I just read this in the book of Job in my Message Bible and I don't really understand its meaning. :confused

It’s Eugene Peterson’s dysphemisms for Eliphaz’s euphemisms;

“conceive trouble” (i.e. ‘have sex with sin’ is like conceiving trouble at least to Mr. Peterson). Or at least he evidently felt it makes for more flamboyant reading). And “bring forth mischief” (i.e. give birth to evil).

They conceive trouble and bring forth mischief, and their womb prepares deceit.”
Job 15:35 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Job 15:35&version=LEB

Check out v27 :)

Really it’s just a whole chapter of Eliphaz telling Job the reason he lost his children was due to their godless behavior. Kind-hearted huh??? Not to mention hypocritical, I’m sure. But we know better.

Now I would try reading it in a different version and see if anything is illuminated for you. The Message bible waters things down too much, so a lot of the true meaning can be lost.

Pretty much!
Yup, a natural disaster struck and your kids died. God did that because they were sinners.

That same theology is still around today. Remember Katrina?

Man will say because of this and that is why bad things are happening like StoveBolts said about what many said about Katrina as being a punishment from God. What it all boils down to in the book of Job is that Satan is given permission by God to come against Job in any way he wanted to except to kill Job as this would prove to Satan that Job was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil no matter what came against him.

No translation is perfect. On your second (or 200th) read through you could compare tricky passages to other versions.

Of course if you were reading the NT you would have encountered the very same concept you're asking about, so I find it specious to claim MSG watered anything down here.
