Nats' Church Apologizes for Remarks About Jews

By Alan Cooperman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, September 21, 2005; E06

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 93_pf.html

The Washington Nationals suspended a volunteer chaplain and distributed an apology from outfielder Ryan Church yesterday, two days after Church was quoted in a front-page Post article as suggesting that Jews are headed for eternal damnation.

Tony Tavares, the team's president, issued a statement saying the quotations in the article "do not, in any manner, reflect the views or opinions of the Washington Nationals franchise."

Tavares acted following complaints from Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld, leader of an Orthodox Jewish congregation in Washington, who said it appeared that "the locker room of the Nationals is being used to preach hatred" and urged the club to distance itself from Church's remarks.

Tavares said he was conducting an investigation that might lead to the permanent removal of chaplain Jon Moeller, an FBI agent who volunteers for Baseball Chapel, the Pennsylvania-based evangelical Christian group that provides unpaid ministers for many major and minor league teams. "I don't dispute his right to teach his Christian beliefs. It's just the way this was done, turning this into some public pulpit . . . that's what troubles me," Tavares said.

An article in Sunday's paper about Baseball Chapel quoted Church as saying that he had turned to Moeller for advice about his former girlfriend, who was Jewish. "I said, like, Jewish people, they don't believe in Jesus. Does that mean they're doomed? Jon nodded, like, that's what it meant. My ex-girlfriend! I was like, man, if they only knew. Other religions don't know any better. It's up to us to spread the word," Church said.

In a written statement yesterday distributed by the team, Church said: "Those who know me on a personal level understand that I am not the type of person who would call into question the religious beliefs of others. I sincerely regret if the quote attributed to me in Sunday's Washington Post article offended anyone."

A spokeswoman for the team, Chartese Burnett, said Church would not have any additional comment.

Moeller did not respond to e-mails and telephone calls, and neither did officials of Baseball Chapel. But some evangelical Christian leaders defended Moeller, saying he had simply reiterated the traditional Christian doctrine that Jesus is the only way to salvation.

"Just how many ways can you interpret the words of Jesus in John 14:5-6, 'I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me,' " said the Rev. Richard Land, head of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. "The worst this chaplain could be convicted of is ascribing to orthodox Christian historic faith, which is what I would think you would want from a Christian chaplain."

The Rev. Christopher M. Leighton, a Presbyterian minister who is executive director of the Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies in Baltimore, said that while the "dominant tradition" in Christianity has emphasized the exclusivity of salvation, Roman Catholics and many Protestant denominations have moved toward the view that God has a "continuing covenant" with the Jews.

"It's a real shame that this challenge had to be mounted by a rabbi. This is the work that really belonged to other Christians, to say this is an unacceptable understanding of our faith," he said.

Tavares said that the choice of chaplain was made by the players, and that the Nationals would be glad to make similar provisions for Catholics, Jews, Muslims and others who work for the club.

"But one of the cautions I intend to give anyone who comes in here is, these are private services and should be kept private," he said. "I'm not trying to change anyone's religion or beliefs. I just cannot provide a public pulpit."

See....Replacement theology is a bbbbaaaaaddd thing!

Based on what one small church in Pa said? Don't quit your day job just yet.

Your antiChristian remarks are evidence as well, dear reznwerks. Hopefully you will wake up and believe before Jesus returns.

PS I am already financially able to quit my day job, thanks to God's blessings upon my life. Now I can extend to him my full services every day of the week. Thanks for caring.

You mean the end of all things is at hand? The coming of the Lord is near? He is coming quickly? These events are to shortly come to pass?

Shortly you will see the return of the Lord of Lords, King of Kings after which the resurrection of all those that are dead in Christ Jesus will be resurrected to an immortal, incorruptible body while those that are still alive in Christ Jesus will be changed in a twinkling. All those that are unbelievers will be under the wrath of God at that time. Jesus will reign on earth for one thousand years, after which the new heavens and new earth will be created, and the city, New Jerusalem will descend from heaven where God will dwell eternally with those that have been purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ. There will be no more false prophets, false teachers, false doctrines, liars, devils, evil, sin, tears, pain, sorrow, death.

Believers will forever be with their Lord and God, Jesus.

I suppose you do not believe that.

I suppose you do not believe that.

I just wonder why words like “shortly†“near†“soon†and “at hand†mean that today, but didn’t mean it 2000 years ago.

Jam 5:8 You also be patient, establish your hearts, for the coming of your Lord draws near.

1Pe 4:7 But the end of all things has drawn near. Therefore be of sound mind, and be sensible to prayers.

