There are fourteen definitions of the word authority found in the Strong's Concordance in the Greek Dictionary. This authority is given to us by the grace of God. We know that grace is undeserved unmerited favor, Gods willingness to give us his power and authority even though we do not deserve it. It is Gods power and authority given to us the believer to do the works of the Lord through the Holy Spirit.
This power and authority is what helps us to stand against the principalities of darkness of this world, Ephesians 6:12. John 17:14; Romans 12:2. When we first asked Jesus into our hearts this created a new inner man or spiritual man whom is no longer part of this world, nor should he or she conform themselves to this world. We may have to live in this world, but we need not fear what the world can do against us, Matthew 10:28.
This same power and authority is also to be used in times of afflictions of mind, body and soul as Salvation means to be whole mind, body and soul through the grace of God. Just because we are born again or a child of God does not mean that we are exempt from anything bad happening to us because we do still have to live in this fleshly body, but now when sickness, finances, or whatever Satan can throw at you, you now have power and authority through the grace and mercy of God to speak to those problems no matter what they are and cast them out of your lives as a witness and testimony to God, but also you must have forgiveness in your heart towards any one no matter what they have done, Mark 11:22-26.
Matthew 5:1-16 blessed is the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. When our hearts are right with the Lord then he has compassion on all his children and whatever you ask for in his name he will give you the desires of your heart.
Here are some scriptures to stand on when sickness tries to overcome the flesh:
Psalms 91; Isaiah 53:5, 1Peter 2:24
