change, He does things the same way.

The GAP theory is the best explaination of all that we know right now.

I can give you tons of stuff on this, I studied it for years. First of all here is the verse on the mind of christ.

Romans 15:6a That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God,

2 Cor. 13:11
Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

Philip. 1:27b stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

Philip. 2:2
Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

Here are just a few of the things that make up the mind of Christ:

It takes a little bit of a understanding of science to really understand the young earth. You have to look at the condition the world was in 13,000 years ago. Much of the world was coverd with ice. The ocean level was 300 to 400 feet lower than it is now, because all of the water for all of that snow and ice had to come from somewhere. There was a mass extinction at about that time, there is a bottleneck in the DNA.

If you can not accept that this earth is a different place today than it was 13,000 years ago, then I think you need to study your science book somemore to see what this world was like before.

I've yet to hear anyone with an indepth understanding of science deffinitively explain a young earth. I think Ken Ham does a good job at showing how an old earth is questionable, and a young earth possible though.

That being said, I tend to find a yec to be likely... however not deffinitive by scientific or scriptual grounds.

I won't denounce oec or the gap theory though. I'm just happy that regardless of those three possible models.... God created everything