Rev 1:1 A Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him to declare to His servants things which must shortly come to pass. And He signified it by sending His angel to His servant John,

Rev 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads and hears the Words of this prophecy, and the ones keeping the things written in it, for the time is near.

The average lifespan of a man is 70 years, and the span between when Jesus ascended to his return is short next to the contrast to eternity.

Also, exact timing is not near as important as reference of comfort to those who wait. When a child asks during a car trip how much longer they have before arriving, their understanding of "we are almost there" is different than the actual time of arrival.

Christ told when the end would come 'thereabouts', in Matthew 24:14.
And just before that time we can see in daily print the ABOMINATION OF THE EARTH of Revelation 17:5 in PRINTED & TELECAST plain view!

And Genesis 6:3 tell's of the Striving of the Holy Spirit for the last time! You know, Grieved & Quenched for the last time. Unreachable! :crying: Anyway, what good are these ones now??? Not only the Sodom & Gomorrah ones, but the ones of Luke 12:47-48 ones also! And these ones Christ had told us about, He was raised from the dead, and look what He documents as truth.. ".. If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead."

And the judgements that a loving God permits are for any that still may be out there that could not be reached 'or awakened' any other way than this. See Jude 1:22-23. Compare Zephaniah 1:12 & Zephaniah 1:14-18.
God has given all ample warning!

It hardly matters. The point is that each day that goes by brings the time of Jesus' coming one day closer. And one day it WILL happen!

I bet they arrive at the destination before everyone has died of old age.

When you come to know God the Father through Jesus Christ, you can pray for wisdom and understanding about the end times and Jesus' return. He will give you that truth if you are walking in the Spirit and not in the flesh. Hopefully you won't die of old age or young age before that time.

He will give you that truth if you are walking in the Spirit and not in the flesh.

Yes, His truth can be found in the Bible, not Jack VanImpe Presents or TBN.

Read wht the NT writers say about the "last days". Start with Hebrews 1:1-2. Then try I Peter 4:7.

I don't watch television preachers, nor do I believe doctrines that disagree with the entire scripture. Some do not rightly divide the truth, therefore I let the Holy Spirit teach me all things. He has taught me through the Word of God that Jesus will return to set up his reign on earth at the end of the age, just as he said.

He has taught me through the Word of God that Jesus will return to set up his reign on earth at the end of the age, just as he said.

Would that be the end of the age that the writer of Hebrews spoke of?

Hebrews 9: 26 else must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once at the end of the ages hath he been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Or perhaps the one Paul spoke of?

I Cor. 10: 11 Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

Just as it was in the day of Noah, so shall it be when Jesus returns. When Jesus gathers his elect in the safe place he will then unleash the wrath of God on the unbelieving that are alive on the earth. After this all believers will be with Jesus for eternity and will reign on earth for one thousand years. After the one thousand years all of the dead will be resurrected to judgement and those that are to be separated from God will be cast into the lake of fire with satan, death, and all evil.

Moses laws were of the OT ceremonial 'Lamb' offering age, pointing the way that was now made into the Most Holy place in heaven itself when Christ was Sacrificed. New Age! See Galateans 3:19. Remember that the earthly Sanctuary Holy Place wall or 'Vail' was rent in twain from top to bottom by an unseen hand & made the way into the Most Holy Place? Well. regardless if one understands or not that is the way that it is! :fadein:

Now friend: You did not ask, but this had nothing to do with with the Everlasting Covenant of Hebrews 13:20 (Eternal Requirement) other than its location! See 2 Corinthians 3:3. This Eternal Covenant of the Godhead is now placed into the Born Again mind! Hebrews 10:16, including the 7th Day Sabbath! James 2:8-12.

The New age only did away with the Deuteronomy 31:9 law that Moses wrote in a book. See Deuteronomy 31:24-26. These all were for the old age.

Now: can you understand what this 'old' age meant??? If not, think of it like this, from Adams sin on, they were required to offer a sacrificial lamb in faith (Hebrews 11:13) believing that Christ would come and fullfill the requirement, when He did, that slaying of lambs were now of no avail! The old age requirement met its fullfillment!

Nice dodge. This has nothing to do with what I asked.

John the Baptist, I have no idea what point you are trying to make.

John here: That is the problem with your bible studying! :sad
See Matthew 4:4 for starters, and then 2 Timothy 3:16 for a little more.

Then perhaps you will see a 'little' understanding in 1 John 4:6???
No sarcasm intended, just fact as I see it! And by the way, you do know that you only need to click on the bible verses that are posted here & they will come up on your screen?

I thought you might like to know the truth for once, but I guess I was mistaken. Sorry to interfer with your worldly understanding.
