Have I been reading 2 Timothy 3:1-9 wrong?

I used to read verse 6 and 7 where it says "ever learning, and never seeing the truth." Things like atheism would pop in mind. People are constantly learnig useless knowledge, and never seeing Christ. But fter reading again I get a different vibe from it.

6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their's also was.
After another reading I get, in short, "in the last days terrible times will come. People will love themselves and hold coldness towards god and others lawlessly. Such as these are the kinds which creep into homes, and lead women astray. These women are easily swayed by new doctrines and teachings. These teachers are false Christians, but will be exposed eventually".

Now am I reading right? Are the "men" or "people" in the second verse all mankind or only people in the church? Is it the "silly women" who are ever learning, or the people "of this sort"?

Church people.

Generally speaking perilous times in the world, but then he refines what he is saying to those of the "faith"

1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:
2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good,
4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts,
7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith;
2 Timothy 3:1-8

Everything in between these phrases refers to those of the household of the faith.

...having a form of godliness... disapproved concerning the faith;

always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth... is a direct reference to those who can talk the talk about the scriptures but never experience the truth that the scriptures reveal.

Simply put they are not doers of the word.

There are many in the "ministry" who fit this catagory.

I'm gonna give an example: Oprah and New Earth by Eckart Tolle

Lots of women following her and having a nod to Christianity, but no knowledge of Christ and "what" he did on the cross.

Goes along with 2 Tim 3:6

That is one very good example!

Good example. There are many diverse teaching in the New Age teachings, angels cards is one and they are basically tarot cards.
There are also older teachings that include mediums, automatic writing, that include teaching that one is saved by doing good deeds (imitating Christ) but never knowing Him as Savior and Lord of their life or as the literal Son of God. They save themselves and Jesus is their brother or friend only.

I never thought of that before. And, now that I do (thanks, LoveThroughDove)...it dawns on me...

This has been going on for a long time, but I do think its intensified. Media influences, social and economic changes. For instance, my great-grandmother was into occult stuff that was en vogue back then, like seances and mediums. Now, we have gender-specific ministries that seem to sell alot of psychobabble mixed with Bible verses. Nothing wrong with focusing on the needs of men and women, because we are different, but...I have concerns, just based on what I've seen and read.

Oprah is an awesome example. I saw a video once..."Church of Oprah" or something...she's made a lot of money New Age-ing the culture. I personally think the merger of Christianity w/ some strains of psychology, even psychiatry, has undermined the faith good bit, too. Speaking as a "mental patient..." there's a lot in "mental health" that is anti-Christ to the max.

Can't Christ overcome aberrant new-age influences among His sheep?

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Remember scripture was not written in chapter and verse...

7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

I've encountered people who have studied the bible for decades, but when it comes to listing 10 or 15 commands of Jesus by memory, they can't do it.

For men shall be lovers of their own selves,

covetous,

boasters,

proud,

blasphemers,

disobedient to parents,

unthankful,

unholy,

Without natural affection,

truce-breakers,

false accusers,

incontinent,

fierce,

despisers of those that are good,

:agreed Ummm, everyone every day everywhere these days... yeah...

Traitors,

heady,

highminded,

lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

"Oh God gimme all I want..." prayers, or "why can't I be rich?" prayers, or "more more more" sounds like most in Church these days.

Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof:

from such turn away.

Or stop being one of them.

For those who believe the church is getting weaker what does that say about Christ the head of the body?

The Church is a very broad stroke.

Just because the Curch in America may be in desperate need of revival cleansing, doesn't mean the Church in Africa or India is in the same condition.
