The Citrus Family Tree: Most of Your Favorite Fruits Are Designed Hybrids
Almost every variety of orange lemon, lime, and grapefruit in the stores today are citrus hybrids; which means they all come from the same fruit family.

Hybrids are GMO. Everything that we breed to be different than nature is by definition, genetically modified. The big deal is when we shorten the process by just inserting a gene we want to use into the genome of an organism. The dangers are the same, but it sounds scary.
You're right about the bananas being genetically modified. You wouldn't want to eat a wild banana, although you could. The deal is that all the bananas you see in the stores are clones of one plant that had been bred to be ideal for commercial growing and shipping. This makes the banana supply extraordinarily vulnerable to disease, which just happens to be wiping out all of this clone in the world. It's happened before. And we get a new clone eventually.
Why the world's favorite banana may go extinct, and how scientists are trying to save it
Cavendish bananas make up 99% of all banana exports. But the variety is vulnerable to a fungus that's could destroy the $25 billion banana industry.

This is how the Irish Potato Famine came about. It was not propagated by seeds, but by cloning from the eyes of potatoes. So it was pretty much one big monoculture. When the disease hit, it took almost everything.
